Arsenal Flies 14 Minutes To Play At Norwich

Sat Nov 28, 2015 4:58 pm

The Arsenal football team has flown 14 minutes from LTN to NWI. Supposedly to avoid roadworks. Personally, I can understand. Airports are very secured locations, for let's call them VIPs, compared to say, train stations.

Environmentalists may have a point, but, isn't it a bit ridiculous? What do you think?

Regards.

I think it's a waste of time and money, considering the time, from the Emirates Stadium to the airport, time before the flight you have to be there, security, boarding, 14 flight and bus to the hotel, it could take the same or less to do by bus, i'm sure Arsenal bus is comfortable enough for a 2-3 hours journey.

Teams in Spain use the train often, I think they can even charter trains for the team.

Firstly think about this Arsenals training ground is in London Colney and many of their players reside in the humble surrounding of St Albans, Harpenden and Radlett environs.

Driving distance up to Luton is but 20 or so minutes from the training ground !

Through to exec lounge and on to the bmiR RJ in minutes and off the Norwich.

Any one like the drive to Norwich along the A11 and through the mess of roadworks around Thetford forest - i know i don't

Still a road coach would seem the most price competitive if traveling the day before the match.

As for Hotels there are some pretty descent country retreats in the area

I think Arsenals normal home attendances are always around 60000. It's the Premier League. They are idolised just like film stars and rock stars, so I certainly wouldn't expect them to be standing on London Liverpool Street waiting for a train to Norwich.

I live in Norwich.

I have driven the A11 and taken the train to/from London enough times to be interested in flying from Luton

Really ?

All Ligue 1 teams charter planes (except for some matches between cities really close to each others of course).
Most of Ligue 2 teams do the same.

Last Saturday morning, Messi et al. took the high-speed train from Barcelona's Sants Station to travel to Madrid, and then proceeded to beat Real Madrid in the afternoon. Nothing wrong with AVE.

In Germany, they sometimes do it too.

http://twitter.com/wobscorer/status/566369945366573056 is a picture of VfL Wolfsburg players having to sit on the aisle. The had 1st class tickets booked, but the trainset with their seat numbers didn't come... so their seat reservations were invalid, and they had to make do with the floor.

Wolfsburg - CGN is 3 hours 13 by train, and about 3:30 by car, but this ignores the important caveat that the buses have a speed limit of 100 km/h.

The roadworks are long over, Norwich is finally linked to the rest of the World by a dual carriageway road

It seems ironic that the Govt has spent a vast sum to finally build a decent road to Norwich and now Arsenal decide to fly there.
There doesn't seem to be any major roadworks listed for the journey from Colney to Norwich so not sure how they worked that justification.

I better see photos of either a EK 77W or an A380 landing at NWI when I fire up a.net tomorrow. Cause when you go nuts, you go nuts in style and all-in!

If they play tomorrow they could've arranged some horses and luxury carriages and still arrive on time. This is going to give them loads of criticism and mockery which they fully deserve in my opinion. Arsenal did beat the record that was set by their arch rivals Spurs though. They chartered a plane for a 120 miles trip to Bournemouth, so beating them in that must be an achievement. Next will be Man Utd chartering a jet to play Liverpool away. Manager Louis van Gaal is bonkers enough to do it.

Spot on, and its more like 60,000 that see them at home.

The game isn't until Sunday but its standard Arsenal procedure that the team flies in the night before any match. Even in London at the Emirates the team stays at the team hotel the night before home matches. I'm sure Arsenal aren't the only ones who do this.

Senk ju for träwälling wis Deutsche Bahn. Funny picture. I do not really buy the story though, because they are clearly sitting in an ICE train, so no missing cars there. Maybe one of the two ICE sets of this routing did not show up - the trains split up in Dortmund ,and only one of them continues to Cologne.

Who knows. Good to see they travel with DB, though.

Alas, here in Denmark it's just the fans who get specially chartered trains (or extra DMU sets attached to the regular trains, rather). The rules are bit more relaxed regarding drinking etc., we don't mingle with the normal pax, and with a fixed fare in place, some of the longer trips are a massive bargain.

Just a shame the clubs are about to wreck away attendance figures.

Most teams charters a bus for their transportation teams, except when the teams from Copenhagen are playing Aalborg (and the other way around), where it's usually faster to fly CPH - AAL.

Often, when Arsenal play up Manchester way they charter a train from Virgin. They go from Watford Junction to the likes of Stockport before their Team Bus, which has already gone up ahead, then carries them to the Etihad or wherever.

