Emirates will restart its second daily LAX rotation. Effective 01JUL, the airline will operate a second A380 on the DXB LAX route with the following schedule:
EK217 DXB LAX 1500 2000 - daily A380
EK218 LAX DXB 2230 0130+2 - daily A380
The aircraft will be sourced from the IAH route, which will be downgauged from the same date.

Great. So comments by the local sales office that 2nd flight would be back in 2016 were true.
Interesting they changed the timings a bit.
Last time around with the double flights they had DXB departures were at 0315 and 0820. Now it will be 0855 and 1500 banks.

LAX double daily A380 will do fine for EK. They will aggressively target Africa + Iran bound traffic (along with the usual ISC-GCC routes) with the added capacity to hurt LH/AF.
Do note that EK carries a fair bit of pax from Nigeria to USA via DXB as the locals here in LOS/ABV do not mind the insane back tracking as the fares are very competitive especially in peak season and after God himself, Nigerians trust BA and EK only !

The downgrade at IAH is not good news. That's a loooooong flight in the 77W's vastly inferior biz seat. Looks like I'll be finding another way to DXB!

Has EK dropped any hints as to when they will introduce, a modernized, upgraded J cabin?

Previously, EK didn't have the competition of QR, EY, TK when they had two daily rotations with a 77L & 77W. Now, they will increase the demand, with doubt the capacity along with QR's 77L, EY's 77L, and TK's 77W (are they going double daily also? ) as well as the long standing service from BA x1 A380, 77W/A380; LH x2 748 (FRA), A346 MUC); AF A380; LX's upgauge to a 77W and KL's 744.
Hopefully, we will see the fares come down markedly.

On 'sophisticated' (referring to customers) supply heavy routes, once you expose customers to the A380, they don't respond well to the 777 layout, even if it means the choice of an additional frequency. The result are non-A380 inducements / discounts, as we saw on LGW.
On demand heavy routes, EK can 'get away' with an inferior product, especially on two leg trips, providing one leg is on the A380, and the price reflects the non-A380.
Will the EK A380 standard for Y and J become THE standard for the fleet? If it doesn't, will the A380 become more like the 777 offering? Or will there continue to be two quite different standards?

Cost control and preminum seats. About 10 flight on a 777 cost the same as 7 A380 flights. Recall the 77W must block out a small number of seats flying LAX to DXB. For the same cost, 22% more F seats, 33% more business, but 10% fewer coach. However, due to seat blocking on the 777, about the same usable
Put another way, 2X per day A380 barely costs more than 3X 77W. For that 16% more F, 26% more J, and about 10% less Y. That bar sells J.

On sectors of that length, plus the fact that passengers are likely transferring onto another flight, frequency becomes less and less an issue.

Isn't LH A380 and 748 in summer?
AF is daily A380 and 777 and 3x weekly 777

Well, lets see!! they already are down-gauging DFW after they did it before with IAH, meantime they are adding capacities to other stations in Europe & Asia; EK is a very dynamic airline; looks like they keep shifting capacities between stations & study real-life market demand patterns; take their flights to Moscow for example as it seems to be off-again/on-again A380 flights

It's great to see so many options from LAX to the ME region. A real testament to the economic strength and cultural diversity found across Southern California. It seemed not long ago that LAX lacked many non-stops to the Middle East, IIRC MS flew to CAI and LY to TLV (via YYZ). Were there any others before this recent onslaught?

Wonder how the EK 380 is doing at SFO... And EY for that matter. EY will have a slight capacity decrease as it moves from a 9W 77W to a proper EY 77L. Will be interesting to see if EK goes double daily here to stave off the immenet arrival of QR... Amazing those ME3!

yes primarily due to extensive beyond code share/interline agreement with Virgin America (VX) plus a lot of military/defense company HDQ in SFO/SJC area who have deals in Iraq/Afghanistan/Saudi and use EK/FZ via DXB for their travel purposes. I anticipate SFO to become double daily too hopefully by W16.

Not really. Quite a few carriers offer multiple A380s into here. Nothing all that significant about 2xD at all.

And yet, LH upgauged a flight from 747 to A380, AF constantly subs the 77W in for the typical 77E on their 2nd flight, and BA's maintaining a typical winter sched.... so they can't all be doing that bad.
KL's been rather stagnant in the market, but they seem to get on well based on cargo, so there's that.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil
