Bula San Francisco! Fiji Airways to SFO
From the bays of our tropical islands to the Bay Area of San Francisco, we’re saying Bula with seasonal twice-weekly direct flights starting June 2016

Glad you are saying "Bula",...but who are you?

It this a UA flight? Air Fiji?

It is a rather cryptic post for an attempt to be informational.

Maybe a link to a press release at least would help to fill in the blanks.

Does Fiji do connections? I had never thought about it, but NAN is quite well place for connections AU/NZ to North America.

I can't find any official release related to NAN-SFO service commencing in June 2016. There doesn't appear to be anything on the FJ website.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

The last information I saw earlier this week the new 333 will be used for the AKL 3x week, LAX 2x week, and SYD 1x. I haven't seen where they are adding more flights to LAX, HKG will be going double daily 4x week and then the new SIN twice weekly service.

I did not see this one coming, it's some absolutely magnificent news! They tend to have outstanding prices to Oceania as well, often the lowest of other airlines, but having to stop via LAX. Hopefully they interline with VX at SFO!

(Hopefully, the "direct" is synonymous with Nonstop in this one, of course...)

Can't see it being anything but non-stop NAN-SFO.

It certainly is a great addition and hopefully it can lead to year round service.

Not sure how their connections work but they have quite a regional network in the Pacific. NAN (and to a certain extent SUV) are hubs for this part of the Pacific.

Yeah they have some decent connections.

Likely better suited to a stay in Fiji though and then connect onto another destination though, but it does add new options.

Yes they do, I might fly them SYD-NAN-LAX next year for the novelty factor but also because it's one of the few ways of getting across the Pacific in A330s all the way, i.e. the sweet 2-4-2 seating config

FJ definitely run connections, SYD-NAN-LAX is an important market for them. They also have an extensive partnership with AA on the US end.

They have frequently come up as the cheapest option for SFO-SYD, but doing so means 2 stops, including the horrors of an LAX connection.

I believe they have the best price for LAX-AKL, I know budget travelers originating in YYZ who have used them to AKL. Pretty good connection from LAX in NAN onto AKL

Their flights would generally come in cheaper to appeal to the connection market.

With so much non-stop capacity on SYD-LAX and now more competition on SYD-SFO, both markets would really only appeal to those wanting a stay in Fiji on the way or the low-yielding crowd.

MEL-NAN-LAX or MEL-NAN-SFO would likely offer far more of a competitive advantage given the comparative lack of non-stop options on the former and the completely unserved market on the latter.

I always wondered how Air Tahiti Nui does daily or double daily on PPT to LAX but Air Fiji was limited to twice weekly between NAN and LAX? Is there that big a difference in demand???

Is there any chance UA will launch any more Oceania routes? Maybe their own 2x weekly to NAN; or PPT? The 763 should do the job just fine.

Air Tahiti Nui also has their flights carry on to CDG.

As mentioned FJ is daily to LAX also.

But yes there is a big difference in demand. PDEW is almost 3x larger to PPT vs NAN from LAX.

Historically French Polynesia has long had travel/trade links to the US versus Fiji which has maintained its primary ties to Australia and New Zealand.

Certainly fact that Fiji is 12 hours away from California versus 7.5hr from Tahiti probably also matters.

UA operated to NAN until recently. They dropped route in 2011.

Previously CO also tried the route from West Coast.

You can do the same thing on HA as well from SYD to LAX, with a lay over in the Hawaiian Islands, I guess it's up to you on where you'd prefer to stop for a few days, or even a few hours, going through customs at HNL or LAX? I'd take HNL.

Wow! Nice addition to SFO.

Forgive my linguistic ignorance, but is "Bula" the
Fijian rough equiv. of "Aloha" in Hawaiian? Seems
to be only a greeting though, based on communications
I've had with Fijian hotels.

I'm wrong, but UA has never served any of the island nations

With how astronomically high Oceania fares tend to be, that low yielding crowd ready to take advantage of Fiji's deals is quite huge!

My guess is UA's Micronesia services may have gone through NAN with a 737-800.

No sir.

United itself operated both HNL-NAN and GUM-NAN which was suspended in September 2011.

CO/UA To End GUM/HNL-NAN 9/25 (by jonathanxxxx Apr 28 2011 in Civil Aviation)

Then further back as mentioned CO has had DC-10 service to both NAN and PPT from LAX.

Technically, Cathay747 is correct. The service was discontinued prior to the issuance of a single operating certificate following the merger of United/Continental which was on November 30, 2011.

Nonsense.

Yes United Airlines of Chicago served Fiji as mercure1 stated.

United Airlines was the marketing airline very much the public face of the operation. Planes were painted as United, tickets sold as United. Decisions on the route were made in Chicago by UA's network team, and the few employee in Fiji both at the city sales office and airport received their pay from a company called United Airlines in the US.

And who is Continental Airlines? A subsidiary of Chicago based United Continental Holdings formed in 2010.

Arguing over operating certs when owned by the same parent is even lamer argument than saying airline A does not serve city X since its operated by a regional partner.

This is great news for us that live in WLG.

It gives a great one stop option for flights to SFO - on top of the option to LAX - with a tropical sojourn on the way.

Otherwise it's via AKL or SYD.

FJ flies a couple of times weekly between WLG-NAN.

Good to see them extending their presence in the USA.

Wonder if Canadians will ever see their metal back in YVR.

Their next longer-haul destination I think will be PVG.
