China Southern Quit Africa Again

Wed Nov 25, 2015 7:17 pm

For the third time CZ leave the continent, they will stop serving Mauritius from 28 November, flights were from Shenzhen twice weekly with A333, the carrier had twice failed in Lagos and planned service to Luanda and two other routes never started.

The number of Chinese tourists to Mauritius is growing fast, and many Mauritians go to China for business. MK fly to PEK, PVG, CTU and HKG. So was CZ's SZX service just too much capacity? I assume CZ were targetting Chinese tourists from the Pearl River Delta area?

I guess the amount of business between Africa and China is greatly exaggerated.

Sounds like ME3 could be feasting on Chinese business people had they had more traffic rights.

I think they are already hurting for traffic. Fares are cheap. You can fly CAIBKK for $1000 round trip all in on QR or EY in J

Chinese currently build a motorway between EBB and Kampala town and there are a lot of other Chinese construction projects going on in the country but overall I don't see it happening in the near future

If I'm not mistaken, China lifted visa restrictions for Mauritians and as CAN is by far China's most African city it really could've made sense but overall Mauritius is a small market

If ti wasn't for CA and ET competition, my money would be on CAN-ADD

What surprises me is that they flew to MRU from SZX rather than CAN. I think that they'd have much more luck from Guangzhou, both as a larger O&D market and it being their main connecting hub. Tourism from China to Mauritius shouldn't be understated, but Shenzhen strikes me as a strange market to try.

There was a very recent Economist article about the massive Chinese investment in Africa. Suffice it to say the economic returns have fallen very short and Chinese banks are no longer eager to loan money for African projects, the main problem being the local bureacracy and never ending delays in getting projects started... something western companies have had to deal with for decades so no surprise some flights are getting axed.

It's two sided. One of the other complaints was that the Chinese financially backed projects had hired a lot of Chinese (in other places in the world too, ie, Canada) which meant that a lot of locations so no economic benefit from Chinese investment except for the people at the very top of the countries receiving investment. The problem was bad enough that China was running ads, and might still be, explaining how many local people they hire when they make investments in various places in Africa. I'm not there, but I am in China-ish and they do not handle criticism well.

This is likely the answer. If I am a Chinese worker in Africa, I may go home what, 1x / year, or 2x year tops? There may be a lot of one way business but not a lot of business travel off the back of it.

Why dont China Eastern and Hainin fly out of Guangzhou, like HU was denied PEK-NBO route since a second airline cannot fly the same if another is already doing it, and a poster above said CAN-NBO would make more sense.
