UA Bringing Back Free Snacks

Wed Dec 09, 2015 4:23 pm

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...ew-signature-snacks-300190503.html

Starting in February 2016, United will be offering free snacks on flights within North and Latin America as well as HNL and GUM. Morning snack will be a caramel filled waffle, afternoon/evening snack will be an assortment of crackers, pretzels, etc.

Another positive trend for United!

I have always wondered why WN/DL as majors served snacks while AA and UA did not.

I think they should've had something on their HNL flights for a while now (EWR-HNL is at least 10 hours), but this is great news nonetheless. I hope AA follows soon.

Looks to me like this includes regional flights as well. If so, that is good news for all UA flyers.

Now if only AA will get their act together.

Is this for all flights? UA used to limit pretzels to flights more than 2 hours long. Also what about RJ flights - I see the poster above thinks it applies - yeah.

I take this as a sign of many good things to come during Munoz's time at UA, despite his very rocky start.

AA will no practically be forced to follow suit. US used to offer biscoff cookies in the morning and snack mix/peanuts/pretzels in the evening. US's cranberry nut mix was the bomb.

I don't understand why they took the free snacks away in the first place especially when DL/B6/AS/HA/WN continued to offer some type of free food in Y.

I hope that free meals on flights from the East Coast/Midwest to Hawaii will be next. I noticed UA has re-introduced free meal service in Y to Colombia and Ecuador, and has re-introduced midflight snacks on flights to Asia and India.

This mix is still around, just albeit now as a BoB item with an American logo slapped on it (there were obviously some slight modifications to the mix as nut prices changed but overall its mostly the same)

In reading the article again, it states that it applies entirely to all United Economy flights which is what all RJ flights are branded as so looks like the E145 and CRJs just got a little better.

I can't believe people really get so wound up about something so small. Drinks are one thing, and a good selection, including alcohol, certainly makes for a positive experience. I have to say I find it strange the traveling public, including frequent flyers perhaps, believe a complementary snack, as "insignificant" as offered on most carriers in Y, is something to really get excited about. I'm more concerned about what options are available inside the terminal for me to bring on the flight, and perhaps what Items I can purchase on the flight, and the quality of those items. I do not care wether or not I get a bag of processed peanuts or cookies to go with my diet coke...

I'm not sure if started with the major catering overall that UA did this summer, but on United's website it does mention that flights to China, Taiwan, and India have a limited selection of complementary snacks in addition to the snacks that UA has available for purchase on all their long hauls.

When we're paying hundreds or thousands to sit in that cramped uncomfortable seat (that every couple years seems to get more cramped and uncomfortable) in a small, loud metal (or carbon) tube that we can barely move about within for who knows how many hours, then every little bit to make things more pleasant counts. And an empty stomach is a quick way to empty satisfaction.

Same deal with J travelers and plastic or porcelain presentation. Every little bit counts when one's in that scenario.

This is a very nice move! Better than DL's Biscoff cookies. When flying in Europe it's always exciting for me to get a croissant or muffin for free in Y, now we get something similar in the US.

I agree that complimentary Y meals should be brought back to the 10hr East Coast - Hawaii flights. If UA is willing to do this and add free meals on more Latin American routes, they should certainly do this as well.

On an unrelated note, I have a feeling that the US3 desperately want to eliminate meal service to Europe but can't because of competition from foreign carriers.

I honestly don't get the reasoning for not providing free meals in Y to Hawaii, especially when a competitor (HA) does. DL will provide a free dinner and continental breakfast on a 5 hour flight to KEF when a competitor offers nothing, yet will charge for a meal on a 10 hour flight to HNL is bizarre. I'd love to hear the airline's reasoning for this.

I don't see people bringing up what I think is the biggest benefit of in-flight food of any type: between the service, eating, and clean-up, it takes a good chunk of time! Time that used to be devoted to eating has been devoted to sitting on a plane, bored, stewing about how lousy the flight is. When airlines ended meal service in the early 2000s, we were preconditioned to think that airline food was bad and we would not miss it. Now that it has been a solid decade-plus, anything is better than nothing. These European-style snacks should go over great and make people happy. I think it's a great move. Less time to do nothing on a plane, or drink and make yourself angrier.
Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive.

Dunno if animals are served coffee, especially soon to come Illy coffee. If so, hopefully with sugar and cream. Where have you seen coffee served in glassware?   That would be really hot, no?

UA and others do serve coffee in porcelain mugs or cups behind the curtain. If you don't want the extra spend of C or F you can always bring your own in Y and they'll gladly fill it with coffee. Just say it's your contribution to ecoSkies or that you don't like the plastic liner of the paper cup for health reasons

I think the main point is that it's nice to see some small touches to improve the airline experience, even if they seem trivial. It seemed trivial to take away peanuts in the first place too though.

In my own view, I'm glad to see some small perks come back to travel. After 9/11 the airlines were hit hard and were hemorrhaging money and/or going into bankruptcy. Fares were rock bottom to try and increase load factors and I think that a lot of people were willing to accept some cutbacks given the recession and the financial troubles of the airlines. Since the consolidation craze however, fares are up, benefits are down, and airlines still seem to cut services all the time despite making record profits. The status quo simply isn't acceptable when competitors (both at home and abroad) offer much better in flight experiences. Hopefully we will continue to see investments in the passenger experience that make flying with the US3 less of a drag.

I was joking about the glassware though. There was a thread a few weeks ago about pre-flight drinks being served in plastic rather than glass in F. I realise that for some users it is no laughing matter, so I apologise for making fun.

Exactly. A little goes a long way in service industries. For prospective passengers not in a loyalty program, a complimentary modest snack might make the difference between two apparently identical carriers.

Yep, a small step in the right direction. I think that all carriers should be mandated to provide a hot meal at least on transcon flights, even if it's paid and is required to be pre-booked. Similar to what AC does. Some countries (e.g. Russia) used to have such regulation, not sure they still do.

If I recall UA mergered with (destroyed) the last airline that offered free meals. Maybe this is a little bit of that past coming back.......even if it was forced by DL hand

Since the consolidation craze however, fares are up,

Fares are not up. They're just not.

That is great for UA! It is nice to see improvements in Y too.

If I recall UA mergered with (destroyed) the last airline that offered free meals. Maybe this is a little bit of that past coming back.......even if it was forced by DL hand

CO dumped free meals before the merger was even announced. Try again...
