Takeoff Queue Position

Fri Nov 20, 2015 5:41 am

How is the position of an aircraft in takeoff queue determined? Just curious. I was flying out of AUS yesterday and the pilot announced we were #2 to takeoff, but I had noticed at least 2 aircraft take off before our turn. That got me to thinking how the position of an aircraft determined.

Thank you!

Few factors can alter the cue line up, usually the most important one is if the plane ahead of you is using more or less your same route, then they need to separate 5 mins both departures, usually the controller will say it's for separation, also sometimes for turboprops, they pass a jet ahead because the better performance, so the turboprop won't restrict the climb of the jet in speed or vertical speed, then usually the controller will say it's for expedition.

Depends on wake turbulance, the SID you're departing on, traffic enroute and in the area and it can also be in co-ord with other aerodromes in the vicinity as well as who calls "ready" first..
