JetBlue Inaugurates DAB

Thu Jan 07, 2016 1:05 am

Tomorrow (January 7th, 2015), JetBlue will begin flying to Daytona Beach, FL from JFK. From the looks of it, there are about 25 seats open on the flight however inaugurals are always full of press and airline/city personnel. I'll be onboard and can't wait to see the festivities in action!

The aircraft set to operate the flight is N661JB. The flight is set to leave JFK from gate 16 at 8:59AM local and arrive in Daytona at 11:55AM local.

As an Embry Riddle student from Long Island I am extremely excited to see my favorite airline connecting my two bases of operation. That, and it's something new to look at while I'm flying my little Cessnas in and out of KDAB!

It'll definitely be a great thing to look up from campus and not see a junky MD80 or scrawny CRJ taking off

I waited years and years for this to happen. I finally leave DAB and ERAU last year, and now it's a reality. Typical

Nevertheless, very glad to see it finally come to fruition. I hope the locals support the service and keep B6 in town - the airport needs it, and frankly so does the area as a whole. Now, let's get some ORD-DAB service back...

Haha see it's the exact opposite for me! They announced the service two weeks after I committed to ERAU so it's starting just as I need it!

I agree. Even if it goes to an E-190 I just want the direct flight to stick around. Like panam330 said, the airport and the area need a little stimulation.

I don't think the flight was warranted due solely to the business case / route forecast. Sometimes, it's not just about that when a route is launched. I think DAB is one of those instances where there were other factors in play which helped make it a reality. Still, I do hope it does well and is successful!

I will be there trying to catch it arriving and departing, I am hoping they use 25R as I will be watching from the Embry-Riddle campus.

I wish B6 the best of luck on this route. It is nice to finally have a direct flight to NYC instead of having to go through ATL or CLT.

While I was at Riddle, we only had ATL after CO quit EWR. Consider yourself lucky to actually have a choice between ATL and CLT.

I did a brief search on here but of course, couldn't find anything.
Someone else can jump in and clarify or correct, if necessary. I remember jetBlue announcing Daytona Beach on the same day that Dave Barger stepped down as CEO. It is a route that Barger had been looking at doing for years and I'm not sure if it was a business relationship he was chasing or if he has personal ties to the area.

Flight 393 is in the air! Should be on the ground around 11:30am local.

The festivities at JFK were nice, with some speeches from JetBlue team members as well as some Daytona Beach representatives. We're going to be playing inflight bingo on our way down to Daytona.

Flight appears to be about 70-75 percent filled.

They will do fine in DAB

Kinda like an east coast SRQ.

Will it be great? No. Will the 190 make an appearance? Yes. Could a weekend BOS start down the road? Likely.

NYC is the number 1 market from Daytona. Always has been. One flight a day on an airline that has hubs in JFK and in nearby MCO will do fine.

Just remember, this airline keeps cities like ABQ, RNO, and SMF going on much longer transcons

100% correct. I was in the room for Dave's final goodbye when this route was announced and it was a bit of a "Goodbye" gift for Dave since he had been pushing for this route for years.

I believe it is a bit business and a bit personal. I remember Dave clearly mentioning easy access between Embry Riddle and JetBlue's hometown and headquarters up in NYC.

It has also been publicly stated B6 is in it for the long haul and has made that clear to city officials.

If I remember right they are also looking to do some kind of partnership/program with ERAU students at some point.

This route should do fine. NY, if any area, is the area to fly to for this market. The NK talk is nonsense considering how long DL has been here, and now American.

An article in the News-Journal said as much- something like "We didn't start it before because the timing wasn't right and we don't like to pull out of markets", which makes sense seeing as there are only a handful of markets they've ever abandoned (ATL, CMH, TUS, BNA).

If Delta could not make the route work for more then one season I don't see this flight lasting very long at all.

I think JetBlue has a lot better of a chance at success on the route than did Delta. For one, JetBlue's business model is more geared up for this type of flight, being an LCC. Also, Delta only started the route in response to JetBlue entering talks with the Daytona Beach Airport.

Looking at this week, the flights seem to be hovering around 100-120 passengers per flight. Obviously this doesn't say anything about profits, but I think JetBlue can make it work. They have more invested in this than Delta did, operating a seasonal E-175 out of LGA on Saturdays with pretty high fares (atleast from what I saw when I tried booking the flight).

This route should be fine and probably kill it until say April 15th. That is when the real test begins and it will be much harder to fill the flight. I think they might be able to pull it off, B6 is well known in both markets an has lots of fans. I am rooting for them on this route.

Happy to finally see dreams become a reality! Worst comes to worse they knock it down to an E190 during the slow season and then upgrade when the busy season hits. A321s operate during race week too!

This is great, but as a regular traveler between NYC and DAB, nerve wracking since I have seen airlines come and go. It is nice to see JetBlue in it for the long haul, they don't just pull out of cities, which is reassuring.

Correct. And to amplify on what Werdy said that day Dave also spoke of his hope that ERAU students would be able to work the flight as a "live laboratory" for a coop experience, gaining hands on operational experience.

Let's face it, as much as we would love to see more development, it is such an easy airport to use. You get through security really quickly, you can get to the airport an hour before your flight and still have time to kill, and it is a nice airport, even if it is small.

You have no idea how significant that is. Also cheaper parking, less gas, lack of a 1.5 hour drive, you're at baggage claim in about the same time it takes to get through security. I'm sorry but flying out of MCO is a nightmare because of that.

Nope, I agree with you. They're similar and JetBlue made SRQ work for years, and they expanded a lot for the type of market it is.

DAB has JAX and MCO just like SRQ has TPA and RSW. Same situation.

AA - DAB-RDU (MD-80)

DL - DAB-ATL (737/MD-80)

Gulfstream - DAB-MIA and DAB-MCO-MIA
PA Express - DAB-MIA (J31)
PI/US - DAB-CLT (733) and DAB-JAX-CLT (732)
Presidential (BAe 146) - also as CO Express and UA Express

Jeez, wish someone could convince B6 to start PRC...all us Riddle students out in Arizona are getting tired of ZK's antics.

My gut tells me you're going to end up with Boutique out of PRC sooner or later.

And to think when I attended Embry Riddle in 1978 I flew from DAB to Atlanta on an Eastern L-1011 in hybrid Air Canada colors...The L-1011 was a regular winter customer...Oh and lets not forget the PCF Convair 880 doing touch and goes visiting up from Miami too....

You guys are old! Joking!

GE was there. It was also a different time. Post regulation, pre regional jet, pre too many excess hubs

I've struggled to find it, but isn't there a site with pictures of the old terminal at DAB?

Which is why I think B6 isn't going anywhere. Could this be reduced to an E190 on a seasonal basis? Yes, but do I think they'll leave DAB? No.
