Lufthansa Ends KUL

Thu Dec 17, 2015 5:57 am

LH will end nonstop service to KUL on 1 March 2016. This comes 2 years after nonstop service was introduced, replacing the stop in BKK.

Could this have been a candidate for Jump?

This is bad news for 2 reasons. Losing Star carrier and A340.

Seems odd to me that LH couldn't pick up the slack from MH's withdrawal from FRA.
This route must have been poor for F & J demand and the ME3 presence.

Sort of validates MH's decision to pull out of FRA. To be honest I don't think Germany is top of mind when it comes to destinations to visit for Malaysians, and I suspect it's the same thing for Germans coming to Malaysia. I also can't think of German businesses which have significant presence here other than Mercedes-Benz, so can't say there's much business traffic for LH to cater to.

But here's the kicker - I think the ME3 effect is in play here. LH's fare ex-KUL really can't compete with EK's best fare.

From Q2 2016 MH will have pulled its own flights:

- FRA-KUL
- AMS-KUL
- CDG-KUL

But interestingly, MH has maintained its codeshare service AMS-KUL on KLM.

GDS data for June 2016:

- dep. AMS 20:45 - KUL 14:45 KL809 B777 daily
- dep. AMS 20:45 - KUL 14:45 MH5631 B777 daily

Hmm, I am booked on this flight in April.

Haven't heard from LH reservations as of yet, so wonder what will happen.

Oh man, have been a few times this year on this routing (March, July, November and comming up in two weeks). Was quite convenient with the direct flight to KUL and the A343 seemed always quite full (90-100%). In March the flight was even overbooked so five people were offered a flight the next day with a compensation (on guy booked on business was also offered a Y-seat).

So next time probably another stop will be necessary, either in BKK or SIN with the last leg operated bei either TG or MI. Does LH have an interline agreement with MI? I know some of their flight also operated with SQ-flight nummer or SQ-codeshare, but their "own" flights aren't even part of Star Alliance or are eligable for Miles and More.

So the shrinking of the LH Network continues, especially in Africa, Asia, Middle East. Less and less attractive to fly them. I guess the biggest threat to LH is the growth of TK. They fly from every German Airport and to KUL e.g. 11 times a week.

LH have pulled out of KUL before and returned shortly thereafter. Hopefully, it will do so again, when (and if) things improve. I do have a soft spot for LH, having flown them from the days when they operated B747-200 Combis on the FRA-DXB-KUL-MEL-SYD routing days, and will miss them around here.

Meanwhile, TK is going up to double daily on IST-KUL in the summer.

WOW...

If LH one of the most well known and efficient airlines in the world axes major cities in south east asia like CGK and now KUL that is a very bad sign for the future of european carriers...

This could also have to do with the new JV between LH and SQ.

It could then funnel pax via SIN instead.

KLM was intending to meet with MH to discuss the futore of the code-share. So it may be disbanded at some stage. What would EK think if the code-share were maintained ? How would MH price the seats ...it could hardly charge more than flying indirectly via DXB ?

I suspect LH is busy informing those passengers already booked. This can take time,

Don't you think that the new MH/EK link-up is a bigger threat to LH ? After all, via DXB a passenger flying from KUL with MH/EK can access more cities in Germany than he/she can when flying with SIA.

I'm not exactly shocked, but it's a disappointment to see such a mass withdrawal of Europe-Malaysia service. This will just leave LHR-KUL on BA and MH and AMS-KUL on KL. I have to agree with the above: the ME3 are really having an impact here.

The SQ/LH JV will cover flights between Germany/Switzerland and Singapore only, so no onward connections (at least for now). Besides, the JV is still pending regulatory approval and as no one else flies Germany/Switzerland-Singapore nonstop I don't know how easy it will be to gain that approval.

I don't find this to be surprising at all after they withdrew from CGK I thought it was a matter of time. There's not that much O&D between Malaysia and Germany and then there's EK, QR, EY, TK, SQ, TG, AI as alternative connections.

Jump is rather leisure oriented and at least for now KUL can't compare to Thailand or even Singapore in terms of German leisure traffic. As for Malaysian travelers, I have no clue whether JUMP is also designed to cater for leisure traffic to Germany/EU

I'm not sure that Jump is designed to cater to leisure traffic. I think it is more an attempt to obtain reduced costs on markets where there is less premium demand. There is a difference, because, even in the back of the bus, business passengers tend to buy from higher fare buckets than leisure. Just fewer of them on some routes will choose premium cabins. So by using a different configuration on their airplanes (more Y or even W, at the expense of less J and no F), the operating airline can actually make money.

That's a wee bit odd isn't it ? Unless KUL has very strong Auto-related traffic, what would be the rationale to make the route MUC-exclusive when it isn't viable out of FRA ?

Lufthansa's cost structure and ongoing labor conflicts have made it exceptionally challenging to serve lower-yielding markets in the ASEAN region.

Will SQ join the trans-Atlantic JV? After all, they have a daily JFK-FRA flight which until some years ago could be booked as a LH codeshare.

I don't know if that would even be legally possible, but regardless, I'd say with only one daily flight (two if you count DME-IAH, but again, I'm unsure whether that flight could legally be included in a JV) that is highly unlikely. Keep in mind LH/UA/AC didn't even let US join their JV, even though US had a significantly larger TATL presence then SQ does.

Plus the word on the street is (or at least was) that LH is not particularly happy about the SQ FRA-JFK flight. They not only pulled the codeshare, but made connections XXX-FRA-JFK harder, as the SQ FRA-JFK sector leaves relatively early. (Less flights that arrive FRA early enought to connect and IIRC also an increased MCT).
