AS Q400 Hits Deer While Landing

Sun Dec 06, 2015 6:46 am

Glad everything turned out okay for the people on board. Too bad for the deer, though...

http://www.usnews.com/news/offbeat/a...ring-landing-at-california-airport

Article quote:

"SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — An Alaska Airlines plane has struck and killed a deer while landing at the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat on Saturday (http://bit.ly/1Q7vi3Y) the deer apparently wandered into the planes' path and was hit Wednesday.

Egan says the plane was scheduled to continue on to Los Angeles, but that flight was canceled so the aircraft could be inspected."

Hmm...That's a new one    Deer happens to be my favorite animal.

Their bizarre fascination with roads (and runways) is an interesting one to say the least.

"The plane had not yet touched ground and was only a few hundred feet along the 6,000-foot runway when it clipped the deer just before 6 p.m., Stout said. The impact from the deer's antlers punctured one of the plane's tires, and both tires were replaced, Stout said."

True, but now especially as QX is flying under the Alaska name, the name "Horizon" will more and more be leaving the public consciousness, especially outside of the PNW.

Okay, so bird strikes are not terribly uncommon...as for other animals, AS had the salmon "strike" incident, and now the deer. Any other "unconventional" animal strikes on record?

I've heard that deer antlers are sharp, but to puncture a tire on an aircraft? Wow. Must have been a fluke?

I wonder if it was a female deer ...

If it was then the pilots, when it impacted would have cried out "D'oh!" (best Homer Simpson voice)

A fluke would have meant that they hit a whale!!

Yes, deer antlers are very sharp and hitting a rack at high speed would have done damage to the tires.

Happened I wouldn't say frequently but certainly a few times growing up in ACV until they installed the new taller perimeter fence just for that reason. I seem to remember a Mesa/WestAir Brasilia getting pretty badly dinged up after hitting a deer on approach there

Edit: found one incident, but I seem to remember YV being involved in one too. This one was OO

Coming across a deer with antlers in heat, it can gut you like the sharpest scalpel.

I wonder who picked up the carcass. Deer tamales are one of my favorites and are only available this time of year.

While I worked at KSMF there was a coyote that had been struck by a plane. I don't remember the details.

What's the maximum certified altitude and airspeed of a sleigh with one reindeer out?

If that deer happened to be Rudolph, then I'd imagine the sleigh would no longer be certified for Cat III approaches, either.

I know about the in-flight fish strike. That was stuff of aviation lore.

I'm familiar with the location of STS, but didn't expect that deer would be in that area. The closest I would have expected would be maybe along the Russian River. Do deer populate the Santa Rosa area much?

You got that right. I heard of tractor trailors hitting dears, I heard of buses hitting dears, but a ship or a plane, should not be hitting dears. There should have been better fencing around the runway.

It may be immaterial anyway as the rooftops they land on are not instrumented.    Also, approaches are doubly difficult since they usually operate during inclement weather with near zero visibility.

However, I'm guessing Santa's rig is exempted from all these requirements.

A couple of years ago, my parents and I chartered a plane (OK, it was a 6-seater Cessna!) to fly to a camp in the Okavange Delta. Coming in to land, the pilot had to buzz the landing strip to make sure there were no elephants (or cattle) around!

We spoke to the lady who ran the camp, and she mentioned that fences were pointless around the landing strip (although they did have them), because elephants would simply push them over. Once the elephants had gone through the fence, cattle and all manner of wildlife would follow.

There are airports here in the Northwest that can have elk roaming on them. A lot bigger than a deer.

I just flew that plane yesterday (N419QX). The log entry stated that they thought they may have hit a deer (one was seen on the edge of the runway) but not certain. After post flight inspection a tire was flat. The tire was replaced and it was returned to service. The FO was brand new and did a fantastic job; airport ops even gave him part of the deer antler as a memento.

Back in the early 1980's, AirCal hit two deer in Buffalo while on a charter, with a then very new DC9-80. I think N479AC. It was laid up for several days there as nobody back east had the plane in service and no parts. When it came back into service out West, it had two deer " kills" stamped under the Captain's window.

More than once on QX Q200s we had done a go around due to deer and I think there was even one time that there was either a cow or horse on the runway in LWS.
