As far as OMA, looks like WN will hit 20 daily departures, the first time ever this has happened.
LAX 1x
PHX 1x
LAS 3x
DEN 3x
DAL 1x
MCO 1x
DCA 1x
STL 3x
MDW 6x

(there are a few reductions and a few adds on saturday's, otherwise the other 6 days of the week are all the 20x daily flights)

Correct, this is the first time they have served more than 7 different destinations. DCA starts in March and DAL started last August, immediately after LAX and MCO were seasonally discontinued and both LAX and MCO come back this coming summer.

Interesting thing, OMA is the only city served from DCA that isn't served from BWI. I would have expected a BWI add way before DCA was ever added. Unless WN takes a stab at short haul, MSP or MKE from OMA, the only other potential city in my mind is HOU.

Well they are only going to have what 8 Saturdays under this schedule, and I assume it'll be done with August extension. So not that much of

Also, isn't SEA-AUS new?

SAN will see 3x daily flights to BWI for the first time, plus, as mentioned earlier in the thread, the Sat only MKE flight is back (later than last year but back at least.) Maybe it'll stick around longer next year...

We have 103 daily departures on this extension, the largest peak summer count since 2008, although the total is one less than the April 2016 schedule. Our # of nonstop destinations remains at 26.

One thing I notice is that there is a great increase in evening departures from SAN, to medium and long-haul destinations, with arrivals at those destinations (such as MDW & BWI) well after midnight. Not quite what I would classify as red-eyes, but getting closer?

Overall, until the WN-issued recap comes out, this extension looks to have a few goodies but nothing tremendous.

WN will avoid Canada like the plague at least until the looney recovers. The massive currency headwind right now kills the business case. They certainly have more Carib/Central Am routes they could add where they will earn in USD.

Recovery? Over the past few decades, the USD has been stronger than the CAD, sans a few periods where the CAD briefly gains equal or greater strength. If WN can't handle Canada because of this, might as well stay out of the market forever since even if the CAD "recovers," it'll likely be short-lived.

I don't think ALB-MCO has ever been once daily. I wonder how B6 is affecting them on the route. That said, nice to see that ALB-DEN is back, even if it is just once weekly. I fail to see the seasonal, Saturday only nature of the flight though. Maybe running it daily would ruin the performance of ALB-LAS.

Edit: I see they added a Saturday only CHS-DEN flight. Interesting.

Personally, CMH-HOU/MCI would be fantastic additions. Both would likely be the next logical cities to expand service from CMH. Long run would be CMH-MSY, though G4 appears to have had some success on LCK-MSY, so it might not be completely out of the question.

You're right on MCI. There has to be some demand there because SX, YX/F9 and DL all tried (I think YX/F9 had a couple connections to the West Coast). None lasted, but WN would have the possibility of a number of onward connections from there and if anybody could make MCI stick, it'd be WN. Nobody's ever done CMH-HOU but, again, same situation.

MSY is interesting. It came out of left field with G4 and only runs around Mardi Gras, but they must've found something there because it wasn't a one-and-done.

I keep waiting for them to add a DSM-DEN flight. I doubt F9 will last much longer on that route as they're ending most non-daily flights out of DEN. I could see WN taking over whenever F9 leaves.

There are a number of us hoping for this. Losing the MDW flights in April for STL removes a lot of connectivity and flight options.

This is kind of a trend in these WN Schedule Release threads. A couple people "in the know" or who have "reliable sources" come out with crazy, or doom and gloom rumors that 97% end up being just that, rumors.

With it all being done via a computer program now, I doubt anyone on here will have actual, reliable information that they are going to share since so few people will have the knowledge of the changes before they are announced. It'll be much easier for the company to figure out who exactly is the leaky faucet.

oh, and unless there are updates to a/c type later on, there are still 7 735's through the end of the released schedule. Someone posted that they were going away in the first half of the year, which appears to be false.

DAL-HOU has several flights next August scheduled to be on 735's.

Is the OAK-RNO flight seasonal? Interesting that some of the short segments that have disappeared (another example would be MDW-IND) are reappearing. They're also adding new short segments (other schedule releases) including MDW-GRR, ATL-GSP and others.

