No kidding. I think my LAX - SAN flight on a DL L-1011 was $12. SFO - LAX was about $28, or a few more for first class.

In 1978 my first L-1011 ride was TWA LAX-SFO, flight #91. I flew DL L-1011 SFO-LAX twice in 1979 as flight #1164. In 1985 I flew TWA SFO-LAX L-1011 flight #760 which continued to LHR as a 747 which I connected to that day.

Absolutely they did, IIRC, several a day, with at least a few of those stopping 2, 3 or 4 stops before arriving MSP. GTF, MSO, BIL, BIS were regular DC-10 stops from sEA to MSP & NW's Montana was all served out of GEG heading east.

As most here have heard this already, I won't get too into this, but during the 80's-90's one of those markets was PDX-SEA-PDX. With widebody carriers like EA, DL, BN, NW, UA, CO, PA, TW & HA to name a few, plus all the other narrowbodies on those carriers, in addition to AA, QQ, OC, QQ, SI, WA, FL, SY, US, RC, RW, WC, TZ, JK, W7 & KN to name a few more, fares were as low as $10 to $30 o/w I've paid $33.00 r/t on TW. Spent a lot of time ticking carriers & types off my list, early in my aviation career.

Some time in the mid 80's TWA had a 767 routed MCI-STL-LGW. I flew on it once intrastate. In '91 I had a very unusual routing on AA all DC-10's PHX-DFW-IAH-HRL. I've never seen a double connection domestic before or since. Unusual to connect at IAH on AA but I think the second connection was to meet a DC-10 operating ORD-IAH-HRL. Probably a short lived way to fill up a tag on to HRL.

TW had an L1011 LAX-SFO in the 1980's.

The PSA L-1011s did SFO-LAX with a few continuing on LAX-SAN. I think they very briefly did SMF-LAX and SFO-BUR also.

Not only did UA do a HNL-ITO tag-on with 747s, but I think NW did so with a 747 also.

Air Canada runs a 763 on AC461 YOW-YYZ and AC464 YYZ-YOW. I believe that rotates the YOW-LHR plane in and out, while providing end of work day coverage for heavy traffic.

When American operated DC-10's to ROC in 1972-1973, one of the milk runs went LAX-ORD-ROC-SYR! So, late in the evening, a DC-10 hopped 80 miles from ROC to SYR to finish its day! One of four daily DC-10 departures from ROC in that timetable (others to LGA, ORD, and CLE).

I remember flying ATL-MIA-FLL on a DL 763. It arrived around 1:30...in fact, we landed W to E in MIA, and then took off in the opposite direction for the quick up and down to FLL.

I wish there were more widebody flights today, but it just doesn't make economic sense, and frequency makes for more flights, less seats let flight.

NW had a small hub in TPA from the late 70's to the mid-80's-it closed shortly after they bought RC and inherited MEM. TPA-FLL and TPA-MIA were both heavies-either a DC10 or a 747 depending on the season. My brother (a former A.netter) says TPA-PBI and TPA-MCO also got the DC10 in the winter but I don't remember that. The other southbound spokes were FMY/RSW and eventually SRQ. Northbound flights went to DTW, MSP, ORD, CLE MKE, ATL and eventually BOS and JFK (with some of these continuing to other places). Slightly OT but one day the DTW-TPA-PBI flight was delayed in TPA because some snow had gotten into the cockpit in DTW. When they got to altitude the snow turned to ice. When they landed in TPA the ice melted and flooded the cockpit!

The AA DC-10 that lost the cargo door after takeoff from DTW in 1972, causing severe control difficulties, was operating LAX-DTW-BUF-LGA.

i would say the winner on oddities is the NW DC-10s in Montana during the 1970s. I flew from SEA to GEG one day, in 1974(?) just to ride the DC-10 back to SEA. I still don't understand why my family thinks I am crazy. After all, I got a NW 707-300, a NW 747, a WA DC-10 and a WA 720 out of that trip. Perfect sensible to a 16 year old plane fanatic.

I shall also add that from time to time, AA flew the DC-10 between TUS and PHX.

I might also add the Hughes Air West F-27 flight where the stewardess changed from a miniskirt to short shorts halfway between Klamath Falls and Bend. I was a happy child that night.

What is the point of that and when you say the flight, do you mean that was the only flight they did that on? What is so special about Klamath Falls to Bend? lol

At one point in the mid-eighties TW ran a 767 between PIT and PHL. It was a through flight to either LGW or LHR. I remember a fair number of intra-Florida wide bodies during that same time frame when I lived there. PA on TPA-MIA and MCO-MIA and I seem to recall some UA and DL on these same pairs as well.

Um UA flies OGG-ORD almost daily several seasons of the year.

Also, I think the tag to KOA was scheduled infrequently even up to very recently

Where did I say it was inappropriate??? I just asked if it was something Hughes Airwest did on all flights or was it something random on your flight. If you don't know the answer, just say so or don't answer.

Off the intrastate topic but it would have been PIT-PHL-LHR. TWA operated to LHR from PHL but when they sold the route to US it had to switch initially to LGW before open skies. That route was offered to AA in the original sale but I believe the DOJ blocked that from the sale for some reason.
