Who Will Fly From Key West To Havana

Tue Dec 29, 2015 2:28 am

When scheduled air service starts from the USA to Cuba who will pick up flights from EYW-HAV. Cuba had a smaller
airline Aero Caribbean is that airline still in business.

I think Silver will be that airline. EYW is in a perfect place for them to have a Gulf Coast US to Cuba scissors hub.

While I agree if any airline it would be Silver, it surely will not be to connect the Gulf Coast to Cuba, in which there is virtually no demand and will continue to be virtually none for a long time.

The reality is nobody will likely connect EYW and Cuba for a while. Very little Cuba demand will exist outside of the obvious Miami, Tampa, New York, etc. for a long time.

Well obviously not a DXB-esque megahub, but 3x weekly EYW-HAV, and at most dailly service to the larger cities to not only satisfy connections, but also the EYW O&D. And on Saab 340s, not 737s.

What O&D? There isn't much of a market right now, and one suddenly isn't going to exist when scheduled travel begins.

Silver will be aggressive enough going into Cuba that it might apply for the route, but the market probably doesn't exist.

I'm skeptical of a huge increase in US-Cuba travel. In HAV specifically the hotels, which are already running at overcapacity, cannot handle such a large new tourist flow.

I am holding out hope for an RDU-VRA flight on JB or DL - lol

I know, I know. I just REALLY want to get to Varadero sooner rather than later. It looks like a spectacular place!

O&D from the continental US to EYW, and the connection possibilities of CONUS-EYW-Cuba.

Silver will no doubt apply to fly from FLL and TPA, no need for EYW. Both are well in range of the Saabs and shorter than routes Silver operate/has operated in the past (eg FLL-TLH). I don't see any Cuban service from EYW anytime soon.

And why would that be served from EYW and not MIA/FLL/TPA?

What CONUS EPW connections? A handful of weight restricted flights?

Take a gander at EPW's runway. it severally limits how far you can fly. It is not a suitable airport for a hub of any kind. Especially with FLL and TPA both well within a Saabs range from Cuba.

Good one!

Pan Am only served Key West - Havana for about a year, shifting it to Miami in 1929. National considered EYW-MIA in the late 1940s but to my knowledge never started service.

But Cuban carrier Aerovias Q flew the route with DC-3s from 1950 to about 1960 when they went bankrupt. Check out the great looking timetables!

I would think someone like Cape Air would be more realistic than anyone else.

there has been a few charter flights using a Piper Navajo but I'm not sure they have been highly successful because the Cuban community in the Keys is a shrinking one (well, until a bunch wash up on shore).

My hometown airport TXL has direct AB flights to VRA and AB is part of oneWorld, and I understand RDU recently saw a oneWorld carrier expand there

Little to no O&D and EYW isn't set up in any way to handle connecting passengers. It would be an absolute nightmare in that little holding room that they have.

New developments will take care of that   And those developments will increase traffic even during the time they take place. Engineers and managers will have to go back and forth.

EYW will not see Cuba service for a while. The agreement recently signed is still very restrictive on number of flights therefore the DOT will designate airlines with city pairs that demonstrate the highest and best use which means using high volume aircraft on the limited routes.

Key West does not seem like a good candidate for air service to Cuba, but it would be in an ideal position to offer ferry service to Havana.

I think the ferry will happen sooner than air service as well. I have family in the Keys, head down there a couple times a year. I'd love to be able to do a day trip to Havana before it loses all the decay from the Castro years.

Hi-speed ferry boats have replaced air service in many places; Long Beach to Catalina Island for example. The economics are simply better.

This would have been cool - the auto ferry from Key West to Havana in the 1950s.

EYW to Cuba would be a complete waste.

You'll likely see AA/WN/B6 out of MIA/FLL. Possibly someone out of TPA/MCO. A few flights from the NYC area airports (locals & connecting pax from Europe) and maybe a flight from other hubs such as ATL/ORD/DFW.

Weekend cruises would probably be a good money making enterprise initially. Especially, as long as the dearth of hotels exists.

As far as I can tell there was no EYW-HAV service when scheduled air service ended in the early '60s.

As far as I can tell Pan American from 1928-1929 and Cuban airline Aerovias Q were the only carriers to operate EYW-MIA.

This brief history of Aerovias Q says international flights ended with the January 1, 1959 Cuban revolution.

Why would there be flights from Key West to Havana? Wouldn't this be a waste of a frequency? It's looking like the same justification to have Daily MSP-OSL or ORD-ATH service.

At a max of 36 seats they stand a better chance of New orleans, Pensacola, eat with full loads than a A319/A320 on smaller city pairs. Fewer seats can change O & D needs on the routes.

Maybe you but really there is no catchment area with the Key's. I do not see enough catchment.
Practically 100 miles of 2 lane A1A clogged with traffic from the mainland to Key Largo and on down to Key West is close to a 3 hour road trip.

I spent over a week down in the Key's a few years back. The cost of living is high and the business people I spoke with indicated it was hard to hire employee's due to the travel time required because the employees could not afford to live in the Key's.
That would indicate not much expendable income for the catchment area.

I just do not see how financially it would work.

A recent google map image still shows this AN-24 sitting on the west side of the airport. How about an upstart flying AN-24s between Cuba and EYW?   Now that would be cool!

I have two friends who have already flown to Cuba via GA (one, in a Bonanza, another, a Mooney), and have been well-received. I'm looking forward to visiting via V-tail some day sooner than later.

I flew AeroCaribbean & AeroGaviota last June both on ATRs. The service is extremely basic, but ok for a short sub 1hr flight. I could see them being up for EYW (not sure why they would of course). I certainly don't see a U.S. carrier being interested in such a route.