3 out of the 5 new/returning routes touch STL. Our little connecting station is chugging along quite nicely now. PIT/LIT/ICT and now OAK (Looooooong overdue) and PDX. Can we ever get SAN back on a permanent basis?

Of course CUN/PVR/MBJ/BDL/ABQ would be most welcome.

Not surprising, and not likely to be seasonal. Maybe we can rename this the Tesla express. OAK is about 20 minutes from the Tesla assembly plant in Fremont, and RNO is about the same time to the new battery factory east of Reno.

I think if Tesla traffic was the goal, the service would be from SJC rather than OAK - definitely closer/easier to reach from Tesla's facility in Fremont most of the day. It's almost never possible to reach OAK from Tesla in 20 minutes.

If MDW didn't work there is no hope for STL to work. It has a tiny fraction of the O/D traffic that MDW has, and much poorer connections. And with no DEN, no PHX, and infrequent LAS flights, DSM has never really been part of the WN system.

Both FNT and CAK went to only one destination in the last schedule extension and now get additional Saturday service to MCO. Good to see WN isn't giving up yet on those two cities yet.

I also find it interesting that in Bill's usual blog post he also added, "And no markets are being permanently discontinued!"

I don't know if I'd call the LAS flights infrequent, the flight has been daily ever since the it began in Sept 2013, and has been well timed for LAS vacation goers, as well as western connections. This flight was even up-gauged to a 738 this fall.

Also, WN traffic at DSM has been growing. This September and October, WN's traffic at DSM was up 17% over last year, with no additional flights. And although Chicago has more O/D traffic than STL from DSM, WN is competing with AA and UA's 12-13 daily flights to ORD, both airlines have much higher market share at DSM. WN also currently has the highest market share DSM-STL, according to the most recent consumer airfare report, and a route that will have no competition and is a 5+ hour drive. And although STL doesn't have the same number of connection possibilities, it still hits all of the major markets out of DSM.

I agree that a DEN and/or PHX flight from DSM would do well and better solidify our position in WN's route structure. But until they're added, I don't think DSM is as doomed as people think. And I'm sure WN will give the DSM-STL at least a year before they decide to pull the plug.

WN's PDX-STL service announcement may force AS to upgrade that service to mainline.

I flew 15 years ago OAK-RNO-OAK on WN. It is not new route.

Seldom have I seen so many people up in arms over a little old addition like DSM / ICT - STL. And, as discussed above, its a coin flip whether I'd rather be in the DSM - CHI market with 12 other daily flights as opposed to DSM - STL, which likely does have some meaningful business connections.

In other news, the Oakland and Portland additions are welcome but I wonder if this will kill A) SFO or B) AS's PDX flight. I'm inclined to believe that one or the other will bite the dust, because the capacity to the west coast is becoming very, very significant. United's Cleveland will almost certainly meet its demise as well.

As a St. Louisan I feel very fortunate to have Southwest as our primary air service provider, because it could certainly be a lot worse without them. RHN is also acquitting herself quite nicely as our Airport Director and I'm guessing her crowning achievement of a Europe flight will occur S17.

I'm happy to have the STL link. It saves time over connecting at MDW. The downside is that there are some cities like CHS that we cannot get to, unless we double connect/buy two tickets.

I'm bummed because we have a CP and try to use WN as much as possible.

Who said it was? I think everyone knows it is a reinstatement from only a few years ago.
I hope the restart shorter routes continues while viable and perhaps see BOS-ISP lol. JK about that last part.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

I think if Tesla traffic was the goal, the service would be from SJC rather than OAK - definitely closer/easier to reach from Tesla's facility in Fremont most of the day. It's almost never possible to reach OAK from Tesla in 20 minutes.

I thought about that too. Tesla won't fill 3 flights a day, but they might provide a nice base. After that you need connecting and O&D traffic. I think OAK has more connection possibilities on WN than SJC does.

I also think the flight time is a bit less from OAK. No need to do the climbing spiral out of SJC trying to avoid the rest of the Bay Area air traffic.

I haven't been to OAK in a while (since WN stopped flying there from RNO) but don't they now have a better BART connection than before? I would rather fly WN to OAK than SFO if I am going to the city. I expect I will fly RNO to OAK a couple of RTs a year for visits to downtown SF.
