MH Not Carrying Bags On Flights To EU

Tue Jan 05, 2016 8:50 am

http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/au/e...limitation_checked_in_baggage.html

They claim due to headwinds bags can't be carried on flights between KL and Europe.

Amazing. Not to plan a fuel stop but simply announce you don't carry baggage. I wonder if those lower holds are really empty or full of other high-value cargo.
I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

Better believe it, but there is a bit more to it. On the previous routing via Iran & Turkey with a full pax load a useful payload of around 8 tonnes was left for cargo. The more southern reroute via Saudia Arabia only further increases the fuel uplift. It's sad & excruciating to see AMS & CDG coming to an end this way

With the competition maintaining much more fuel favourable routes MH needs to do some serious evaluating. At this rate i doubt even an A350 will make sense in 2017

So you arrive at check in at KUL, and do what with your hold luggage?

Hardly doing the airline any favours when they are trying to pick themselves up...

Be Malaysian and travel to Europe: arrive in AMS/CDG/LHR and find that you have no winter clothing (or a rain coat!).... Oh your clothing arrives in 2 days: have fun....

This is madness....

I 100% agree, this is just MH kicking themselves while laying on the ground injured. I can't imagine too many people travel a distance like this w/o any baggage at all, so the only option is carry on? Great people trying to stuff their Rimowa hard case in the overhead, hope they have the super-duper-massive sized bins .....

I guess the only other options are every other carrier that serves K.L. & Europe or shipping your bags with a baggage delivery service, I'm sure it's more than regular baggage fees. It seems more increasingly, that airlines do not wish to allow you to take personal possessions with you on a trip any longer.

So why not make a fuel stop along the way instead and take full cargo load?
As a passenger, I rather take an extra hour flight time than having the hassle with luggage arriving later.

As far as I know, nobody is forcing them to use this flight path. One wonders why MH still bothers with AMS and CDG and not just closes right now and rebook through LHR, which is hardly fully booked. One also wonders how long LHR can be sustained in this way with daily delays because of unfavorable routings.

LHR has almost never been profitable, especially with 2x daily A380s. But it's their flagship route and they'll never let it go.

As i mentioned in another thread it's a very sensitive issue, almost fearfully treated, which has much to do with the fact that MH is going out of it's way to avoid even the slightest perception that it's operating anywhere near areas of any conflict.

While that is understandable to some degree it's a fact that many other reputable carriers continue to use Afghan, Iranian & Turkish airspace to this day. For MH with the added flight time & fuel costs it's like going into a fistfight with both hands tied behind it's back.

It's made for an uneasy subject which for now excludes a return to more favourable & competitive routings. Of course with the impending B777 retirement & LHR status being unquestionable there is little motivation for anyone to look at this from a more business orientated perspective. Now they're finding themselves having gone overboard & the costumer base pays for it.

MH got bashed for using the optimal route which overflew a conflict area and getting shot down back then. Now, with the Middle East hotting up, they're getting bashed for having to delay passenger luggage because the route they're taking, which avoids all conflict area is now beyond the A380/B777's endurance with a full load on the account of headwinds. They just can't catch a break...

As for a fuel stop - I would think that FTL issues meant that they'd have to spare crews to take over at the tech stop & they're now shorthanded? I recall seeing a crew change on the KUL-NRT-LAX route so I would think it'll be the same here.

I really, really doubt those running MH wants to be in this situation right now.

It looks like this Travel Advisory has been updated in the meantime:

"Normal baggage allowance on Malaysia Airlines’ flights to London, operated by the A380 aircraft, has been restored with immediate effect. Baggage limitations however, still apply for flights to Amsterdam and Paris on 5-6 January 2016."

I just checked some recent flight paths of those 3 routes .... Basically MH is flying some 1100mi ground distance longer than the great circle, which is likely much worse when measured in ESAD.

There seems to be a certain uneasiness, perhaps even fear, to openly say ''Look at what our competitors are doing'' who are to this day using the Afghan, Iranian & Turkish airspace. MH is placing itself in this situation & burdening itself further. If you intend to hurt yourself you will not catch a break either... and in that light the retreat from Europe (save LHR) is becoming the self fulfilling prophecy. Doing business is one thing, setting yourself back further is quite another.

