FRA Passed 60 Million Pax In 2015

For the first time in its history Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport has handled more than 60 million passengers in one year. This milestone was hit on December 22, 2015. After inching slowly upwards for several years in a row this record would have been due last year had there not been the repeated industrial actions of LH crews leading to passengers diverting to other airports.
Congratulations for this achievement !

Will be interesting to see of IST overtakes FRA for #2 spot in Europe.

At Airport Council International congress last month they stated they believed IST would likely accomplish this as it was experiencing 9 percent growth in 2015.
IST was sitting at 56.8mil as of November. If growth rate is same in December should be about 62mil

Yes you are correct.

But IST passing CDG might be possible in a year or two as well. CDG growth rate is only about 3% and in 2014 they had 63.8million annual pax.

IST has already passed FRA some months ago calculated on a 12 month basis.

IST pax numbers for the last 12 months (Nov2014 - Nov 2015) stood at: 61,574,707 +9.7%

Paris CDG stood at: 65,935,487 +3.6% for the same 12 months.

I am in NYC and have just flown my 500th flight last week and hate to say, I transferred in FRA only once and never flown LH even though I am Star Gold with TK and my average flight is around 4 hrs in duration.

I am 2 of those!
I didn't think FRA seemed that busy, maybe it is the time I arrived - early morning, departed late evening with EY and the place wasn't busy.
Or it is the sign of an efficient and well managed facility that it can handle that many PAX without seeming crowded and busy!
Other airports on that trip seemed much more hectic, busy & crowded.. AUH, IST even MUN... SYD was Ok leaving but arrivals was a mess but that is nothing new!

The new runway has definitely been an enabler for this, even if it came at a high price (a ridiculously strict night curfew, and new runway for landings of small aircarft only)

Surely it is, but things will improve once T3 opens. Still, FRA lost a lot of its importance and it with the lack of major LH expansion it won't recover any time soon. After all, we mustn't forget how small a city Frankfurt is in comparison to LHR, CDG and IST which all have more than one large airport

Well, not the demise as I read it, but the growth is moderate compared to some competitors not too far away like IST and DWC. Without the LH-strikes, would the growth of FRA be comparable to CDG, LHR or AMS?

Well, that development is still quite far off I believe. I have not been at FRA this year so I am not really up to date when it comes to the latest developments. Maybe my idea of how far developed the plans and execution of T3 are is outdated?

But anyway, over 60 Million passenger movements is still an impressive number.

Being from Boston, I remember the days when one couldn't avoid FRA or LHR. Now we have so many non-stop options and even more connecting hubs that I can't even remember the last time I set foot in either FRA or LHR.

Well, the 2015 airport statistics support Der Spiegel's argument.

Here are the 2015 data, which are very indicative of the present growth trend for European hubs:

AUGUST 2015 - Movements - plus annual rate of growth:

1. AMS 43.559 +2.6%
2. CDG 43.452 +0.9%
3. FRA 42.787 -0.4%
4. LHR 41.783 +1%

November 2015 - last 12 months Passengers

1. LHR 74.9 Million +1%
2. CDG 65.9 Million +3.6%
3. FRA 60 Million +2.5%
4. AMS 58 Million +6%

The 2115 numbers are giving a wrong indication of the real growth rate. The FA strike in November alone cost at least 500K passengers, add the other strikes and we are talking about 750K at least

The finalo figure for 2015 will be around 61 Million and without strikes the growth rate would have been between 3,5 and 4%.

All in all, FRA is doing quite well and T3 will give an additional push. The numbers could be better without the passenger tax and that stupid curfew. The government requires to drive FRA with the handbrake pulled while IST is driven by rocket fuel for a Petrol engine.

Once LH settles the Dispute with the high paid Management staff things will further improve.

To be honest, part of Frankfurt airport is just the pits. It looks like a bus station. The LH A380/748 gates are very nice, but the rest of it is highly in need of renovation.

Fra suffers from the same issues other established airports are suffeeung. They are no clean sheet design. Demolishing T1 under use is not possible.

Still I like the airport. So international.

In FRs opinion there is something called "Frankfurt-Hahn"

But there is Egelsbach, which hosts a lot of business jets from time to time but of course it's a very small airport.

Frankfurt as a city itself is not very important for FRA but the whole Rhine-Main-area togehther with the Rhine-Neckar-region. There are about 7m people (and not the poorest ones) and lots of business like all the financial institutions in Frankfurt, SAP in Walldorf and BASF in Ludwigshafen. There was a thread recently about the most destinations from a single airport and FRA is well positioned in that list. I think that is mainly due to all the international businesses in the area.
I guess that all this keeps FRA in the O&D game for the forseeable future, but it seems that it's role as an international hub will decrease.

(BTW: same is true for MUC compared to Hamburg and Berlin. Far more people around HAM and Berlin, but less demand than in south germany around Munich)

Having said that, it is normal that FRA, while continuing to grow, will gradually fall behind other mega-hubs in the world, existing or under construction. Nevertheless, with T3 and the new runway, FRA has room for further growth (within government restrictions).
Also, the LH strike has cost FRA a significant number of pax this year; that effect needs to be accounted for.

That's true. But I guess that's way it is when your job is related to a special sort of projects. From 2006 to 2009 I almost saw one airport every four weeks (OTP). Later it was TIP for one year and after that CAI for one year. I guess scientists and musicians have a higher variety (Aircellist, what do you say?)

you can easily Google the Population of the City of London. In 2011 it was 7375 and it surely is not much more today.

FRA has a Population of 700.000+, the Main-Taunus County where I live has a quarter Million and border to FRA in the East. To the west is Wiesbaden with another 250.000, and so on. Including the Rhine Neckar area FRA Metro is about 6,5 Million People.

With the ICE Train Station the whole of western Europe is connected .

Funny you mention it. I am basically a commuter between Kelkheim and Hamburg and am therefore well aware of MTK demographics.
However, there's still a huge difference in population, O&D and economic strength between FRA and LHR, CDG and maybe even IST Metro Areas.

As a native English speaker I see no problem saying "FRA passed 60 million passengers". It's short for "...passed the mark of 60 million" or "passed a total of 60 million" etc etc.
