MIA Spending $651M To Refurbish Central Terminal

Wed Nov 18, 2015 7:30 pm

MIA officials have revealed details about their plans to refurbish the Central Terminal.

Quote:
The airport has embarked on a three year, $651 million renovation, which they say is necessary to keep pace with unexpectedly high growth. That work could quickly be undone, however, as the airport has long-term plans to demolish and replace the Central Terminal, beginning in 2025.

Last week, three renovated gates opened in the E satelite, with a total of nine (seven widebody) expected to come online soon.  A new train connecting the low and high E gates is being built, and jet bridges, ticket counters, and floors throughout E are also being replaced.

At least four new A380 gates are also being built at the airport. The first at E6/E8, is already online and being used by British Airways. Another is planned in the E satelite at E24/E25, with two more in the north and south terminals (D1/D2, H.)

Athough I'm happy with the idea. I'd rather have a new terminal. I don't think waiting until 2025 is smart.

And for Pete's sake, can they please open up an air side corridor between terminals? Connecting to LA from AA at MIA is sooo annoying!

So why spend $651 million to refurbish it when they plan on demolishing it starting in 2025?

I guess money talks and you know what walks. I for one would love MIA to actually restore Concourse G to it's MIMO 50's coolness, while extending and putting the bells and whistles in to make it the terminal of the future.

Concourses E, F, G and H should be torn down and that third of the airport be rebuilt. Its time to end the 1980's never finished projects because Eastern and Pan AM could not pay for them. They had a hard time finishing projects even when they had an airline which could pay for them. AA has had lots of building projects but the D concourse at MIA took the cake.

The new JFK T8 was built fast even with the PANYNJ politics involved. Maybe its just a cultural thing in Miami ?

H is actually considered South terminal and was rebuilt during the Clinton era and spruced up a bit. Air France is one of the airlines that fly out of H. "Central older terminal area E, F and G. E and F got makeovers in the 70's and 80's. Originally they were terminals 2 and 3 built in '59 open air, no a/c, pre jetway.
Around '61 were enclosed and a/c added along with those mini me jetways. G is basically 1959 original. It too got enclosed and a/c around '61 but the 70's makeover passed it by. I do believe it was extended in the 70's or 80's with long standard jetways. The lower G gates had two levels, jetway (mini me) and a stair access for hardstand/prop flights.
H opened around '61 air conditioned and with the mini me jw's serving DL. H originally was badged concourse 1

I can't believe this airport is still under construction.

I remember when they redid the central terminal 10 years ago. They ripped up the old rugs and discovered beautiful flooring beneath.

D is solely AA and they have no A380s. Why an A380 capable gate in D?

MIA is a common use airport. All gates are shared and none are leased out to an airline. It makes sense to have A380 gates spread out.

I was thinking maybe Qatar Airways plans to send the A380 to MIA eventually.

E24 & E25 are "basement" gates that sit a level below the rest of the gates in the satellite. How do they expect an A380's worth of people to wait in that tiny area?

Because the current facilities are an embarrassment.

I don't know what you're referring to. The E and F rebuilds were fully completed in the 1980s, and neither Eastern nor Pan Am used G.

H was almost entirely rebuilt in the 1990s and is every bit as modern as D is.

D was delayed because of mismanagement on AA's part and the project was ultimately finished when the aviation department took back control of it.

To my disappointment, they just finished putting in a new floor over the original 1959 floor.

I see this as an intermediate solution. Which would give them time before a new terminal development in 2025, though such dates can easily slip. Therefore I think it is wise to give the airport this boost which it surely can use.

Many of the lower F concourse gates were going to get more renovations when Pan Am went out of business, The whole south side of F looks much older the north side which was modernized.

The Esstern parts of the airport which AA took over looked like they had been operated by a Bankrupt airline, they were awful and sad. Except for the A concourse( what was) every other EA part was torn down. fairly new concourse B and old C were dust. AA and Miami-Dade spent billions.

Very interesting to see that they're renovating the Satellite E Gates. I was on the SkyTrain a few weeks ago and saw how decrepit it looks. On a side note, does anyone have any photos from the satellite terminal?

We, at Eastern, wanted to build our own international terminal, with customs immigration etc. The damn government shot it down even though we were going to pay for it. Get your facts straight.

Inside there is nothing its even worse than G. Half of it is closed due to renovations and you have to take a bus to go to the satellite gates. Lots of complains because there is only like 2 vending machines there. Ill try and take some pics

thank goodness. MIA is a dump like something out the mid 80's. Shame will take ages to make any difference. Compare with some current modern airports...

You obviously have not been the majority of MIA, because the North Concourse and Concourse J are among the nicest airport facilities in the country, bar none.

The two ends are very nice but the middle( E) to concourse H( where J starts) is very old and original with 1980 updates which were cheaply.

Where Iberia, BA, Santa Barabara, United, and all the way to Delta( not including DL) is crummy. I go to the MIA airport monthly and have since the 1970's, I know the place and have seen all the changes with my own eyes.

I don't disagree, hence the $651M being spent to refurb those areas.

When Eastern was the major airline at MIA the newest concourse was Concourse B which was built in the early 70's and handled the L1011. C and D were part of the original 1959 airport. There was no concourse A. The A concourse opened in the early middle 90's after the death of Eastern and Pan Am. I remember Aces as one of the airlines that operated out of the newer concourse A.
