More Illinois Travelers Using MKE

"The percentage of northern Illinois residents using Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport has increased since the Great Recession of 2008, a study commissioned by the airport shows, as efforts to attract new passengers and air service to the facility continue.

Attracting new nonstop air service is possible, but unless there are people to fill airplane seats, it's not likely, said Robert Mann, president of R.W. Mann & Co., a New York airline consultancy.

Among other airlines, "Spirit is out there with a big fleet plan — lots of new airplanes coming — and needs to find a place to put them," Mann said. "One would think they might be an option."

In term of any new airlines coming to MKE, I'd say its pretty slim pickings. B6 and VX don’t even combine for 10 departures/day at ORD, and there’s really no precedent for either of them serving MKE.

IMO Rockford and Southern Wisconsin are better off, but this latter lacks a terminal and Rockford is neglected if i can say. MKE is a toll ride anyways, but if still easier and cheaper than ORD it remains the most accessible in the greater Chicago area.

Now that the runway extension/relocation at GYY is complete will we ever see some real action there? MKE, RFD and GYY should become Chicagoland's 3rd 4th and 5th airports IMHO, and Peotone should remain a pipedream.

Great that's all MKE needs is more FIBs clogging up I-94 and I-43.

Maybe BA can justify a 788 flight to MKE to compliment ORD?

Maybe LH can fly the A380 to MKE since ORD isn't ready for it. :P

Maybe in 5-10 years, assuming MKE really does a good job at luring in the N and NW suburbs of Chicago. Otherwise, not a chance.

I could possibly see NK moving up I94 from ORD if their plans get much more ambitious and the City of Chicago doesn't want to give them anything. Unlikely, but possible

A lot of people in the northern Chicagoland suburbs such as Highland Park, Lake Forest, Waukegan, etc. use MKE. Many times flying MKE--ORD-XYZ is (a lot) cheaper than flying ORD-XYZ. In fact, last summer, I used to fly out of/into MKE quite a number of times as flying MKE-ORD-SFO/SJC on AA was not just cheaper but hundreds cheaper than flying ORD-SFO/SJC with the ORD-SFO/SJC leg being the same flights!

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the new baggage claim is far more inefficient than it was previously? It takes way longer to get your bag now.

So with travelers shifting to MKE and ORD expanding, where does that leave Peotone?

Secondary airports have fallen out of favor with WN and the ULCC. If NK can't grow ORD, they'll likely look at other major markets first before slapping the I-Pass on the windshield and heading for MKE.

In the case of WN, I don't know if this is a hard and fast rule. While they've expanded into markets such as DCA and LGA, their Bay Area operation still is bigger at OAK and SJC vs SFO. And of course, at Dallas, they're firmly ensconced at DAL.

Point taken. But where there is room for growth at the primary airport in the market, one can certainly make the case. Ask A.netters in CAK, MHT, and PVD for example.

I see MKE as a destination for Condor and Norwegian for example, but for northern IL. US domestic traffic, as i said above, other smaller terrains would be a better option.

If the state of WI ever allows the Amtrak to get upgraded then MKE will certainly see a lot more growth from Chicagoland.

I had a number of friends who lived in the far northern suburbs, working for companies like Abbott Labs and Walgreen's. They used to fly Midwest Express, because the drive to and from Milwaukee was often much, much easier than the drive to ORD, especially during rush hours and Mondays and Fridays.

Except they would be driving in the opposite directions from other Illinois residents. On a Friday afternoon or evening, arrivals at MKE would be driving south, while I-94 north is jammed with Illinoisans going to Door County or Green Lake.

It would be vice versa on late Sundays and Monday mornings.

I would gladly fly from MKE if it were actually any cheaper than flying from ORD. Fares are almost always higher and MKE has very few destinations.

To save how many minutes would bring that much more traffic? Um no. Even if it saved 30 minutes a trip that wouldn't bring more traffic.

Only way "a lot more growth" would happen is if Metra could somehow be expanded from Kenosha-Milwaukee.
