FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is

possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times

in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS AT Macedonian Airlines (Greece)">IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds

if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not

standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

it was only a matter of time before AA brought back ORD-ORF. Midwest connectivity with AA was always through STL, I'm surprised it took this long after shutting the STL hub to start ORF.

CLT-MSN is an interesting add. MSN is so DL dominated, I was wondering if CLT would have been flown first from stronger AA markets like PIA and CID. Hope to see more CLT routes to the midwest!

I think this is a logical add, and I'm sure it will do well. It opens up a lot more options on AA for Madison travelers heading to Florida or the Caribbean. Before there really wasn't another option besides DL through ATL.

I think the biggest holes from Madison now are:
UA IAH-MSN
AA PHX-MSN
DL MCO-MSN (Sat only in the winter)

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

So was just looking for flights in March, Does anyone know what is up with AA's NYC-MIA Schedule? Was checking a few weekends in March to fly LGA-MIA and it looks like AA's schedule gets extremely light (1x from LGA, 2x from JFK, 2x from EWR), it looks like the pull down runs from March 7th - March 22nd, anyone know if this is a fluke or is AA really pulling that much capacity our around the Miami music week activities?

The future AA schedule is really messed up aa.com right now. It appears something went wrong with the load last night, or it didn't finish running in order to list the flights on the site. We are used to seeing strangeness Saturday PM/overnight during the load but this is normally fixed my Sunday morning. Not today. Numerous reports on FT of flights missing on aa.com in the future schedule.

Oddly, everything looks normal when I search on ExpertFlyer. I can see expected flights, see that they have inventory. But then some of them don't come up on aa.com

Give it a day and it should be back to normal I figure.

This has been an issue all day with the aa.com booking engine (and by extension other booking engines) and is not limited to NYC-MIA flights. For example, look at ORD-STL in March and you will only see 1-3 flights per day when there should be around 7. And ATL-MIA isn't coming up at all despite there being 7 flights loaded on EF. (These are just examples, the issue is more widespread).

Just checked on AA.com for 3/19/16 and all flights seem to operate as normal. Weekends may see 1 or 2 less freq. Maybe its just an error that has already been corrected.

I see the same as you when I check 3/19. But check 3/13 MIA-NYC and only 2 flights appear. 3/14 only 3 flights. 3/20 only 2 flights. This isn't the real schedule, of course, but rather an error of some sort. The issue, whatever it is, seems to not evenly impact every day on the schedule.

For this market it's particularly true. Amtrak downtown to downtown is less than 2 hours, so the attractiveness of flight is rather low for the local O&D marker.

AA LGA-YYZ APR 5>3 MAY 5>1.9 JUN 5>1.9 JUL 5>1.8 AUG 5>1.9

I think the LGA-YYZ drop is a mistake. There is no way they'd fly more LGA-YUL as it is a smaller market and AA isn't particularity strong at YUL anyways.

Mistake...

AA 5x daily 170/175 to YYZ on April schedules
AA 5x daily 145 to YUL on April schedules

If mistake where do the MCI slots come from?

Quoting FlyPNS1 (Reply 33):
For years, many insisted that US had to have all these flights to PHL because they were so important for connecting. I always believed they were just slot squatting because US has more slots than they could profitably use. I think the answer is known now.

I'm thinking of the song, You and Me Against the World. Yes, I railed against that to a chorus of criticism. I hoped the media would highlight and they would be shamed into changing it, but the market eventually fixed it. Although now, I'd argue the problem has shifted to purposefully flying to periphery markets with 50 seaters in order to block slots from LCCs.

Nice to see B6 add a 2nd BOS-MSY. Funny because we were just talking about it in a recent thread. I expect it to be seasonal, but it's a welcome add nonetheless. B6 overall is fairly stagnant in MSY. I'd like to see a FLL nonstop...but I don't know if they'd want to compete with NK and WN.
Spread hope like fire.

I am guessing one comes from the BNA reduction. Not sure if the BOS/DCA reductions are seasonal or permanent, but one of them could be funding the other MCI slot if those reduction extend further in future options. Alternatively, AA may be yet to pull a flight to account for the other slot.

AA BNA-LGA APR 5>4 MAY 5>4 JUN 5>4 JUL 5>4 AUG 5>4
AA BOS-LGA MAR 13>12
AA CAK-LGA MAR 1.0>0.7
AA DCA-LGA MAR 14>13

I'm not convinced that the two situations are all that similar. Especially with cheap fuel, I see a chance that most of the current 50-seater flying could make money. Not so with 25 daily PHL-LGA, even with free fuel.

This is only due to their merger with US and the tendency of UA to retract from markets to codeshare with AC. AC how has a few daily flights on YUL-EWR where they didn't have any a few years back. AC also codeshares with UA to ORD, LAX and SFO. If you'd count the passengers (e.g. the ones ticketed on UA) I'm sure UA would actually be quite a bit bigger than AA at YUL.

CLT-MSN is an interesting add. MSN is so DL dominated, I was wondering if CLT would have been flown first from stronger AA markets like PIA and CID. Hope to see more CLT routes to the midwest!

I think DL high fares out of MSN is starting to show. This with UA mainline additions, DL's dominance is weaning.

Quoting FSDan (Reply 4):
I think this is a logical add, and I'm sure it will do well. It opens up a lot more options on AA for Madison travelers heading to Florida or the Caribbean. Before there really wasn't another option besides DL through ATL.

I think the biggest holes from Madison now are:
UA IAH-MSN
AA PHX-MSN
DL MCO-MSN (Sat only in the winter)

Those are big holes. Though I would prefer more mainline. I would also like to see AA get the ERJs off of MSN-DFW. It baffles me that AA can't fill 3 CRJ-900s on this route or even put an A319 on it.

As someone who travels between PHX and MSN a fair amount, it would be a welcomed addition. AA can make PHX-DSM work on a 319 so they should be able to make MSN work.

I'd also love to see something to the west coast, but that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Actually, AA has been the largest US carrier at YUL for at least the last 20 years. UA did not serve Montreal at all until 2003, so they have always been weak there.

Totally inaccurate. The merger only grew AA's position as the largest U.S. airline to Montreal. AA is also the largest U.S. airline to Canada.

Codeshare passengers don't change that reality.

Arguing which US-based airline is largest at YUL or at transborder is meaningless considering the overwhelming plurality of capacity (seats, flights, ASM), if not the outright majority, is flown by star alliance.

I suspect that is just an Easter pulldown.

Looking at AA.com, the 5 LGA-YYZ's are back and LGA-MCI too. So, it would appear it was an error. The 5th LGA-YUL is gone, however.

Tying up slots with small cities on 50 seaters is better than hourly PHL flights, but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...

What "needs of the many" are you talking about? Some marginal reduction in fares to MCO and FLL?

AA is not the only one. Delta has had year-round mainline service to Montreal for a couple years now, a 717 to ATL.
