Most Common Aircraft Flying The Atlantic?

Sun Nov 15, 2015 4:10 am

Just a quick question, was curious to know if anyone knows or has an up to date source, of what is the most common aircraft flying across the Atlantic these days?

I know the 767 has been the most common aircraft for many years plying the routes between North America and Europe, with Boeing proudly boasting about this fact. However with the 767 in decline, and aircraft like the A330 and 777 becoming more common, and you also have the new kids on the block like the A350 and 787.

I could be completely wrong and the 767 is still the most common type, with the likes of UA, AA, DL and AC still widely flying the type.

Just for fun, I saw this post and decided to do a quick arbitrary poll on FlightRadar24, luckily the eastbound TATL push is in full swing at the moment. So, here's what I came up with in a random sample of 50 aircraft:

B787: 4
A330: 15
A340: 1
B767: 16
B777: 12
B747: 2

So in this totally random and arbitrary sample, the 767 still wins! In all seriousness, my bet would be it's still a close race between the A330 and the 767 nowadays, with the 777 not all that far behind.

Many airlines fly the A330 across the atlantic, TAP, IB, UX, AF, KLM, Brussels, Virgin, EI, LH, SAS, TK, Alitalia, DL, AA, AC, Avianca, AR, LATAM, few charter airlines also going to the caribbean.

The second one in my opinion is the B777, with BA, AF, KLM, AC, AA, AM, DL, United, AZ, Aeroflot, LATAM,

The B767 is clearly reducing because very few airlines fly them nowadays, same for the B747.

I think that the 767 has quite significantly more airlines flying it than the 747.

few of them with the USA airlines, 6-8 a day maybe.

What about the Iceland airlnes?? how do they consider them?? they do fly B757-B767 and A320, but since they are in the middle of the way, can we consider westbound and eastbound or only KEF to USA.

SAA also cross the Atlantic with A330 and A340, to South America and North America, Air Algerie A330, RAM B767 and B787, What about the ME3 flying to some USA destinations??

Air Tahiti nUi uses the A340-300 to Paris I Beleave ... SAS also use the Airbus A340-300 on certain flights to Scandinavia.

Lets say count only KEF to North America and North America to KEF, that would mean between 18 to 28 757 and 4 A321 per day according to season. The 767 starts to operate this routes next year.

LH that are currently on strike still uses a significant amount of 340s. Anyways, my money would most certainly still be on the 767 given the size of North American and British TATL operations when compared to the continental European carriers holding the 330's flag up.

G'day

LH, AF, BA, SQ and EK use the A380 on transatlantic runs

Wonder why your sample does not include the A380 - the ME3, SIA, BA, AF and LH all use it on transatlantic runs. Maybe to be statistically relevant, you need to sample N times per day and thus arrive at some average sample that might be more accurate

Anyway, I'm not interested in the "most common"!

I prefer the superior ones, that rules out ALL the USA airlines, and only has the A380 operators!!!!

Does Delta claim the most TATL flights, heavily using their huge 767 fleet?

15/20 years ago, I felt like a 767 was my other apartment! (on UA)

There are currently 19 757s flying to/from Europe not including Iceland air. Looks like the 757 is the most common ac over the atlantic.

Thanks for the sample. We need to add a few 757s and A380s to create a subset, but this tells us the mid size wudebodies dominate. Although there are quite the number of 777s.

There would never be more 757's in total than 777, 767 or A330.

Although as you say your stats were taken from a totally random sample, I would say that they are a reasonable reflection of the correct position.

The 747 still has a fair presence, with more european carriers providing them than Americas side carriers.

The A380, B787 and A340 have a small presence.

Does anybody know how many scheduled flights per day there are across the atlantic these days? I once read a figure of 1000/day, but that could have been 20 years or so ago - I suspect it must be close to double that now.

Well, one of these must be widely inaccurate!

2000 per day (is that in both directions?) versus a sampled selection of of 50. Ouch!

2000 per day was only a wild guess. I was asking a question more than making a statement, but I think that is total i.e. 1000 each way.

I believe that the 777/767 must be roughly joint top with A330 not far behind. The others 744, 757, A380 and B787 must trail a bit.

A reason why the A330 is common between eastern North America and Europe is that A330-300's have the range to fly non-stop on this route. Indeed, EI's A333's pioneered using the A330 model on transatlantic flights.

Of 180 aircraft I could just count, from the Caribbean north, here is another (unscientific) list:

A330-200 - 17
A330-300 - 32
A340-300 - 7
A340-600 - 8
A380-800 - 5

B747-400 - 17
B747-800 - 4
B757-200 - 5
B767-300 - 23
B767-400 - 6
B777-200 - 22
B777-300ER - 15
B788 - 11
B789 - 1

So the A330-300 wins by type, Boeing by number overall!

