To start with, I thought he was wiping off the snow by hand.

Awesome video. When the trucks begin to approach, it looks like alien robots descending on some machine prey.

Hello all,

There was a time aircraft were deiced by people in open bucket truck deicers. Getting soaked with glycol on a freezing, windy night at ORD really sucked!!!

Great video!

Something about the winter conditions, the roar of the engines/wind, and of course, the scale of the aircraft - it all lends a menacing feel to the beast as it approaches.

Very cool.

"Cool" is the right word for it. Great video.

Too bad no colored fluid these days. I haven't seen colored liquid for quite some time.

Regards.

Winter is when Scandinavian airports excel. They're prepared for snow and can remain fully operational under these circumstances. This kind of weather in any airport futher south would probably mean cancellations and utter chaos.

Yes, OSL has invested in alot of equipment. However, delays can occur also here.

LHR would be in meltdown if it snows like that here.

And in Canada as in this video at YEG, where the temperature is often -20 or -30C (sometimes -40) in addition to the snow..

Coincidentally, DL posted a news item yesterday on their de-icing operations at MSP.
http://news.delta.com/decoding-delta-de-icing-operation

Excerpts:

Delta’s Minneapolis-St. Paul hub is one of the largest de-icing operations in the airline’s U.S. network, with a fleet of 28 vehicles and over 200 ramp agents.

Last year, MSP used nearly 900,000 gallons of de-icing and anti-icing fluid combined, with a total cost of approximately $5.5 million. The hub spent nearly double that amount in 2013 due to a harsh winter that extended through May.

Overall, Delta has 235 airport stations equipped to de-ice, and 195 of those are in the U.S.

cool video............Saw alot of scenes just like this at EWR last Winter. EWR has good facilities and equipment it just operates with zero slack so the extra time needed to deice means delays guaranteed.

At OSL they have 37 machines including atleast two of the largest snowblowers in the world and 325 people dealing with the snow.

This is old data back in 2003 JFK kept on hand:
1,000 tons of sand
800 tons of salt
105,000 gallons of liquid anti-icers
60 tons of solid deicers
85 pieces of snow removal equipment (6 high-speed multi-use units that can plow, sweep and blow snow, 29 heavy dump trucks, 17 snow blowers, 14 snow sweepers, 14 salt and sand spreaders, 5 liquid chemical spreaders)

JFK has a really cool drive thru building for the deicing, good for the environment since less gets wasted

Although they posted the article on MSP, I think Delta has more than 28 trucks at DTW. They have two 5-slot deice pads just for Delta, and a third exclusively for Delta Connection aircraft.

I think Delta's official Youtube channel posted a video featuring DTW deicing ops a couple of years ago.

I saw a couple of those single-operator deicing trucks a few weeks ago. I assume those trucks operate on sensors?

I'm not entirely sure what kind of systems they've got, all my experience is with the old-fashioned variety of deice truck. I know the contractor that deices DL Connection at DTW did a trial run with the single-operator trucks a couple of years ago but I haven't seen one since then.

I do know those types of trucks have a far more advanced computer system and so forth, but (as much as I'd like to) I haven't ever been able to get up close with one.

I saw them deicing DL mainline a few weeks ago at DTW, but did not see them this past week during that ice storm. It's kind of fascinating to watch, then again so is deicing in general.

That is interesting, I'll have to keep an eye out for them when I go do some planespotting in the next week or two.

As for deicing being fascinating to watch, I have to agree. Even after 3 years of doing it myself, I could sit and watch it and not get bored.
