I would guess Saudia for the 12 (possibly Turkish, if not SV?) ... Emirates for another 20, to launch Neo?

For the 12 i also think Saudia , but NOT Emirates for the 20 , a too small order for this airline.

Since AF needs more controversy, put me down for AF on the 20 380s and UA down for the 12 because that's a type they don't fly yet...

Does this mean out of the six A380 sales campaigns they had going last year, they now only have two?

....and I am being a little disingenuous!

I can see the A380 fitting in TK's fleet!

Totally!

Its been a far too common occurance with the A380 and rumoured orders that end up going nowhere fast.

I also love the A380, but the reality is that it just isn't the right fit for many airlines.

Cathay makes sense, given its operational growth limits at HKG, but it appears to have ruled out an order.

Saudia and Turkish

Saudia is a possibility but Turkish is less certain. It has made a few contraditory statements over time about the A380, but I wouldn't rule it out.

What the hell are Royal Air Maroc going to do with upto a dozen A380s (I'm assuming SV would be the larger order here)? Ok there will be high seasonal demand but what about the rest of the year? It's a bit of a capacity jump, shall we say.

Saudi maybe, RAM not so much -- it has had a single 747 in it's fleet over the last 40 years (747-100 then 200 then 300 then 400 with an SP thrown in) -- maybe a candidate for one Skymark A380 but not a dozen.

Well that's why it's talks and not signed contracts. But, *IF* the article is correct it sort of speaks to how much faith we should have in these orders coming to fruition. Sound pretty desperate/wishful thinking here. Happy to be proven wrong but as you said earlier, believe it when I see it. Heard this for years now (orders are just around the corner).

Remember the rumours that the orders would be announced right about now, aka at the airshow?

At least if I was their CEO...

10 A380s for their biggest routes, the A330s and A350s to open up new routes in Asia. Upgrade current often E190 intra-European routes to A321s, save on per-passenger costs.

Lets hope not Saudi for Mecca flights. The A380 is big enough to host another stampede and major loss of life.

I am thinking they'll trick Delta into thinking the planes are used and sell them a few frames cheap.

SAS - they need a more diverse fleet after having retired the MD-80s on short-haul. They wanted to order the SSJ and the C-Series, but since they would not destroy fleet planning fast enough, the A380s are a good intermediate step.

For the 20, although I can already picture them in TK livery, I'd rather go for EK until the new IST airport is completed. I don't see CX until they've changed it a bit or launched the NEO

Absolutely, that was the last order proudly inked by Airbus... with full fanfare. Its an order on the books... and every A380 fanboy knows for sure that every one of these will be produced and sold...

No one can say who they will be sold to yet; but, that is not really a concern is it. They will be delivered... really... just believe...

I agree. Leahy's been very wide of the mark for the last 4 years, and every year makes essentially the same statement - and nothing really happens (except an Amedeo order - which apparently is only a marketing arrangement that Airbus will produce one (or up to 20) should Amedeo place A380's with clients.

The only reason that TK holding still for A380 is the lack of space and inforstructure of Istanbul's Airport. The previous CEO told that they were about the sign the contract but Istanbul airport was simply not ready to accomodate A380.Since the beginning of the year, local authority is building an extension to the current terminal capable to serve A380 and the taxiways reaching that area is being strengtened, and the runway 35R has alraedy been rebuilt with increased strenght for high weight airplanes. But the most important is to prepare the maintenance hangars to fit A380 while still continue to serve the rest of the fleet.

It sounds logical that TK to sign an 380 contract and the first aircraft to be delivered should be earliest end of next year and all preparations will be ready.I cross my fingers for an A380 since my seniority would allow me to fly one of them in the next 5 years

Add to the link in the thread opened this Flightglobal one, with some additional bits of info:
https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/dubai-case-for-a380-is-inevitable-leahy-418884/

Quote:
He is confident that the type is becoming “known in the marketplace” and that a new customer could emerge by the end of the year – although he points out that the year-end is essentially an arbitrary point and that a sale that slips into 2016 is nevertheless business for the airframer.
[...]
“I wish we had more sales sooner,” Leahy admits. “It takes more time to sell an A380 than an A320.”

On the A380NEO:

Quote:
“Fuel prices are down now, people aren’t urging manufacturers to get [re-engined aircraft] out immediately,” says Leahy.