Without any information at all, I'd wager it's the A330 because of the sheer numbers of airlines that use it TATL. It almost certainly has the widest number of operators:

Quoting migair54 (Reply 2):
Many airlines fly the A330 across the Atlantic, TP, IB, UX, AF, KLM, SN, VS, EI, LH, SAS, TK, AZ, DL, AA, AC, AV, AR, LATAM, few charter airlines also going to the Caribbean.

But the number of flights is very hard to tell.

My second guess would be the 777 because again: wide variety of airlines:

Quoting migair54 (Reply 2):
BA, AF, KL, AC, AA, AM, DL, UA, AZ, SU, LATAM,

The 767 doesn't have as many TATL operators off the top of my head, UA, DL, AA, BA (not much longer), BY (?), AC, OS, WS, BW (until January). But the US3 still send PLENTY across.

Is this limited to pax aircraft? Fedex and UPS and smaller operators like Atlas, Polar, Cargolux, DHL, TNT etc etc all fly transatlantic too. Are those numbers taken in to account?

It's more than that, IB, TP, AF, LH, VS, SK, AY and LX still fly A340s across. I don't think FlyDTW1992's quick look is really representative, it's just a look at a moment in time, not a comprehensive study.

There's a lot more than that.. the sample was just a sample, and representing only a few percent of the actual flights per day. But there's a decline of A340s unfortunately. Beautiful aircraft.

Where do LX's 340 fly to here in US of A. I was flying to transatlantic to DEN and my routing is via ORD. So i get to fly the A330 but not the A340.

Well, it could be that LX have swapped some A340s for A330s, but within the last year you have:

I think LAX is still an A340, but I'm not sure. SFO and ORD both have had A330s recently as well.

On this list there is A330-300 and A330-200, but then again A330?

And SATA is still flying from PDL or LIS to Bos and YYZ, should there not be at least a few flights for the A310?

Just for fun, I saw this post and decided to do a quick arbitrary poll on FlightRadar24, luckily the eastbound TATL push is in full swing at the moment. So, here's what I came up with in a random sample of 50 aircraft:

That must be N.America only. Europe-S.America is also TATL and if you look at the big players there (IB, TP, AV), they all use A330's and A340's.

I believe it's a toss up between the 767 and A330.

A330 has the edge if you count both A332 and A333.

Where is the 747-8 in this list? LH is flying them on the North Atlantic.

Hi,

as per FlighGlobal data in November 2015 for all flights between everything Americas and Europe, Africa, Middle East, and India:

It says all America, B748 is not there, but there should be some with LH, Air Bridge Cargo and Cargolux. could A330 be A33F?? and B77F, nowadays plenty of B77F crossing the pond.

Since the first delivery of the A333 to the current one is a long way and plenty of improvements, orders keep coming and it's working perfect for some airlines.

Looking at the June 17 schedule, United alone has 19 daily 757 Atlantic crossings each way.

Reply 1 says no such thing and it couldn't possibly be all America with only 1 A340.

Without any information at all, I'd wager it's the A330

So would I. What once might look as shared by 330/777 is now more expected to be dominated by 330, as 777 presence shifted to 77W segment. Still, not surprisingly, 777 is not far behind on transatlantic.

Quoting FlyDTW1992 (Reply 1):
So in this totally random and arbitrary sample, the 767 still wins!

As random and arbitrary as it is, still says something! Is it right that once there were more 767s across the Atlantic than every other aircraft taken together?

On a related topic, does the Dash 8 that Air Iceland flies between Greenland and Iceland count as transatlantic?

Yes. Before the 777/A340/A330 arrived the vast majority of TATL routes by most U.S. carriers were 767's. That's probably still true today. Then you had AC, AM, VARIG, VASP, etc all operating 767's. On the European side BA, AF, AZ had 767's too. Probably there were more carriers with 767's.

No, crossing the Denmark Strait is no more transatlantic than crossing the English Channel.

Just as a little aside, this thread has made me realize that I've never flown transatlantic on the same type twice. On my trips to/from Europe I've flown 1x each on the 757, 767, 747, 777, A330, and A340. Don't draw any conclusions from that, though. There's definitely some some selection bias in there; especially with the most recent Airbus flights I was purposely trying to book flights on types I hadn't been on before.

I've only flown TATL on 747s... To think my next TATL will continue the trend. The first half dozen times was just finding the lowest fare. Now it is to keep up the trend.

Sorry, my list are only the top 20 (should have pointed that out), I didn't want to spam lists of 60+ aircraft. The 748 is at #26 with 238 monthly frequencies as you can see in the total list for 11/2015 below. Also solves the freighter questions.

I know, it is a shame - don't know how they gather their data but perhaps some airlines only post 330 while others are more detailed. By the by, they also refer to the 748 as Boeing 747-800 (even though FlightGlobal is generally regarded as a professional source)
