BA Short Of 767's?

Mon Dec 14, 2015 4:57 pm

Over the last 3 days 10-13 Dec BA have been using longhaul config aircraft on short haul routes.

http://www.thebasource.com/

The have been EDI,GLA,ARN,ATH,LCA,IST,FCO, I guess the Titan Airways 767 was not available.

Long haul B763s are pretty common in subbing for the short haul ones, it's when they do it the other way around that things kick off, ie DME or TLV.

We took G-BZHC down to JED last year, to be perfectly honest I think the club passengers were compensated along the lines of points, to be truthful down the back is probably better on these aircraft than on our longhaul fleet.
On the longhaul side, I've been up to ABZ in G-BNWN and WI up to EDI
It is a nice treat for anyone sitting up front but the cabin crew don't offer any avod or club service,
Incidentally the cabin crews who operate these flights are worldwide crews.

Well have they not changed most of the long haul route to 787's now? So, why not use these aircraft for shorter routes and increase capacity before retirement. Have them put there feet up, there main job is done.

Yeah, you will find this is the case, also they do tend to go tech regular, so sending them on shuttle routes etc is fine as we have the support at these stations.
Similar thing happened when the G-BUS Airbus were on their last legs..

Yes i noticed on Saturday when i was at LHR planespotting that the only Longhaul config 767 flights that were longhaul were the Speedbird 253 and the Speedbird 22B. The Speedbird 67V and the Speedbird 103 were being operated by B772 and B788 respectively.

The longhaul config B767s will go during 2016, with the shorthaul config B767s like you say during 2018.

Not generally. During the summer long haul crews were operating the Stockholm, Rome, and some Istanbul 767 flights (and they were on the shorthaul aircraft) but this was only for a couple of months. They are back to shorthaul crews, any other shorthaul flights on longhaul 767's are generally done by shorthaul crews. There may be some exceptions due to delays or scheduling issues though.

When attempting to reserve seats on a domestic flight operated by long haul equipment I'm only offered the first 13 rows with no seats available. Why?

What fare type are you paying, what is your Executive Club level, and how long is it before flight departure? Many BA fares don't permit seat selection (unless you pay a fee) until 24 hours before departure unless you're using a flexible fare or are Exec. Club Gold or Silver (7 days for Bronze).

If you're not eligible for advance seat selection when you check, assume you won't see any seats available.

That is the correct reason, it's the same on staff travel, it will only allocate you seats down the bottom end.

Which bears out the statement by 321neo that this is cover for routine scheduled heavy maintenance of the SH 763s.

There are 5 long-haul aircraft left and they're only flying two long-haul routes at the moment (BWI daily and NAS-GCM 5x weekly). That leaves plenty of slack to run regional sectors while the short-haul frames cycle through maintenance. Also WT was supposed to be retired this month but looks to have been extended a few weeks/months which also allows for additional regional runs to be made.

TCX69 posted in another thread that 2 shorthaul 767's are in Madrid for painting and that's why the longhaul 767's are scheduled to operate so frequently in December.
next flights : LHR-SOF BA, SOF-DOH-KAT QR, KAT-HKG KA, HKG-LHR VS, LHR-ATH-LHR BA, LHR-CDG-LHR AF, LHR-MAD-LHR IB/BA

G-BNWZ came back from CWL yesterday.

G-BZHA went LHR-CWL on Sunday and the crew returned with G-BNWZ. I was then on G-BNWZ on LHR-EDI on Sunday night, first service after coming back from CWL. Naturally, as you would expect straight after coming back from maintenance, we were 15 minutes delayed leaving due to a technical issue!

Bronze level, hand baggage only and two weeks until departure. Have never had issues until the last couple of weeks, where the long haul 767s have been operating UK and European flights.

No surprise there, NWZ is the Hangar Queen of the 767 fleet!

I'm flying to NAS return this May - it's showing as a 767 but any chances of the equipment being changed to a 787?

I hope it doesn't change - the BA 767 is a rare catch these days!

After BNWT goes in February, the final 4 long-haul 763s are due to remain in the fleet until July/August 2016.
Not coincidentally, two 789s are due in June and two in July, with another in August. Four of these obviously act, indirectly, as the replacements for the 763, via a fleet reshuffle. So unless Boeing suddenly deliver these 789s to BA two months early they won't be there to be used in May! There are other 788s and 789s in service already of course, and three more 789s are due in early 2016, but they're all allocated. I suppose if a 763 goes tech, and there happens to be a 787 sitting around at LHR, and the allocated crew are 787 qualified....

Significant business traffic. Lots of banks, insurance companies, and other often slightly shady offshore financial insitutions based in the Bahamas and Cayman Islands.

The longhaul ones are actually a pretty good ride in Y (not up front though). Seat pitch is quite decent and the IFE is just the same as most of the 772ERs and all the 744s. BA installed the 777 style interior so it doesn't feel that dated. Certainly better in Y than the 788.