If you live near St Albans then yes, Luton's VIP terminal is probably lovely for speeding through and going out the other side. I can't honestly say I would expect that there isn't money in the Arsenal coffers for all of this extravagance when they are the most expensive Club to watch in the Premier League.

Just a shame they're not as good as the mighty Spurs. Feet firmly planted on the ground, those guys.

The Arsenal team arrived last night on G-RJXA, a BMI Regional Embraer ERJ-145, operating as BMR8502.

Info on EGSH Movements, pictures from the Daily Mirror.

Kick off in just under two hours, let's see if the night in a Norwich Premier Inn did them any good

As others have mentioned, Arsenal (like other clubs) take a train or coach for the majority of their domestic matches. The logistics of getting to Norwich via ground transportation just made a quick flight a much more attractive option for this match.

And, for those looking for EK charters, you'll be sorely disappointed. Arsenal typically charter a VIP 757 for their Champions League matches. For what it's worth, they did take EK for their pre-season warm-up matches in Singapore, though.

Oh, and, uh...COME ON YOU GUNNERS!  Wink

Yeah, the logistics argument is rubbish - I do Bedford-Norwich a couple of times a month with no issues at all. The A11 is a straight through run now the widening has been completed, I can do the Bedford run in under 2.5 hours, and I can get to Stratford in the same time from Norwich.

Flying Luton-Norwich is a little ridiculous in this instance.

It would probably be faster for the coach to just drive straight to their hotel in Norwich, as it only takes 1 hour more than the drive to Luton. At the very most they saved 15 minutes.

Arsenal are not only sending out a signal to the environmentalists saying: "we don't care what you think." The other issue here is that Arsenal's money flow partly comes from devoted, supporting and loving fans that invest a lot of money to watch their team play. And so the Arsenal fans I know all have raised some concerns with this particular case. Concerns that bubble up from years and years of disappointment with Arsenal's outrageous season tickets prices. For instance, they have the most expensive season tickets in Europe. And the cheapest season ticket costs more than the most expensive season ticket at any club outside London in the Premier League. Despite many protests outside the stadium, the board has been ignoring the fans completely and refused to lower the prices. The fans have also been heavily criticizing the club's transfer policy for not showing enough willingness to invest on better players in order to compete with their rivals.

10 years of finishing either 3rd or 4th in the league, and selling star players to direct opponents, has understandingly made the fans a bit antsy. While the whole 'sound economy' and lack of a sugar daddy is all nice and well, what the fans want is to win the Premier League.

I don't think I am what anybody would call an environmentalist but isn't this a bit ridiculous? Even on a site devoted to airlines and aviation, flying a 15-minute flight to "avoid traffic" is a bit pompous and conceited for a major sports club - these overpaid babies could have surely slummed it on a coach bus for a couple of hours. I'm not picking on Arsenal because this could probably be said of a lot of football teams' travel, but this does not pass the common sense test to me.

I realize Arsenal's main sponsor is an airline but are you telling me that a Train Operating Company (TOC) in the UK couldnt have secured a private train, or at least a couple of coaches, for them to travel (assuming the idea of sitting on a bus for a couple of hours was that unappealing?) While it may not have been much cheaper than flying, it would have been considerably more desirable from a PR perspective and it wouldn't have taken much longer.

That's what I was thinking. Wedging Sanchez with his tight hamstring into an ERJ after a match doesn't sound too clever to me, not to mention Koscielny and Carzola. The VIP coaches they use to travel in are relatively spacious, and surely the trip time difference would be negligible.

On the other hand, maybe Arsene's favourite film is "Clockwise" and the thought of a cross country trip to Norwich via muddy fields and monasteries didn't appeal.
Down with that sort of thing!

Arsenal's training ground is a little bit out of the way. To get to Norwich by train would probably entail heading back into London, then taking the Norwich train. Even then they would need to travel from the station to their hotel.

As it was they probably went by coach to Luton Airport and coach from Norwich airport to their hotel.
I realise that the flight was only 14 minutes but the plane would have needed to taxi out at Luton then taxi in at Norwich.
Once you include the time through the terminals and the 25 or so minute trip to Luton airport plus any time to the hotel at the far end it starts to make the 2 hour coach journey door to door look very attractive, as they can't have done this door to door in much under 90 minutes.

Do they charter on a one-by-one basis? Maybe they have an agreement with bmi regional in place for a certain amount of flying per season so it made sense economically as it was already paid for? Just wondering..
