Stored LH A380 At FRA

Sun Nov 15, 2015 7:50 pm

Hello all!

Lufthansa Airbus A380 D-AIMC is currently parked on the future Terminal 3 ramp at FRA. Its engines are all wrapped up and it looks as if it's being prepared for storage. I've never seen this happen with an LH A380. Does anybody know what's going on?

Last flew on 08-November-2015... don't Lufthansa have a history of storing some of their aircraft temporarily over the winter?

Parked due to the strike of last week maybe?

They do to an extent. But an A380 with wrapped engines is certainly something new.

just a guess: It might also need maintenance which has been deferred until later in the winter.

Maybe just for maintenance. Wrapping the engines is something you can do in a short time. That does not mean it will be stored for the whole winter.

In recent times, on which route(s) was this particular A380 customarily used? -ir

My guess is either short term due to last weeks strikes or waiting to go for maintenance. Long term storage would also have the doors taped and all the window blinds would be down, also the tyres would be covered. There have been several of the LH A321s stored over winter previously here in MUC and they always had a lot more covering than you see on that A380.

From what I have read, LH have not yet returned to their normal schedule after the last strike, and they are expecting more strikes in the near future since they were unable to reach an agreement with UFO. This might be the reason.

I would not call these engines all wrapped up for long term storage, more like inlet and tailpipe maintenance covers for short term outside parking.

Whenever we parked our JetStar outside when on the road, even if it was for a few hours company policy was we would put in the engine inlet covers and if left overnight, then we would also put in the tailpipe covers as well, cheap insurance against airborne debris getting into the engines.

Can't help with the A340 for sure (perhaps D-AIGZ, the recent Ebola Jet?) but the Transaero 777 is EI-UNY, which I saw during the first week of November during a trip there.

Good to hear MC is on the move again. I indeed had been wondering where Lufthansa would be placing their A380 frames this winter with the summer rotations to Seoul, New York and Beijing being halted (all changed to B748 for the winter). The Johannesburg A388 rotation (now B748 too) was swapped for Hong Kong leaving only Shanghai, Singapore, Delhi and the US flights to LAX, SFO, MIA and IAH as the other winter A388 services operated by Lufthansa. After the recent industrial action at LH I had seen MC (at the future T3 site) and another frame parked at LH Technik FRA.
My impression is that basically 2 frames are without duties and at least temporarily wfu. I have noticed the odd DXB flight (LH630) being operated with A388 recently, but until anything like the advertised and repeatedly postponed Bombay service becomes reality these planes may indeed be hibernating on/off in FRA and the other frames operating a relaxed schedule this winter.

I think read in the Handelsblatt that LH has 25 Planes stored this winter, behause they do not find routes to put them on without losing money. Only if agreements with the different unions are made it makes sense to run these aircraft.

I flew last night on the LH1806 on a A321, MUC-MAD, and we were only 33 passengers, 2 of them in Business. It was the lowest LF i've ever seen. 8 of them (including myself) were connecting from DME, on a very late arrival, so they decided to delay the departure of LH1806 as a fourth of the passengers were not yet there. We eventually left MUC 1h late, and arrived to MAD 20 mins late. Connecting in MUC was amazing, as we were escorted from the plane in two vans to a special office of migrations and customs and security checks, and then driven to the apron where we boarded the plane on stairs. The crew was happy to close the doors, although it took 20 mins more to take off, because of luggage and, I guess, ATC congestion.

In any other given situation they'd would have rescheduled us for the next available flight, even though it included spending a night in MUC, but well, I felt a bit disappointed by LH, it's overall service has decreased a while. And no one seemed happy. Many of them know they might loose their jobs, and that ruins the mood of the crews, and the ambience of the flight itself.
It was so good just 18 months ago (I then flew EZE-FRA-DME)...

1 single flight with a low load will not mean that the airline is in bad-shape.
The strikes have a short term effect, but not much more than that.
Years ago I've been on LH flights AMS-ZRH with loadfactors below 50 on AB6 equipmt, and LH is still around

I've seen low load factors and an LH A346 TLV-FRA early morning flight on a saturday which explains thaqt and the lowest ever was 12 People on a BA772 LHR-EWR. The average does it and often enough what is loaded into the bellies

Storing 25 aircraft for the winter season is normal, usually These are fully owned aircraft .

That should have been an interesting flight. I guess there was one crew member per passenger. I've flown with only 3 other passengers but in a SF34. Does it counts? Other times, the flight was canceled or delayed, and mixed with the following flight (for instance, VOZ-DME in 7R CRJ200)

The flight from DME to MUC was only 65% full, but I've heard that, statistically, saturdays afternoons as tuesdays are the days less people flies.

I'm sure that MUC-MAD is a profitable route, it was just bad luck.
But being in Madrid just wearing a shirt, and even with the sun shining, is priceless!

Attaching those covers is SOP when the plane is left outside for longer than a few hours.

It seems the frame has been "stored" for all of 19 days and is not stored any longer. As I would 19 days hardly as stored and we do not know if some work was done on the frame, I would propose to close this thread, or change the title if people here need discuss off season storage of frames.

I once flew KHI-DXB on an EK330 with literally 6 pax on board.

There is a lot of cargo on board of KHI flights. They are always fully booked with cargo.

Whatever, the average does it, i agree with others here.

By the way, D-AIGZ and D-AIHY are both in service, you just need to check flightradar.

As per FR24 it looks like D-AIMN was ferried FRA to HAM on DEC 4 as LH9924 and D-AIMA was ferried FRA to China on DEC 5 as LH9920. To me it looks like they are in for some belly scrubbing with LH Technik or HAECO. So indeed the low utilization during the winter season schedule is used to do maintenance on the Lufthansa A380 fleet.
