Air China 777-300ER Diverted To Miami

Sat Jan 23, 2016 5:10 am

An Air China 777-300ER that was going from Havana to Beijing with a stop in Montreal has just diverted to Miami. Please see link:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/C...9/history/20160123/0224Z/CYUL/KMIA

Does anyone know what is going on? Currently this plane is sitting on a taxiway with engines off.

Thanks!

I've been watching it sit there on Flightradar24 for two hours now and was wondering what it was doing there.

CA 879 looks like is the PEK - YUL - HAV flight, not the other way round.

it will be a problem, maybe that's why they are not even in a gate, maybe some of the pax will be happy to stay in MIA.

Why diverting to MIA when HAV is so close by?? This is going to be interesting.

Nothing in the news, and the always knowledgeable and friendly user Miami hasn't chimed in yet. Hopefully it's just a tech stop and nothing too serious

The same thing that happens whenever a diverted plane lands in the US?

Of course it won't.

Just as they would with any other diverted flight.

I wonder if it will have to stay longer due to crew working hours! Then, in that case the pax will HAVE to deplane in MIA. Isn't there some sort of aviation convention forcing passengers regardless of nationality access to stay within the terminal in case of emergency?

I know the NW airlines which made an emergency landing in THR, where Americans got to deplane without repercussions.

This flight will be all Canadian tourists anyways, maybe a couple Chinese businessmen; I doubt there will be many Cubans on board anyways.

Now if only CA could route its PEK HAV flight via MIA in the future...

And? Has the situation been resolved yet? We taxied right by them on our way to the Western U apron just before 1 A.M. and were wondering why this plane was just sitting there.

Maybe you can explain this statement a little better? The United States has one of the more generous immigration policies when it comes to Cubans, and now one of the more liberal immigration policies when it comes to the Chinese. Are you worried about discrimination against any Canadians on the flight?

Maybe his concern is with those pax, who don't have neither valid ESTA nor US visa, and how CBP may treat them?

I was worried about idiotic bureaucracy forcing people to sit on the plane or in a holding area for hours or days. Idiotic bureaucracy can be far worse than malevolence.

I would presume that there was a serious enough mechanical/electrical problem, that is was better to divert to MIA with likely far better access to parts and mx crews to make them rather than continue to HAV where it might be more difficult. Hopefully this could be a problem that is resolved in hours. If more than lets say 12 hours, that could be a problem. More critical would be crew time outs issues so may be more that a few hours to allow crew rest.

While the likely few Cuban pax might take advantage of being in the USA if have to get off the plane, changes in USA-Cuba polices might mean fewer doing so. I am quite sure USA ICE would make special limited visas available to all pax if from China or other countries to allow them to go to hotels if have to stay more than 12 hours. Less than 12 hours, they would likely be required to stay in secure areas of the airside of the terminal. Because their destination was HAV, it would be very difficult to transfer them to another flight out of MIA, but even then, perhaps a special charter could be arranged. As to any freight, that could be a hassle, but would be similarly worked out.

Well there....Miami gets his wish....Air China in MIA !!!!

Someone correct me if I am wrong. If a Cuban sets foot on US soil, they can stay. No immigration process at all. So could a pax just say that they want to stay in the US?

Why use a dingy when one can use a 777?

I'm no expert on Flightaware, but it looks like the flight made it to HAV eventually:

If they were on a plane to China, it's pretty safe to say that they probably have the means to get to the U.S. if that's their desire. And it's also pretty safe to say that they probably were interested in getting to China and not the U.S.

The original flight was descending into HAV and then turned around and headed back into MIA. No FR24 receivers at HAV, so we can't see what happened, but the weather was VMC, so we can rule bad weather out. Most likely cause is that HAV's single runway was not available for some reason due to an emergency or any other situation on the ground.

Chances are the number of Cubans on this flight was zero.

I love how people are assuming Cubans have the ability to freely travel.

Since January 2013 Cubans can travel freely to any country as long as they get a visa from the county they wish to visit.

The aircraft eventually taxied to gate H12 (I assume to be serviced) and at 0851z (0351L) they departed for HAV.

The aircraft departed on time from HAV for its return to YUL. Good thing it is scheduled to HAV from its scheduled 0115z arrival until its 1400z departure.

B-2040 is currently en route to PEK, and is expect to arrive 12 minutes ahead of schedule at 0918z.

More often than not its airline idiotic bureaucracy and extreme stupidity that makes people sit on planes more than government regulations do.
