SriLankan Airlines Ends A340 Operations

Fri Jan 08, 2016 12:17 pm

Another A340 fleet bits the dust as SriLankan Airlines performed its final A340 flight on January 7, 2016.

Carrier received 5 A330-300 aircraft last year as replacement equipment.

Shame - beautiful birds, and barely 15 years old - but hard to argue it doesn't make economic sense. I flew 4R-ADG last April, DXB-CMB in First Class. Ex CX plane with 2010-era CX First Class. Fantastic flight and lovely crew. Long live the four holer.

The A340 is a strange aircraft, I find it butt ugly on the ground but stunning in the air. The above photos demonstrate perfectly.

Hope the A330s work well for UL an airline I'd love to try, and love to fly to MEL one day...

I flew 4R-ADB (MSN 33) and I enjoyed my flight hugely. A classic bird with 21 years of happy flying under her belt before she was retired.

Isnt this the airline which got some A340s blown up due to war attacks in the 1990s?

unfortunately for the A340, in the case of UL the A333 and A332 has way much better economics for every single route they operate.

Very few A343 left in the sky.

Like the 777 then. I find the 77W butt-ugly on the ground, but in the air it looks graceful from some angles.

Think it was one A343 destroyed, one damaged (perhaps a write-off). But there were two A330's destroyed (not sure of model), and an A320 badly damaged. Airforce jets were also destroyed and damaged by the very effective 2001 Tamil Tigers attack.

Very sad  The Airbus 340 is the most elegant civilian airliner still flying.

Their A330s are nice, but it's a real shame not to see these at Heathrow any longer.
