Qatar Apparently To Use T2 At LAX

Sat Dec 05, 2015 4:38 am

At LAX tonight and just passed T2. Signs for Qatar are up. I'm fairly shocked they aren't using Bradley, especially with the excellent OW lounges there and the new connector to AA.

Anyone know why they decided to use T2?

I am very, very curious on what QR was thinking on this one. T2 is getting better with the remodel, but TBIT is far more modern and up to standards. Hopefully QR will move to TBIT once they realize they need to send the A380

I was just looking up T2 at LAX and forgot that my Air New Zealand flight on Sunday now is at TBIT. Thankfully. T2 is a sucky experience. This pic is similar to my last flights out of there. I have no idea why a premium airline like Qatar would fly out of there unless there was no space elsewhere.

Flown 2018: LAX, ARN, DXB, ALA, TAS, UCG, ASB, MYP, GYD, TBS, KUT, BER, TLS, SVO, CCF, DUB, LGW, MEX, BUR, PDX, ORD, SLC, SNA
Upcoming 2018: STL, MIA, BZE, IAH, BHM, LHR, DFW, PHX

Both Hainan and Qatar are headed to T-2, which is already starting to look quite different with the remodel.

QR seeks to build its own lounge, something it cant do at TBIT.

Here is a video of what the new T2 will look like, by Westfield, the Australian retail developer who was in charge of retail and food at TBIT:

This is what I thinking might be a motive. QR is weird about lounge access.

TBIT lounges are far nicer than what T2 has to offer. I hope rumors are true that QR plans to build a lounge, however I've heard the same rumor for MIA, DFW and IAD.

Another reason T2 was chosen was QR's fear that more checked bags are lost at TBIT vs T2.

In my opinion, QR should have chose TBIT, as it would have offered a seamless connection for pax connecting from AA onto QR.

Seeing that T-2, can not handle VLA's, it looks like EK is going to be the only ME3 airline, to fly A380s, into LAX.

It's not like QR and EY can even if they wanted to. They both don't have enough A380s.

Once all the work is complete T-2 will have a single VLA gate.

Also once complete T-2 will essentially look and feel like TBIT. The same company that designed and runs TBIT concessions is behind T-2 remodel.

Lastly keep in mind each terminal also has its own cost structure. T-2 at the moment has some financial benefits versus TBIT. I'd expect a couple more airlines end up in T-2 before 2016 is done.

It will be interesting to see widebodies squeezed into the alleys around T-2.

How far along is the remodel of T-2?

T2 can handle 747s. At least that was the case before the remodel started. Don't know what the situation is right now.
Are you ruling out EY?

Widebodies have always operated at T-2. Remember terminal was built from the ground up for Pan Am and Northwest in 1988/1989 and has been the hold of widebody operators like Air NZ, KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Air China etc.

Total projext ends by Q1 2017.

So far the eastside ticket lobby is finished with west lobby by May 2016. Back end infrastructure such as baggage sorting and arrival carousels along with new passenger bridges is in progress. Concession relocations and gate area work in progress.

No doubt TBIT is nice, but Terminal-2 is much more convenient in my view.

Its smaller scale makes it much more management and easy to traverse. The distances involved at new TBIT from counter to gates and gates back via customs to the street make it quite a journey. T-2 is extremely easy in, and easy out. With some cosmetic improvements I'm sure it will be even more appealing.

Westfield's portion of the remodel is MOSTLY done some new concessions are a bit delayed moving in others are already open - remaining should open in Q1 2016. The LAWA portion (ticketing and all landside) as LAXIntl stated is ongpoing

1) why would that exclude EY, who goes to TBIT

2) T2 will eventually be able to handle VLAs

3) LAX isn't exactly hurting for A380 operators; so even if they don't bring them, you still have 9 other airlines to choose from-- more than anywhere else, IINM.

I'm surprised Norwegian didn't chose to go to T2. Probably cheaper there and for them, lounges are not that important.

Does QR actually get a choice as to which terminal they want to fly in to or does the airport decide?

Also a second Hainan Chinese subsidiary is also securing permits for LAX service.

Yes airlines chose their homes and negotiate for terminal facilities, pick handling agents, etc.

Is there even a space available for a Qatar Lounge now that American Express has a lounge there.

terminal 2 allows QR a blank custom space since all the main former T2 airline moved into TBIT.

T2 is fair bit nicer when I went through back in August than when I remember last time I went a few years back. Not sure if all the reconstruction is finished though??

There is enough space for multiple lounges. There is even a rumor that AmEx is looking for space in the high D gates to build a second lounge due to insane overcrowding issues.

Didn't QR request to use D14 specifically because it was adjacent to the existing Admirals Club?

I thought AMEX took the space QR planned to use (the former BA lounge) and that there was no more space left, but if Mark says there is, I'm inclined to trust him.

QR was forced to move to Concourse E by AA because of AA's need of gate D14 during the time QR is on the ground at MIA.

I've been wondering about the T2 remodel. Unlike the T1 work - which is physically evident as you drive by and see new steelwork going up around the building - the T2 project isn't really apparent from the outside.

I am a bit disappointed that the T2 lobby work didn't include raising the ceilings over the ticket counters. T2 has a nice big atrium in the middle, but the ticket areas are claustrophobic as hell with ceilings you can almost reach up and touch. AA raised the T4 ceilings during the 2001 redo and it made a huge difference.

Also hope that the project includes some smartening up of the gate areas themselves. If it's anything like the project at T6, it will just make them look even dumpier as sleek new restaurants and shops move in. Westfield's T6 work doesn't appear to be touching the actual passenger circulation areas and gate holdrooms (but it's still underway so please correct me if I'm wrong!)
