Air Transat WiFi IFE
Good day! Just curious as to the status of the WiFi IFE installs on Air Transat. Are all of the A310's updated with this or is it still ongoing? Thanks for your help.

Would Transat even do the A310s? Aren't they supposed to go away?

Yes, all A310s have Wifi installed - however, this only allows you to connect to the onboard entertainment system, so that you can watch the available movies/tv shows on your smartohone/tablet, since the A310s don't have individual screens in economy.
The A330s and B737s don't have it. The A330s have individual seatback monitors, while the B737s just have the drop down monitors from the ceiling.

Sounds like a waste of money to me as usually people have their own content on their devices...

I think that this is part of the reason why airlines are going to a Wifi based IFE. Most people have an Android/iOS device that can connect to WIFi, thereby eliminating the need to install boxes, screens, wiring to each etc.
In my experience. all you have to see how bad seatback TVs get after a few years is to take a flight on WestJet. There TVs only work half the time, and many have sound issues (ie: broken ear phone plugs.) With that said, enRoute on AC seems to always work for me.
There is still going to be costs for content, app developement, wifi installation, etc... But it should be less than a seatback TV installation/maintenance cost.
Always looking for the longest route with the most transfers.

Why bother about content at all? Just give the Internet and people will keep themselves entertained for hours!

Wifi =/= internet.
For internet they would need to invest a lot more than what they put out for IFE through WiFi, which makes little sense on an old A310. Internet access speeds for airplanes are still too slow if you put them through satcom.
When losing situational awareness, pray Cumulus Granitus isn't nearby !
