OAG Changes 12/25/2015: Big UA, Drops LAX-DGO

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Looks to be an upgauge in equipment. I took a quick glance at a Monday in April and there is 5x 321, 1x 752, and 2x 320 scheduled. Only a handful of 190s. Probably freeing up the 190s for use on other routes like PHL-AUS.

Probably just a filing error, they actually bumped up the start date a month or two ago and from what I heard, the season finished up better than DE expected last year.

DE is still selling 2X weekly FRA-PVD but looks like the times of the Monday flight changed, so I would say this is a filing error of some kind.

You probably won't see the changes in the reservations system for a couple of days, that's why.

Reservations system already shows new flight times for the Monday flights.

Yes Enilria, these reports are obviously very useful for many reasons, that one included!!

The airlines have been hinting at some traffic weakness in the spring. I think the last few OAG threads have reflected it: *lots* of minor trims to frequencies..

yeah and that is ontop of ORD and IAD service as well....between UA and its JV partners they will have transatlantic service to EWR, JFK, IAD, ORD, YUL and YYZ this summer...not a bad network out of BRU.

What's the point of UA even flying LAX-SEA nonstop at this point, now that they're down to 1x day? UA should just drop the route.....

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

My guess was upgauge as well.

Delta isnt connecting anyone there its purely o&d and i think they can fill the planes, yields might be the challenge, if any being against WOW and iceland.

Iceland tourism is exploding from the US and Europe right now. Its become a hot place for younger travelers REK is a really cool scene and legendary nightlife. You have even seen the younger tourism companies like contiki and topdeck add Iceland since people keep asking them about it. Its very recently exploded in popularity, numbers are gonna jump soon i think Iceland is gonna have a huge summer in 2016. Iceland is hot

Bad omen. That could mean DL is having difficulty getting feed out of IND for Europe, which means that some of its other JFK hub traffic might also be hurting. JFK works as a third hub out of IND for transatlantic (MSP doesn't count), and DL needs to have all three of them available.

The total market from the entire USA to Iceland is 620 passengers per day in the year ended in OCT according to MIDT. That's up from 425 the prior year. Trouble is, there are 2060 seats per day to Iceland. So, you can do the math...

KEF is some ways like DXB and PTY. It is tough to compete with the local carrier because the high percentage of connecting traffic makes their operation so much larger than the local market.

True. Perhaps feed to int'l.

The remaining one daily is for connections to / from the LAX-MEL flight, all other places can be served via SFO, this is exactly the same way it went with PDX-LAX on UA, down to one Intl. connection flight, then soon after UA dropped it fully.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Copa doesn't serve UA (formerly CO) hubs directly as part of the old ownership/code share agreement. It may not have changed. Another reason I could see Copa bolting Star for oneworld or SkyTeam.

Well, if they are cutting capacity and COPA "can't" come in then I guess it's a pretty bad sign for the relationship. Personally, I think with the U.S. visa process getting worse and worse it gives great opportunity to "bypass hubs" like PTY.

On the other hand, Copa has added quite a few US destinations in the last few months, now directly carrying traffic that probably used to flow over IAH.

United sends the 753 to PTY usually. Could be the second frequency is upgauging from 738/739 equipment to 753.

Edit: just checked and both flights seem to have 738's as place holders. Yikes!! If that stays.

This is purely speculation on my part, but UA has increased codeshare flying witihin Brazil with Azul. Mostly available on connections via GRU. That may have taken a tiny bit of traffic off PTY-Brazil connections from IAH. They also are offering connections through LIM on LAN flights, which seems strange to me, as LAN is not a *Alliance carrier.
