Would UA Sponsor Chicago White Sox?

Wed Jan 20, 2016 11:32 pm

Very interesting article here about corporate sponsorship of Major League Baseball. It mentions United sponsoring the Chicago White Sox.
Any thoughts on its feasibility?

I believe the White Sox official airline sponsor is already United Airlines.

That is correct.

Among Chicago sports teams, UA has deals with the Sox, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks - the latter two play in the United Center, where UA has naming rights until 2034. Soldier Field's premium lounge is also called the United Club, which is different from the United Clubs found at ORD and elsewhere. All four teams also fly UA to away games.

The Cubs and Fire have AA as their official airline sponsor, though the Cubs fly UA when traveling to away games.

WN does not have a sports sponsorship in Chicago. Their last one was the Cubs, which was lost to UA and later AA. At the old MDW terminal after WN cinched the Cubs sponsorship (and most of MDW itself) from Midway Airlines after ML shut down, Southwest had Cubs-themed gates.

UA is the official airline and charter transport for the team. AA used to do the charters before, even with their 2005 championship run. American now has the Cubs as a sponsor so that leaves United to go for the White Sox for the long run. It's a weird chart they have but Boeing has a big sponsorship presence in Chicago.

The article is not about who flys the teams, it's about the naming of the teams, such as the United Airlines White Sox.

To me this just seems like a hypothetical blog post.

Right... Which hopefully will never happen.

Exactly. It certainly doesn't seem to warrant discussion on its own thread in a civil aviation forum. Hypothetically the Powerball could go above $2 billion after twenty rounds with no winner, and then be won by only me. If so, could I maybe buy the Cubs and change their name to the OMP777X Chicago Cubs?
