AA Announces LAX-SEA/PDX/MSP/MSY/MCI/OMA/BDL/ANC

Wed Jan 20, 2016 6:23 pm

AA has announced today that they will be adding, from this summer, 20 new flights to 9 new destinations, as well as more frequencies to existing destinations. With these additions, by June AA will operate 220 daily flights from LAX to 70 destinations. AA is building 2 new gates in T4, for a total of 15 (the space comes from reconfiguring widebody gates that are no longer needed because most intl flights will depart from TBIT). The new routes are:

New year-round routes:

- SEA: 5 daily
- PDX: 3 daily
- MSP: 2 daily
- MSY: 1 daily
- MCI: 1 daily
- OMA: 1 daily
- BDL: 1 daily

New seasonal routes:

- ANC: 1 daily
- DRO: weekend

Summer additions to existing routes:

- JAC: 1 daily
- MTJ: weekend
- EGE: weekend

AA is also starting LAX-HND and LAX-AKL this year, as already announced. Last year, AA started LAX-SYD/MEX/MBJ.

Is the that car for VIP/celebrities? They would have to pass through TSA as well...what's the spiffy car for?

Great news for AA and LAX. There are some routes [SEA, PDX, ANC] that are going directly against their partner AS which they were already code-sharing with...

AA offers VIP service in certain cities. The "Flagship" of this program is at LAX. They have been doing it for a long time. DL has something similar in some cities as well.

Interesting that they're giving BDL another go. Other than that, none of those routes really surprise me, although all of them being mainline would.

Also, no mention of HKG.

Agreed but one HKG flight is about equal cost to these 20 flights. And these will be more profitable. AA is deadly serious about LAX.

Amazing growth at LAX! No doubt that AA will be the #1 carrier at LAX with all international and domestic expansion lately.

From when will these be bookable? Cannot find them when searching their schedule.

Why PDX and SEA ? AS has a lot of frequency on those routes which AA code shares on. Did AA FFs want AA metal that bad for upgrades ? Not that I think it is but I hope for AA and AS to not evolve into the same relationship as DL and AS.

Those are markets AA needs to be in if they are serious about LAX.

Another thought too about AS. Maybe AS will reduce frequencies on the LAX-PDX/SEA routes when they have there announcement next week. Reallocate and put them on different / new routes.

There is a fine balance between codeshares and being able to move enough of your own pax.

There are only finite amount of seats that AS can offer on those rotues. I suspect the simply cannot handle the traffic potential AA can offer. Also, at the end of the day, AA is a business. If solidifying their portfolio in LAX means to fly their own metal to SEA/PDX then that's what it means. Even if it means flying at a loss. On a grand scale, LAX-SEA/PDX is small potatoes on an RPM basis. A route like that is worth it to fly even if you don't make money. Others, not so much.

How many flights a day are there now between LAX and SEA? Has to be north of 20??

Alaska was at around 10, Delta was doing 5-7, Virgin has some and I think UA still had a couple?

Is the market really that big?

SEA-LA Basin is 45 flights per day (each way)
SEA-LAX is 26 flights per day.

Now it'll be 50/31 respectively:

Where are they going to place these two new gates in T4?
Any word on which of these new cities will be mainline versus regional service?
Obviously, BDL will be mainline. I suspect with a A319.

I am surprised about SEA/PDX/ANC. Perhaps these will be operated with E75/CR9s (SEA/PDX)?

14 on AS, 7 on DL, 2 on UA, and 2 on VX. = 25. Now it'll be 30 with AA. I'm sure some frequencies are going to die with this many flights.

PDX-LAX is currently at 13. 6 on AS, 5 on DL, 2 on WN. 3 more will make 16.

Where are the planes being moved from I wonder?

How will Delta react?

Will AS shrink LAX and if so where will they go instead?

Don't be surprised to see AS drop a couple of frequencies to free up planes for their next round of expansion on the east coast. This could be the beginning of seeing AS and AA optimizing their codeshare.

I'm betting some if not all of this will be funded by way of a/c coming online. That doesn't mean the new planes will be on these routes but suspect a shuffle in what a/c flies what. Still, when you look at the SKDs, it doen't take that many a/c to operate these routes. I also feel that some will be "through" the out stations. I.E. DFW/CLT-MSY-LAX-SEA or something like that you get the point. Most of the a/c DL fly out west are not "based" out there but come from SLC/ATL.

Why? AS already operates SEA/PDX to AA hubs and this increases options for both carrier's clientele. The DL invasion of SEA is a very different game.

All the year-round routes are listed under mainline on the LAX wikipedia page, I know that probably is not accurate, and I am sure it will change when we know a little more.

If those are all indeed mainline, we will probably be seeing lots of A319s and a few 190s at LAX.

DL & NK were in a p'ing match on DTW/LAX. NK was to add a second frequency (320) and upgauged the incumbent flight to a 321; they offered fares from OW$90-$120 (inclusive) all but a few days. DL responded by dumping additional capacity into the market YOY and offering RT$220-$280 (inclusive) on select flights all but a few days -- the lowest fares they've offered since the merger. There is a correction going on right now (NK's recent schedule change dropped the second frequency for all but a few weeks, and kept the incumbent flight at a 320) but now's not the time to be adding more capacity into the market.

OMA-LAX is interesting, in that UA only flies OMA-SFO one weekend per year (the weekend of the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting). It will be interesting to see if UA decides to fly OMA-SFO year round.

True. With something like a 200 percent frequency advantage, though, AS may not care much. Even though Los Angeles is a large and important market, the competitive environment likely means that 5x LAX-SEA is much less threatening than 5x SEA-GEG or SEA-BOI.

5 daily to Sea and 3 daily to PDX, pretty soon the bloom will be off the rose with Alaska.

Not until they start flying SEA-ANC, FAI, JNU, KTN, SIT, PSC, YVR, GEG..... Right now they are solidifying a hub to the south that has been there for a long time.

Just launched last month. I think it's subsidized by the Jamaican government or a resort consortium of sorts.

Flew this two weeks ago. Was one of 24 people on the flight.
