Longest RJ Flights By Aircraft Type And Airline

Wed Dec 09, 2015 12:57 am

What are some of the longest RJ flights by aircraft type and airline, and what are some longer markets where we might see them one day?

Definitely their flights to North America (JFK, YUL & ORD), all operated by 788s.

Much longer than their asian destinations (BKK, KUL) that are operated by a mix of 788/332.

I would put my money on UA across the board. A lot of long haul markets considering their route map and the fact that 73.8% of their fleet is ERJ-135/145.

RJ in the subject refers to "Regional Jets" not Royal Jordanian Airlines.

Really depends on the "RJ" model as well. CR2, CR7, E135, E145, etc.

DL puts the CR2 on MSP-TUL. 615 miles.

Didn't they have a EWR-DEN flight on the ERJ-145 at one time? I don't see that one on their timetable currently, but I do see EWR-OKC which is nearly 4 hours on an ERJ.

I much prefer the AC Embraer 190 used on the AC routes previously mentioned to the A320 or 737. Never having to worry about winding up in a middle seat is a big advantage. The E190 seats and aisle are also wider than on the 737 and about the same as the A320.

I thought he meant ERJ135/145. The bigger ones are fine, but UA's flagship would be brutal on a route like that

But the tighter fuselage curve means that the window seat doesn't have enough headroom. But if you stick to the aisle, yeah I am a fan myself.

You referred to "the AC routes previously mentioned" (e.g. SEA-YYZ and YYC-EWR) which are operated by the E190.

DL's rule is to not operate single class CRJ-200 or ERJs on routes longer than 750 miles.
There are a handful of routes in the 600-700 mile range operated by CRJ-200/ERJ-145s but most are significantly less.

US has sometimes flown PHX-CLT on a CR9 for repositioning and allowed customers to book the flight.

It seems they could grow SLC significantly if they didn't have that rule, I hope it won't apply to their E190.

EDIT: Oh wait you said single class, I actually think that is a good rule then.

OO was flying for UA IAD-COS on a CRJ-700.

EV was flying for CO/UA IAH-YYZ on a ERJ-145.

I also know that EV does some really long Mexico flying out of IAH on the ERJ-145.

The longest E175 flight I can think of on any carrier off the top of my head is SFO-STL on UA clocking in at 1,735 miles. As previously mentioned, I think UA also has the longest ERJ flight on EWR-OKC at 1,325 miles.

I believe AS's longest RJ flight is PDX-STL on the E175 at 1,708 miles.

Ive done EWR-OKC on the E145XR and it is barely tolerable on the A side. I can tolerate the ERJ for flights for up to 1.5 hours, but longer than that I pass if I can. The curvature of the fuselage intrudes into not only my shoulder room, but also my foot space as well. That flight is almost 4 hours, and Ive done it twice.

The other one (while not an RJ) is the BDL-YYZ flight. it is 2.5 hours on a B1900. AC has much longer RJ flights, but that is a long flight for a B1900

From my time at XE a few years ago, the longest ones I remember on the E145 were:

United Express

EWR-TUL
EWR-OKC
EWR-YYT
IAH-YYZ
CLE-ABQ
IAH-BFL
IAH-BOI
IAH-NAS

Delta Connection
LAX-OKC
LAX-MFE
LAX-ACA
LAX-BJX

Expresjet Branded
OMA-SAN
AUS-SMF
OMA-SMF
SAN-OKC

It was actually IAH-FRS if I recall. That didn't last too long

I'm sure there were others, but I can't recall them all. They were brutal on pax and crew. But at least the planes were newer back then, and CO served light meals and all that jazz.

Back in the early 2000's I unwittingly booked a flight on DL from ATL-MEX and did not realize it was on a CRJ-200! This was back in 2002 or 2003. We flew within 5 miles of the coastline the whole way. I know Great Circle Mapper lists ATL-MEX as 1330 miles but going around the Gulf along the coast must have been 1600 and it was almost a five hour flight. I remember it being almost full also. NOT FUN!

Never again just booked the flight without paying attention to the equipment.

This has been discontinued as Mesa no longer has a base at CLT.

Longest AA CR9 route that I can think of is LAX-XNA at 1371 miles (PHX-MEM and PHX-YVR aren't too far behind). MQ flies ORD-ABQ which is a tad under 1200 miles on the CR7. When PHX-DSM originally went to Express, it was on a OO CRJ.

Quoting infiniti329 (Reply 36):

On a good day it was weight restricted to about 60 and the bookings really depended on the day. More often than not, over half the seats were given to revenue standbys and some gutsy non-revs.

I was on an AC flight from YYZ to SEA back in September sitting in C class (coming originally from MXP with the first dreamliner operation into Malpensa). It was a 4h+ flight and due to thunderstorms on the route it was quite a bumpy ride. However I did not feel different than being in an A320 or a B737. Service wise there was also no difference to lager planes. Anyhow AC was a well above average experience compared to other carrier from North America. Especially my wife liked the fact that she could speak French (she used to life in the French speaking part of Switzerland for almost 10 years) because here English is not as good as her French.

It doesn't really matter so long as you use the same units for direct comparison. At any rate, AS has not announced any E75 routes longer than PDX-STL, so not sure to what route you are referring. Do you know something we don't?

What are your reasons to hate all regional jets? While I do agree the CRJ-200s are less than optimal, especially the ERJ135/145 are very comfortable to me.
I'd rather sit 4hrs in such a jet than in a middle seat of a 737 or 320.

The almost simultaneous switch away from CR2/E45 towards CR7/E70/E75 along with many express routes drying up has made express flying more comfortable over the last couple of years. I'd rather see a route go away than being maintained as long and thin a la BFL-IAH. Being in a CR2 to JAX or ERJ to MKE with is horrible. Much rather fly on a E120 or a Dash 8 where at least I can see what's down below.

UA E75 MSP-LAX 1536mi / 4:25hrs should be along the longest UA express flights
UA E45 ISN-IAH 1330mi / 3:30hrs is puppy hell of sorts
AA E75 MIA-FDF 1460mi / 3:53hrs is among AAs longest express flights

Quoting ua900 (Reply 48):
UA E75 MSP-LAX 1536mi / 4:25hrs should be along the longest UA express flights

For what it's worth, the UA E75 on STL-SFO blocks between 4:40 and 4:50 in the winter.
