FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

What a monster AA change. Some interesting tidbits in the details. I thought dropping CLT-EYW was really surprising. I find it hard to believe that route is not profitable. Adding PHX routes makes you feel better about PHX.

These cutbacks aren't surprising - they're just normal seasonal reductions at PSP, which has one of the biggest dropoffs between winter and summer travel of any "sun" market in the USA.

I wonder why they oversell the off-season schedule if they know it is waaaay too rich in frequency?

I think this is the usual seasonal cut of CLT-EYW, I dont think US ever operated CLT-EYW during the summer as EYW was always a seasonal station.

Perhaps, but even so I'm shocked that route needs to be seasonal. It's a big enough market to support year round service to a logical hub like CLT. Frankly, I think it should be 2 or 3 RTs most of the year. I suspect MIA is a factor in this.

I'm in agreement with enilria, EYW is a big enough market to have service year round to MIA, CLT, DCA, DFW, and NYC... MIA doesn't need 6 daily.. What I would is MIA (4x), CLT (2x), DCA (1x), DFW (2x), JFK (2x).. I think that should capture the local, connecting, and international market very well..

Maybe the warm temps of the summer take to much of a performance hit to make it viable? Not sure, was just a thought.

The HP/US LAS hub experienced a similar growth spurt after the HP/US merger (new nonstops, LAS-Hawaii for example, and the daytime bank was extended, such as LASTPA going 2x, with a new daytime flight), only to get cut in '08. When fuel goes back up, and it will, PHX will be the first to go.

True, but CLT is a much more logical hub for EYW. DCA is more of a local market play. Looking at it another way...how can there be enough traffic to make DCA-EYW work mostly depending upon locals, but yet not enough for CLT to work with the massive hub? I think they are just protecting the EYW-MIA service.

The AA change looks pretty healthy. As far as the PHX adds go, there is a net increase of 1.7 CR9 frames planned for the month of March onward so my guess is SLC also picked up more CR9 frequencies than the current Saturday-only schedule.

As far as CKB goes, it very wheel could have been a planned YV flight for MX that somehow snuck in there.

I just can't see it being a suspension, that isn't much AS's style. More than likely an error.

These frequency change reports are just so misleading these days, given all the upguaging going on. Completely appreciate the effort and work that goes into it, but I wonder if there isn't a better way to show actual capacity changes.

I would point out that the recent BOS pull downs have been on US metal. While the adds at JFK have been on AA metal. I really don't think they are related. US did better on the BOS routes because the costs where lower. Now that costs are up I doubt some of the BOS stuff made money, enough to be trimmed.

JFK sounds like utilizing slots they already own but normally do not use. I bet more of this happens in airports were the DOJ is watching. The government doesn't not want dormant slots.

A little more than seasonal cut. Time for B6 to try BOS-ROC?

What for? To bleed money on a 100 seater? Or gouge ROC people with high fares to make it profitable and fly around with loads of 20%? They have better uses for the plane.

Quoting HPRamper (Reply 17):
I don't think we can chalk this up to "seasonal adjustments" as it covers half a year. I think AA is using a gradual pulldown of the BOS quasi-focus to fund metal for other routes.

Of course they are. BOS-Hubs will be what is left very shortly. We did the AA focus city in BOS already...and know how that story ends.

Quoting enilria (Reply 20):

It's even stranger because it comes back in June. Error or seasonal suspension?

I'm voting for error.

Looks like

AS 715a
AA 600p
AA 825p

So the extra flight doesnt seem to overlap in times with the AS flight

I just can't see it being a suspension, that isn't much AS's style. More than likely an error.

I think error

Wow, 3x daily SEA-MCO? Have to think this is a mistake.

IDK

Quoting jetlanta (Reply 26):
These frequency change reports are just so misleading these days, given all the upguaging going on. Completely appreciate the effort and work that goes into it, but I wonder if there isn't a better way to show actual capacity changes.

Well, I look forward to your ideas for a better version, since I've seen the reports from several airlines and they look almost identical to this.

Just had a conversation with a DL gate agent in BOS on Wednesday about these flights and she confirmed they're always full, so adding a 3rd daily doesn't surprise me.

With B6 starting Mint service on BOS-SFO next year I have to believe LAX will soon follow. That's going to be a game changer for DL, AA and UA. Wonder who will be the first to throw a premium configured plane on the route to compete. My guess is DL with their 75S, as I don't see AA with their A321's and F class being viable. However, they could put an international configured 757 on the route and rotate in with the BOS-CDG 757's they use.

I know that the City of Roswell did apply for some SCASDP grants last year. I wonder if the new PHX-ROW flights are a result of the grants being awarded.

It does seem that way, but the build up of JFK is also interested vis a vis PHL.

Eh, PHL is essentially net even with all of these changes. And most of JFK adds are major O&D routes that you'd expect to see adds in (SAN, SEA, SFO, LAS)

This one is interesting, wasn't this just listed last week. Looks like it starts 6/2.

Large increase - perhaps a response to B6.

Possibly, though B6, can't mind this change

So far no gauge change here. With the drawdown of AUS and SAT and a paltry 3 to IAH, AA really must want PHL based paxs to connect to anywhere in Texas through DFW. Unless this is in anticipation of crossfleeting. UA routinely has upgrade waitlists over 25 on 12-20F aircraft during heavy business travel periods.

I definitely missed this. Is DL canceling SEA-MCO altogether, or just reducing frequency for the summer?

What are you trying to type CKB instead?

It was a charter for the Univ of Texas to lose at West Virginia Univ this last Saturday.

it was 2x. Don't think it has been more than 2x since the re-launch.

It was loaded (not sure if it operated this way) as 1x 757 1x 738 at one point.

I don't see a 753 in June. Either way, UA is a bit player on this route with an oddly timed flight.

They have a much better SFO schedule with 6 daily.

I have to wonder how much longer they will keep a token presence on the LAX-BOS route?

Also BOS-SFO is seven daily, 3 757-300s and 4 737-800s.
