KL 789 In PIK And SNN

Tue Nov 24, 2015 1:47 pm

Hi there,

stumbled on this today:

http://www.flightradar24.com/data/airplanes/ph-bhc/#811a5ef

1 day after operating it's 1 scheduled flight for KLM, PH-BHC seems to have flown from AMS to PIK to SNN today.
Why is this, someones of you knows?

Training flights away from the ever-busy AMS perhaps?

yup, training flights are on schedule for today.

No way they do this at their homebase AMS, I doubt any large airport hosts for such flights.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean...BA flew revenue A380 and 787 flights to FRA and ARN respectively. AF flew their A380 CDG-LHR in 2010 for training too and LH flew numerous MUC-FRA legs on the 380.

Seems like KL have used SNN for a good few years for training

Those KL flights in PIK and SNN are training flights, not revenue (training) flights. KL probably is doing a lot of touch and goes there to train their pilots on this new aircraft. PIK to my knowledge is well known for such training flights from several airlines.

Sounds logical.
indeed, AF and BA operated short hops for A380 training flights on revenue flights, but when you need touch and go training, you'd better not do this on a full revenue flight...

that's trainings flights disguised as revenue flights , not training flights

They also did some XCR-CHR hops last Saturday. Indeed, some small airports offer an interesting package to airlines for training flights. Chateauroux even mentions it on their homepage: http://www.chateauroux-airport.com/

Quote:
Châteauroux-Centre Airport is an industrial airport specialised in: freight, pilot training and aircraft maintenance. It also offers passenger charter flights to southern destinations.

For the 737, they also use GRQ sometimes. For many KLM pilots, this is a well-known airport as the KLM Flight Academy is based there.

KLM hasn't scheduled any of these flights now. However, their choice for AMS-AUH-BAH as a first destination, makes a lot of sense: this routing allows for 4 take-offs and landings every 24 hours on regular revenue flights.

Of course, AUH-BAH isn't really the kind of route the 789s are acquired for - the 333 is better suited here. Once more frames are added to the fleet, we'll be seeing the 789 more and more on long segments. GIG, GRU and CPT are all 12h+ flights where the 787s economy will make a lot of sense.

KLM will also make use of the Common Type Rating of the 777 and 787, so they'll have one pilot pool flying both types. I've read that they are the first airline to do so - can anyone confirm or deny?

KLM Cityhopper F70s and E190s are fairly regular at PIK for training
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!
