AA 32Bs Showing Up At ORD

I spotted a few AA 32Bs at ORD the two times i flew last week. Positive they were AA 321s and not former US birds due to winglets. I don't see these anywhere on the schedule -- where are they flying?

Trying to impress nobody....the 32B is what AA calls their non-transcon A321s (32Ts). It is an important distinction...

I'm a big ol' airline nerd who spends way too much time on this board and I didn't know what 32B stood for. A little bit o' plain English, e.g. "I spotted a few AA 32Bs, AA's AA-side non-premium 321, at ORD the two times i flew last week." wouldn't hurt.

(But water under the bridge.)

AA refers to both the transcon and non-transcon A321 as 32B in the booking engine on AA.com.

Yeh!

By most normal airline&airforce naming conventions (sic), a B variant is a bomber, while the T is a trainer.

What, if anything, are meant by other alphabetic uses - F for freighter, QC for quick change combi?

Surely a long list of these! But it's late Monday, I'm off until tomorrow!

When flying on an AA 321, I would strongly recommend against asking the flight crew if the plane was either of those options.

They do it to confuse us.
Why an A321 without winglets is a 321, and with winglets is a 320B ???

It's 32B, not 320B.

The 737s have the same thing:

737-700W = 73W
737-800W = 73H
737-900W = 73J

I think it's because the IATA code can only be 3 digits, so they can't use 321W/321S etc.

All American Airlines (non-former US Airways) Airbus A321 aircraft are 32B. "32B" is the IATA code for an Airbus A321 with sharklets.

The American Airlines Airbus A321T (transcontinental seating configuration), A321H (standard seating configuration, ETOPS) and A321S (standard seating configuration, non-ETOPS) are visually indistinguishable from one another unless you can spot the "ETOPS" lettering on the A321H.

"32B" is not internal. It is an IATA code, just like the 3-letter airport codes used all the time.

You're confusing the IATA code with AA's internal code. "32S" is the IATA code for any Airbus A320 series aircraft. "A321S" is AA's designation for the standard configuration, non-ETOPS AIrbus A321 with sharklets.

I saw an AA 321 take off from STL today. I think it had winglets, not fences but it was a bit far. I did a double take as I've not seen a 321 in AA colors, or US for that matter at STL. It took off to the n/w around 4pm but did not appear to turn. I thought maybe headed to PHX or LAX.

Looking at the routing for today, I see no LAA 321s scheduled. As such, the most likely reason for them being there is as a sub. They probably sub in from DFW or MIA and hang around in the ORD system for a few days before being routed back to DFW or MIA.

They only have come from MIA from a 738 that went MX and they subbed a 321 in it's place.....For a while there they had them in the schedule flying almost all the ORD-LAX but they were pulled who knows but I would suspect them to show up on MIA runs first..I know they should be getting the 319 back soon DFW-ORD-EGE-ORD-DFW

Are you sure it wasn't an A319? AA uses those on LAX-STL exclusively now.

Unless Flightaware is missing flights, the only AA Airbus flights that took off anywhere near that time window were 319s. The closest match on timing is AA1095, STL-DFW that took off at 4:09 pm local.

I recently flew on a few A32B AA flights on other routes. It is a tad more comfortable than a 738 with the new interiors (leather seats), but not materially so. The experience on take-off and landing was pretty shaky with the A32B, although we had some windy travel days. I also thought that the A32B was noisier. I like the newer 738s a lot overall.

I don't know but I can tell you that AA only flies their transcon A32T between JFK and LAX/SFO, so you won't see these specific aircraft on any other routes and you'd only see them at airports other than JFK/SFO/LAX if they are being diverted or for something like a maintenance reposition. I've flown on the A32T three times and I didn't notice any difference externally from the other A321's. The big difference is on the inside; AA's A32T's have a three class configuration, and the first and business class both have fully lie-flat beds (in first class, each lie flat bed seat is an independent 'pod' similar to AA's international business product). No other AA/US A32x products have this configuration.

The 77W is an internationally accepted code for the 777-300ER. Now the 32B is technically the internationally accepted code for the A321 with sharklets, but in this case is referring more specifically to the non-trans cons PMAA A321s. You can't really expect people to know all the internal AA designations for their planes, just like I have no clue off the top of my head what a DL 75P vs 75Z vs 75N is (I made those up, DL may use one or two of them idk, but you get my point).
