I'll wager it has snowed on QANTAS at least once at JFK

QF also operates a regular schedule SYD-ZQN, which is a major ski centre in winter. But point taken.

Off topic, but here's a spectacular RNP approach into ZQN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mxmFCw-Dig

Not to mention Christchurch or Auckland every 50 years

I can remember pretty heavy snow in Wellington more than once and the airport is always one to pay attention at due to its short field length, water at both ends of the runway and notoriously windy condition. In the winter when the wind stops we used to get a couple of weeks of thick fog.

Queenstown has some quirks that make it potentially dangerous too, mountain in the way of a single engine climb out or something, plus lack of runway lights.

Perhaps not, but I always included it in my FICON. A quick call to the tower usually gets a report. If the van ride was interesting, I know I'd be asking before I started taxi.

I wonder what the airport was doing about the conditions?

I wonder if GEG Airport Ops had done any runway testing, like a Tapley meter or something, in advance.

I wonder if they were taxiing on a single engine. Asymmetrical thrust might explain the issue with turning on ice.
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

Single-engine taxi with ice/snow contaminated surfaces would be poor airmanship for exactly those reasons.

Not trying to cast aspersions on the crew here, just asking to eliminate a possibility. As it was a 6am departure, maybe they were the first a/c out and had no idea of what they were going to encounter. I don't always think that far ahead at 0600 dark and I'd hate to think they were on an "illegal overnight", to boot.

Most Aussies have never even seen snow, never mind actually touching it or living through a Winter of it. I went crazy with joy at my first experience when living in the UK, at the age of 22 lol!

To our northern hemisphere aviation friends from the south, you have my respect for dealing with the stuff safely year after year!
