Quoting jfklganyc (Thread starter): Anyone else see that new billboard at the entrance to the airport? |
Quoting jfklganyc (Thread starter): How far the airline from Atlanta has come in NYC |
Quoting jfklganyc (Thread starter): "Welcome To JFK. Our Gateway* To The World" -DL |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 4): The "gateway" that has exactly ONE flight to all of East Asia. |
Quoting braniff2hav (Reply 5): "The airline from Monroe, Louisiana." really.... |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 4): The "gateway" that has exactly ONE flight to all of East Asia. |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 13): The pompous statements from DL keep rolling on. |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 13): But their gateway is small in comparison |
Quoting FSDan (Reply 8): DL has flights from JFK to over 50 destinations outside the U.S. I'd say it's fair to call that a "gateway". |
Quoting FSDan (Reply 8): f you want to be really pedantic, you could say that no U.S. airline has a true "world gateway" since there are no hubs that have flights to all populated continents on their own metal (let's exclude partner airlines since you didn't include KE, MU, CI, and CZ from JFK). |

Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 13): The pompous statements from DL keep rolling on. Although on one hand it's true, since for DL it's their gateway. But their gateway is small in comparison, so it's worth a chuckle. |

If DL's JFK hub can't be considered a gateway to the world because there is only one flight to East Asia on DL metal, UA's EWR hub certainly can't be either since there are exactly 0 flights to all of Africa... |

Quoting viscount724 (Reply 17): Quoting FSDan (Reply 8):DL has flights from JFK to over 50 destinations outside the U.S. I'd say it's fair to call that a "gateway". At Pan Am's peak around 1980 they only had 10 nonstop international destinations from JFK, and another 25 with at least one and often several stops on through flights (same flight number). And many destinations only had direct service 2 or 3 days a week. |

But their gateway is small in comparison, so it's worth a chuckle. In comparison to what? DL isn't even comparing it to anyone else.............the statement couldn't be any more obvious "OUR gateway to the world" (emphasis, mine). Amazing how people read stuff into something that aren't there. |
Quoting B727FA (Reply 22): Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 13):The pompous statements from DL keep rolling on. You must have been napping...it took you until Reply 13 to get that in. |
Quoting tlecam (Reply 27): Is JFK as a world gateway a statement of fact about the current state? |
Quoting PGNCS (Reply 25): Come on mayor: you can't pretend you actually thought this would be a reasoned, dispassionate discussion of a piece of marketing, did you? |
Quoting Osubuckeyes (Reply 26): 25 posts in about a DL billboard with no actual picture of the billboard. |
Quoting LAX772LR (Reply 14): You say that as though many other airlines/airports haven't referenced their gateways in similar fashion.... |
Quoting mayor (Reply 16): It says "Our Gateway to the World", which it is..........the sign doesn't say THE Gateway to the World. |
Quoting LAX772LR (Reply 14): to ____? |
Quoting mayor (Reply 23): In comparison to what? |
Quoting Aeroflot777 (Reply 24): Compared to? |
Quoting mayor (Reply 23): As has been mentioned before, this isn't the first time that ANY carrier hasn't done something like this and yet, DL is "pompous" for doing it. |
Quoting PGNCS (Reply 25): You get that it's marketing, right? |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 33): Considering the size of the gateway, it's a pompous statement. It perfectly fits their culture though. I'll give them that. |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 33): No, I say it as though airlines usually don't make that reference unless it's widely respected as such. |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 33): Seriously? Do I really need to make a list? |
Quoting jetlanta (Reply 37): How many cities on each continent must an airline serve in order for a hub to qualify as a "gateway to the world"? It seems that there must be a UN-sanctioned number or something. Is it 1? 5? 15? Maybe 100? Good grief. JFK is clearly Delta's gateway to the world. Delta is allowed to define the role of its hubs in its own network. No one else gets a say. |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 38): Other than having JFK-LHR, is the international network of DL JFK any more flagship than DL ATL ? |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 38): The keyword is "OUR", which confers flagship status. |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 38): The keyword is "OUR", which confers flagship status. |
Quoting mayor (Reply 41): Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 38): The keyword is "OUR", which confers flagship status. By whose definition? Seems to me that "OUR" means that, amongst all of the cities that DL flies int'l from, JFK is the number 1 network. I don't know any other way to define it as the statement is so simple, it's difficult to make it any more complicated, but, lord knows, some on here have tried. |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 43): Quoting mayor (Reply 41): It's not #1 even within the DL network - that's ATL, and the margin isn't even close. But yes, don't let me ruin your koolaid parade. |

Quoting questions (Reply 45): It's 2016. Do billboards drive any measureable brand recognition, consumer behavior or increase in revenue? |
Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 11): but for DL JFK to claim such a distinction is stretching it. |
Quoting MSPNWA (Reply 13): The pompous statements from DL keep rolling on. Although on one hand it's true, since for DL it's their gateway. But their gateway is small in comparison, so it's worth a chuckle. |

Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 38): If your definition is any hub that has international service, then why not call SLC that as well ? The keyword is "OUR", which confers flagship status. Other than having JFK-LHR, is the international network of DL JFK any more flagship than DL ATL ? The old PM-NW could make such a claim about DTW because to them, DTW was indeed singular. |
