I think that this is part of the reason why airlines are going to a Wifi based IFE. Most people have an Android/iOS device that can connect to WIFi, thereby eliminating the need to install boxes, screens, wiring to each etc.
In my experience. all you have to see how bad seatback TVs get after a few years is to take a flight on WestJet. There TVs only work half the time, and many have sound issues (ie: broken ear phone plugs.) With that said, enRoute on
AC seems to always work for me.
There is still going to be costs for content, app developement, wifi installation, etc... But it should be less than a seatback
TV installation/maintenance cost.
Always looking for the longest route with the most transfers.
