Any reason why United is flying the 789 to HNL from MEL? Is this a diversion on MEL-LAX? It's under the reposition/charter call sign.

UA99 MEL-LAX ship 3951 cancelled on Friday due maintenance. This was getting aircraft back to the US. It required a HNL fuel stop due maintenance.

I'm struggling to get the whole story here. LAX-MEL diverted to SYD, and now is being ferried MEL-HNL. What happened in between?

Sounds like two unrelated incidents?
1) UA99 MEL-LAX ship 3951 cancelled on Friday due maintenance, ferried back to LAX via HNL
2) LAX-MEL diverted to SYD Wednesday due to weather in MEL. Eventually made it to MEL after fuel & crew change.

The crew from #1, pilots and flight attendants, all flew on Qantas from SYD to MEL and they are the crew on #2 and they are overnighting in HNL due to crew timing issues. If the plane has mx issues, the crew doesn't know anything about those mx issues.

Look in FLIFO.
States flight CANX due maintenance, and aircraft being moved as non revenue flight with added HNL fuel stop for maintenance.

Maybe it's just my awareness but UA seems to have a lot of tech issues in MEL and SYD last two months seems to have been frequent aircraft parked in SYD- is this my perception of reality? Is anyone able to pull the stats?

UA2052 24 January B787-9 wasn't a ferry flight. It carried a handful of passengers who were still in MEL following the cancellation of Fridays flight. There were only about 30-40 pax on board. I think it must have had to operate at a lower altitude hence the diversion to HNL.

In reply to LAXIntl - I work in an airline lounge at MEL and had 2 pax in the lounge who joined that flight!!
One of them told me she had been delayed since the aircraft initially went mechanical the day before. At about 15 mins before departure, the gate agent called me to see that there were no more pax in the lounge as they were almost ready to close up and go and were still missing a passenger!!