Quoting phxa340 (Reply 15):
Were you being sarcastic ? I ask genuinely because Leahy's promises regarding new A380 customers always come out to be false and never materialize for the past 4+ years.

I agree. Leahy's been very wide of the mark for the last 4 years, and every year makes essentially the same statement

Have to disagree here.
Yes, he's been saying for the last few years he's hopeful/confident of signing more deals on the A380 before year-end. He's unlikely to say otherwise, just like Boeing will always say they are confident of/see potential for more 747-8i orders.
What's different here is that he is pretty specific:
* Two airlines
* One for ~20, one for 10-12
* Signed before year-end, but may also slip into 2016

He usually isn't that specific unless he's pretty sure of actually getting a deal done. It's one thing to weasel your way out of a "I'm confident of more sales" statement by saying something about market dynamics. It's another to weasel your way out of the statements he gave away here. At least one of those deals has to come to fruition or otherwise he knows he'll have to answer tons of questions from journalists and his bosses some time next year-

Quoting Osiris30 (Reply 23):

I've only heard that rumour about SV, but that was part of the overall rumour that they're in talks.

Quoting mrcomet (Reply 29):
Lets hope not Saudi for Mecca flights. The A380 is big enough to host another stampede and major loss of life.

You do realise that an A380 is absolutely infinitesimally tiny against the numbers of pilgrims that arrive in Mecca for the hajj? Almost 1.4m arrived on a single weekend in September alone... You'd need over 1600 all-economy A380 flights to pack that amount of people. Or the other way round: A single max-seat A380 seats 0.06% of the number of people that arrived in Mecca over that single weekend...

Now - as for the airlines Leahy is in talks with, I concur SV are good candidates. I meant to say "probably for the 10-12, not the 20", but then I realised they have 30 744... It'd be a bit boring, but China may well be in there as well. Less boring would be TK (who've been a bit contradictory about the whole VLA niche), and even less boring would be CX, but they don't seem very likely. Top-on order from SQ or BA for 10-12, maybe?
Royal Air Maroc I don't see as part of this for reasons already outlined by others above.

Will be interesting to see what - if anything - comes of this.

I can't imagine a Japanese carrier would want them; nor the likes of Cathay Pacific. Chinese carriers, however? China Southern for a few more? Or China Eastern? What about Air India on some of their heavier routes like London?

That said, the most likely candidates were always Saudia (who had been looking), more for Emirates or Etihad or Qatar.

Would be nice to see a new-to-A380 carrier emerge. South African? Turkish? TAM?

I would love to see that, especially since in a few years the B744 will have left the KLM-fleet. But I don't think KLM is a serious contender for the possible A380-orders Airbus is hinting at. And since we have statements like these before I am only convinced after the orders are confirmed.

Quoting titus95 (Thread starter):

Airbus said at the Dubai air show , they are in talks to sell 30-32 A380s with 2 Airlines , not lessors.
One for 20 and the other for 10-12
Quoting TheSonntag (Reply 33):
But to get back on topic - he says explicitly that he is in talks, buth when it shall be signed is uncertain.

Correct?

Boeing is also ALWAYS in talks with various airlines about the 747-8i and will never sell another unit of that airplane. It is sad, but the truth. Not counting top-up orders (for reasons of availability) of existing customers.

Quoting Armodeen (Reply 3):
In talks in talks in talks...we've heard it all before. Will believe it when it materialises.

And I am a massive A380 fan, imagine what the haters will say :P

If these orders are not top-ups I don't see a new customer for the A380.

It's good to have dreams, just so long as they're not fantasies.

I would love to see that, especially since in a few years the B744 will have left the KLM-fleet. But I don't think KLM is a serious contender for the possible A380-orders Airbus is hinting at. And since we have statements like these before I am only convinced after the orders are confirmed.

Whereas I do have strong doubts of KL ever operating the A380, I wouldn't rule it out completely.
Some years ago the A-net community said the same of the 77W having too much seats for KL to fill, and look what happened.
KL is extremely fond of the aircraft and has since added even more frames to the fleet that one would have expected.
Perhaps in a few years time, KL would be ready to fill a A380 to certain destinations.
In the current Mojo where AF/KL are, I would say no. That's for sure.

Perhaps it's IAG finally realizing their existing orders for BA aren't enough.
