Air China To Start Havana Service Via Montreal

Wed Dec 02, 2015 12:55 pm

I just read Air China plans on flying Beijing to Havana via Montreal

Are there that many Chinese tourists in Cuba or is the Chinese government just poking the US in the eye?

This was announced a while back and posted here. There are sufficient drivers from a commerce and tourism perspective for this route. As for the political slant, this would be more to bolster ties between Cuba and China. Not everything is about the USA...

Yes, starting December 27. It's been mentioned here: YUL: Enhanced Air Services This Winter (by SpaceshipDC10 Nov 21 2015 in Civil Aviation)

It's a political add, as are most Chinese airline adds

CA already has fares through next fall at very good rates on YUL HAV, I doubt many Chinese tourists will go to Cuba but the fifth-freedom tourist traffic from YUL to HAV is very strong and will likely grow with this new route.

From Wikipedia :

Bilateral trade between China and Cuba in 2005 totaled US$777 million, of which US$560 million were Chinese exports to Cuba.[2] China is sending a growing amount of durable goods to Cuba. Chinese goods have become the primary tools both in the planned revitalization of Cuban transport infrastructure and in the “Energy Revolution” of 2006 to provide electricity to the Cuban population.
In 2005 Cuba had exports of $2.4 billion, ranking 114 of 226 world countries, and imports of $6.9 billion, ranking 87 of 226 countries.[184] Its major export partners are Canada 17.7%, China 16.9%, Venezuela 12.5%, Netherlands 9%, and Spain 5.9% (2012).[185]

There is a business and government traffic between Cuba and China, right now most of that traffic goes through CDG and AMS.

This flight is actually smarter than most think (although the gauge might be a tad large) :

1. Opens the only YUL to East Asia link

2. Links HAV to their 2 largest trade partners

3. AC's YUL hub providing lots of feed

4. Compliment's AC's offerings to HAV instead of directing competing with them (AC doesn't fly YUL-HAV

Rent and food are dirt cheap, but internet access is very expensive apparently

But in order to have a sense of "how expensive XYZ to live in", one has to adjust for local wage levels too.

Someone moving there from Pakistan for a couple of years is claiming its too expensive to keep pets there, so are giving away their nearly 10 years old dogs, just wanted to confirm and let them know.

I'd be surprised if AC helps CA in any way. They're going to want all the traffic to stay on their own/JV metal.
