40 Min. Turnaround For Delta B764 At FRA?

Sat Nov 28, 2015 11:10 pm

I was thinking about going to Frankfurt next Sept. and checked out the prices on the Delta website. Does this schedule make sense? 40 minutes seems fine for a 737 or 320, but a 764? By the way, I like the earlier dep. from FRA with a early afternoon arrival at JFK (the current DL flight from FRA arrives at 16:30).

8 Sept. 2016

You're assuming that it's the same plane....I'm guessing that DL14 that arrives FRA from ATL at 855am will be the plane going to JFK, and the plane arriving from JFK at 10am will go to ATL at 1145am

Isn't there perhaps another flight arriving earlier from JFK or another city, thus providing the aircraft for DL 400?

I would imagine, and this is just me making a guess, that two different planes are rotated in FRA. Probably the one operating DL 400 is a plane that arrived earlier from another city. You may check the schedules again to see which other DL flight operated by a 764 arrives earlier.

That actually makes sense given that the current plane from JFK spends 3-4 hours on the ground at FRA. Will DL save money on fees at FRA ?

Thanks.

QF used to routinely turn around a 763 in 40 minutes - although to be fair this was only for a max 5 hour trans con.

I think Australia requires positive bag match on all flights, domestic or international.

Huh???...Domestic checked baggage security policies here in Australia are the same as International, requiring positive bag match. Anyway, timewise that would make no difference to the turnaround of an aircraft. Impressive because that included a clean and catering too (as QF domestic is full service still with comp meals and drinks for all pax).

But a 764 carriers a few more passengers...possible in 40min turnaround if you are using dual aerobridges...be a bit tight otherwise I think. Break it down into a time frame...say 10min from on blocks to disembark all pax/crew, 15min for a very quick clean and cater and new crew to board and perform security checks, then 15min to board all pax and pushback. It is certainly doable, but leaves little room for any delay.

The rotation looks to be "planned" as follows

DL 4 JFK-FRA Arr 10:00 turns DL 15 FRA-ATL Dep 11:45

DL 86 DTW-FRA Arr 08:15 turns DL 87 FRA-DTW Dep 10:00

DL 14 ATL-FRA Arr 08:55 turns DL 400 FRA-JFK Dep 10:40

Hope that clears things up.

Really? That would be a sight to behold to be honest.. You'd need an army of cleaners and pax without hand baggage or disabilities and even then I'd say it's not possible to get a 764 going again in 40 mins..

Puts them at scheduled turn times of 1:45 for each flight. Much more in line with Int'l turn times.

It's definitely doable, but you need to properly staff your ramp and fleet service. Airlines in Asia routinely turn 777s in an hour or less.

Unfortunately it almost certainly couldn't be done at a US airline though. Not to knock DL or anyone else, but (1) US airlines don't properly resource the ramp and only have on the bare number of people necessary, just 3 or 4 people downstairs will never be able to do it, and (2) see other thread about oversized baggage in the US, it takes longer to board a flight in the US than anywhere else I know, that's just reality.