Quoting theginge (Reply 14):

A crew change would certainly be needed. Shorthanded might be the case too, quite some pilots have already left the company for the middle east.

I'd rather ask myself if those running MH are wanting to run it like a business or are running it until Christopher Mueller has solved all their problems for them. It's pennies saved on one side while more money is being thrown out on the other side. I'd have to say you (as a Malaysian) don't seem very bothered.

They did try going this way during MH17 and was mercilessly bashed by Malaysians, especially Opposition politicians. In fact I can still remember some of the quotes on other forums, about how "they sacrificed lives to safe fuel". I doubt MH's upper brass want a repeat of that again.

I certainly remember that but it now seems things have been taken to the extreme. It's a good thing the general public has no clue on how much extra fuel MH has needed to take on since the start of avoiding Afghan airspace & the further diversions since. Fortunately for the upper brass that won't be a concern much longer. In case of any questions I suppose for LHR the A380 can be called the gas guzzler (much like the B747 & B777 before it) until the A350 comes in

Still sad to see the company in this state

not across the Black Sea and Turkey.   Most are fired from aircraft over Syria, some from ships in the Mediterranean, and a few low flying cruise missiles from Russia across Iran and Iraq.
And they are air to ground or ground to ground-missiles - not designed to shoot down an airplane.

Once one of the few airlines that actually flew to all continents has now pulled out of Africa, The Americas, and only LHR soon to be the only European destination!!!!

Sooooo sad for this once mighty airline!

So instead of blocking off rows and allowing those flying to take the normal entitlement at a cost of ticket sales to the airline, MH still can sell the same number of $eat$ but at the expense of convenience to the pax?

Sounds like a cheap and tacky move to me.

Maybe this is the first step in becoming a LCC while blaming it on prevailing headwinds? Next thing you'll know is the lack of catering, removal of IFE, etc, while having to pay for it all.

Perhaps they didn't want to do so because a majority of the affected passengers are on their return trip back home to Europe & would rather arrive home on time than being stranded in KUL? If given the choice I'd rather have that option as well. Also, could be that since SQ/EK/BA/TG are full out of SE Asia, they're unable to transfer some of the pax to other airlines to lighten the load.

Besides, if you look at Flightradar records, the flights from the 31st - 4th flew the same route with no restrictions, so it's clear that the changing weather's wreaking havoc on their operations. And they're the only ones flying that particular route non-stop from South East Asia.

Perhaps they didn't want to do so because a majority of the affected passengers are on their return trip back home

So nice that they have the option to leave all their shopping behind in the hope that it will turn up one day!

But it's their flagship route and they'll never let it go.

They'll have to let the A 380 go and not the route. They probably need to switch to a more efficient twin jet like 350 or 787.

Quoting Asiaflyer (Reply 8):
So why not make a fuel stop along the way instead and take full cargo load?

Yep,multiple airports on the route for a fuel stop - DXB/AUH/DOH/DEL/BOM/IST. Does anybody know which among these airports has the cheapest fuel + landing & other fees + on the route with least diversion required?

Quoting TheFlyingDisk (Reply 13):
As for a fuel stop - I would think that FTL issues meant that they'd have to spare crews to take over at the tech stop & they're now shorthanded? I recall seeing a crew change on the KUL-NRT-LAX route so I would think it'll be the same here.

I really, really doubt those running MH wants to be in this situation right now.

Isn't a fuel stop (along with relief crews) better than being left with not having passengers to fly? I guess SQ, CX, ME3 will have a field day and take over the few remaining passengers MH has been ferrying so far. The worst thing you can do to lang haul passengers is denying them their checked baggage!

This is not MH's fault; it's all Mother Nature's fault.

The extra strong headwinds are to blame.

If MH were really keen to not inconvenience their pax they do have 2 A380s currently on annual leave that they could recall and temporarily put on the route... nah...
