AWESOME!!! It was a beautiful takeoff! She looks amazing. Congrats to Mitsubishi and Japan! I am so excited to fly on this beautiful bird. She looks like a hornet, but so elegant. The regional market is going to be so neat. Can't wait till the C-Series is out too. This is a aviation geeks dream come true.

I have to salute the men and women who bravely climb into these planes, and take them on their first flights. Test pilots are a rare breed, and so so brave. Today is a great day! LOL! Is my geek coming out or what?

Nice landing; despite a small bounce on touchdown.

I found it weird that they didn't use RT for the landing; does anyone know why the pilot didn't use it?

Next to the L1 door there seems to be a thingy reflecting the light. It looks like a angle of attack measurement vane. I wonder if this is a vane for flight testing or if this is the definitive vane. I am not sure having this vane immediately next to the main door is smart as passengers could (accidentally) grab it or staircases/gates bump into it.

Congratulations to Mitsubishi. This is exciting. The cargo hold/turn time is innovative.

Engine #3 for Pratt's small GTF high spool.

Really nice looking plane. Cool to hear the excitement from the reporters as it took off.

Interesting positioning of this plane.

MRJ90 really looks to compete almost directly with the Embraer 175-E2
(albeit with much less range.. unless you go for the LR with can compete with the 175-E2 @ std range)

MRJ70 occupies a space currently filled by the Embraer 170
(again albeit with much less range... unless you go for the LR offers the same 1800nmi as the 170 @ std range)

Will be interesting what decision they take on a future MRJ110 stretch (just at 100pax).

Mitsubishi was quoted as saying with scope clauses they thought US carriers would be more interested in the MRJ70.
Meanwhile Asia and Europe would take the MRJ90.
However, in fact the US is responsible for the majority of the orders (170 firm orders w/ 170 options) and they are all MRJ90.
(though not sure about the Eastern Airline orders as they just started charter service months ago)
No one has placed a firm order for the MRJ70 shrink.
Not to hard to imagine that airlines will press for the stretch.

Can't wait for the test flight program to start providing feedback on the performance, reliability, etc.. of this fine looking aircraft.

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 34):
What does the innovative cargo hold/turn time refer to?

Mitsubishi worked on ensuring the baggage could be turned far quicker than in the Bombardier and Embraer products. That is why the cargo hold is at the back of the aircraft instead of below the passengers. For this size of aircraft, the cargo hold isn't tall enough for baggage handlers to turn the aircraft as quickly as larger aircraft; think about them having to worry about bumping their heads while moving baggage. An intentional weight penalty was taken for the sake of faster aircraft turn times when the aft cargo hold was selected. Mitsubishi also put in other features to speed turn time (some was just ensuring the engines could thrust up quickly).

Partially this is due as Mitsubishi picked Hawaiian airlines as a potential customer. (or a competitor in the islands).

Quoting ODwyerPW (Reply 35):
Not to hard to imagine that airlines will press for the stretch.

The US airlines will press for a lower weight version. I'm not sure if the current shrink is quite right for them. If Mitsubishi is able to get weight out of the MR9, the US airlines would happily take it.

Almost all of the union contracts with the major U.S. carriers—with Alaska Airlines being one notable exception—forbid them from outsourcing flying to any aircraft certificated in the U.S. with an MTOW exceeding 86,000 lb. But the specifications Embraer just unveiled for its E175-E2 show an MTOW of 97,731 lb. Mitsubishi Aircraft's specifications for the MRJ90 indicate an MTOW of 87,303 lb. for the standard model, 90,378 lb. for the extended range and 94,358 lb. for the long range, and its MR70LR is about 2,600 lb. over the contractual maximum.

http://aviationweek.com/awin/scope-clauses-may-affect-use-new-rjs

So a small weight reduction of the basic MR9 frame would help sell them to US airlines by getting under the 86,000 lb maximum weight due to scope clauses.

Agreed.
The following video illustrates the task involved baggage handling under the floor of an regional jet:

Thanks for sharing this, it's quite an eye-opener! It all seems so primitive and not really thought through, and relies on grunt effort from a couple of guys. Not very 21st century looking! With a little more creativity and borrowing from the solutions found on main deck freighters amongst others, surely something more efficient could be deployed quite cheaply!

Too small for any container approach. Some of these cases are BIG! Even just some rows of rollers would help!

Or like Mitsubishi, move the cargo to the tail. Rollers take height and weight. The first MRJ concept had underfloor cago. One (Hamilton, IIRC) engineer discussed why business jets put cargo aft so Mitsubishi looked into it. Once the turn time study was completed, the decision was made.

It is very unusual for an aircraft with underwing engines to have an tail cargo hold.

According to Leeham News, the current MTOW is 94,350 lb, I don't see how they can remove 8,000 lb without affect range significantly. Same problem for the E175E2, who have a 98,450 lb MTOW.

My understanding is that right from the beginning there was a large aft cargo compartment. What go eliminated at a later stage was a small underfloor compartment - by resizing the existing aft compartment.

But you picked the MRJ90LR. Perhaps the lightening effort will be geared towards the MRJ90STD which is only 1300lbs over the scope clauses.
Granted such a target leaves this regional jet with a reduced range compared to the 175-E2...

However, if the range is not needed and it's 12000 lbs lighter than the closest Embraer offering, than it should meet the requirements for quite a few operators.
