Parked Aircraft Hit By Staircase During High Winds

You can see ground worker trying to prevent the collision.

I imagine this flight was canceled.

But how's the rest of your house?

Seriously, this has happened several times in these kind of weather events. I remember one time where the plane, I think an Airbus widebody which wasn't properly chocked, was blown into the jetway.

I think it was the staircase that hit the plane, not the other way around

I actually misread the title as "Parked Aircraft Hit My Suitcase During High Winds" and thought that the wind was so strong it actually blew an airplane into a baggage cart, damaging the poster's luggage.

This happened Wednesday as that weather went through DSM. The stairs were owned by SWA, the plane is Endeavor's.

Ferry flight to CVG for repairs.

The stairs hit the nav light and did done internal damage.

My advice would be not to leave your staircase lying around next to parked aircraft during storms! There's a reason most people keep their staircases inside their house.

Not always that easy, Doc. I've seen wind break tie-downs. I've seen aircraft blown off their chocks. I saw the wind break tie-down cables and pick up an LD9 and chuck it across the ramp.

I had a dust devil pick up a 152 on a calm day and drop it upside down on a fuel truck once.
That stairway was probably poorly maintained like 80% of them are and the wheels didn't brake when it wasn't in use.

This one has to be the all time funniest airport storm video of all time. Tornado at KSTL.

I've never seen TSA run so fast! And that big woman still toting her luggage...waking sooooo slowly...you could see she was trying...

A few years ago at Wellington, New Zealand, a 737 was blown around a bit while it was parked. Video is here:

It doesn't take much wind to blow stairs if the stabilisers are not used, as soon as they start moving, momentum keeps them going.

I once had to retrieve a set of quite heavy stairs (but on wheels) from a taxiway at Perth airport, with them still rolling towards the runway. Managed to stop them before getting to runway, but had they started rolling probably 30 seconds earlier they would have hit a taxing Embraer 120 Brasilia, and if they had started rolling 1 minute later, they probably would have hit a taxing Jetstar aircraft (who had stopped short because he had seen the stairs rolling).

Now, that was under windy but not excessively windy conditions. The video in the OP is where wind would probably require tie downs as well as stabilisers down.

Do you think DL/9E will seek any money from WN for repairs? Or just eat the cost of repairs?

Not the first time, won't be the last.

I have had to tip over stairs on occasion so they don't blow around.......Actually one night I did that woke up to gusts +100 mph and saw the Alaska State Toopers King Air floating a foot off the ground by it's tie down straps.

The state came by later and parked their loader and grader in front of it to block the wind.

The hell with the plane, if anyone had got in the way of that staircase they would have been seriously hurt.

If any airport have big storm or high wind warning. All crews should flip down stairs before head storm. Stairs won't be able to move at all. It does make a sense!

It looks like someone forgot to lock the wheels on that staircase...

From the article:

Quote:
The video starts with the tornado catching the air-stairs

Someone needs to tell the Daily Mail that strong winds are not the same thing as a tornado. I'm sure if there was an actual tornado the airport staff would have told everyone to seek shelter and not allowed them to stand in front of that window.

True, specially stairs like that one, that are not very heavy and easy to move with the wind.

Luckily nobody got hurt, I don't think the guy running toward the stair could have done anything to stop it.

I think they will do, at the end it is the owner responsibility of the stairs because they did not secure them properly.

Reminds me of this happened a couple of years ago here in Brisbane, the can which are designed for BAe 146/737F and around 2000kg empty was blown over 60m during a thunderstorm into the side of this BAe 146 freighter.

Surprised it hasn't been asked yet....will this plane be scrapped? The crew will surely be fired, no?

There was a report of a tornado touching down at the airport.

Certainly nowhere near scrapping-level damage, and nobody will likely be fired because nobody will have any idea whose specific job it was last to set the stabs on the stairs and/or set chocks. Of course, it depends on how vindictive local management wants to be. It's not hard to point a finger at someone who was in the vicinity and make them a scapegoat.

Those containers weigh more like 200kg empty, but still clearly enough to cause major damage.

Typo! Thanks for pointing it out. From memory it was on a slave pallet for transport in a storage area and got picked up off that.
