Superbowl Charters

Mon Jan 25, 2016 1:55 am

So, as the Championship games are today, its time to start planing for the charters. Broncos are already in so we can expect a UAL744 to take them from DEN to SJC. The other game is still on progress but it looks like Panthers will take it. Panthers fly AA so maybe we could see them bring a 77W to SJC. Charters should take place next Sunday. Also, airport traffic should start to pick up for Bay Area Airports. SJC is closing down taxiways for parking. RHV is closing a runway 31L for parking, OAK will close the smallest runway, and other airport have plans for parking. Should be an interesting week. I expect traffic to start to pick up Saturday and Sunday, slow down for Mon-Wed about, and then Thur-Sun it should really pick up with the 6th and 7th being busiest.

AA is adding CLT-SJC on Friday and 2 return flights on Monday as well as a few extra frequencies on CLT-SFO. There is a special SFO-DEN flight on Monday with a 321

I can bet that most of the charters will be going to SFO because they actually have parking and don't need to close a runway. The city is having 95% of the events for the super bowl. SJC and other municipal airports will see more private traffic than charter traffic. AA has no fleet slack to charter out a 77W as is. If anyone remembers Pope Francis got a 772, not a 77W. The main charter aircraft for AA is the 763 but since its the super bowl I can say its going to be a 772.

My local airport, Hollister KCVH, is anticipating spillover corporate traffic. The FBO owner warned me that if I wanted to fly super bowl weekend, the airport could be crowded and things getting crazy busy. The FAA sent out a special circular with instructions and expected IFR routings for every airport within 50 miles of SJC.

SFO is going to heavily regulated on the GA side. A large portion of GA traffic will be arriving, deplaning, and aircraft repositioned to other airports.

This week with the snowstorm back east SFO was backed to the gills. UA had 70 overnight planes both Friday and Sat., and with the SB traffic its expected to be worse.

There will also be a 30 mile TFR for all the non IFR traffic.

Watsonville (KWVI), my home airport about 50 mins. from Santa Clara/San Jose, is also expecting a lot of traffic and are moving the regularly ramp-parked aircraft elsewhere on the field. While I have seen Gulfstreams here, I don't expect the airport to host many as the ramp area isn't really conducive to larger aircraft.

When the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers arrive Sunday -- separately, of course -- they'll park their planes in Signature's cavernous 60,000-square-foot Hangar 7.

I highly doubt they will actually go in the hanger. The biggest thing hanger 7 can hold is a 767, and probably only a -200 as thats what it was built for. It can hold the 762 and 752 at the same time though. I know the Panthers are coming in an A330 on AA, not sure the type, and Broncos are on UA so I expect a 744.

Well the Broncos might not win the Super Bowl, but they win the better ride if they get the 744

Some behind the scenes pics of the Broncos departure, including the menu. And I have to say (by the looks of the chicken parmesan sandwich wrapped in foil, anyway) the catering seems a little low-brow for an NFL team:

I eat from 7 Eleven from time to time, and even their sandwiches (mostly) look better. Really. Surely they could've done better. Plenty of rich, and rich and famous on that flight.

NFL charters to the game are pretty much always catered with burgers or chicken sandwiches. FROM the game will often have steak, but a lot of teams only let the players eat the catered food on the way back if they win.

I've enjoyed many a nice meal from the extras of both ways, though.

Funny that this just popped up on 9news.com. I still say that was one bland, dry looking Chicken Parmesan sandwich. Hopefully for Peyton's sake, it was better than it looked:

There are two UA 764s going SJC-DEN this morning. There appears to be 4 charters running SJC-CLT, all narrow bodies. I thought that was interesting, given that the westbound was at least one wide body.

I'm not sure where you came up with 4 narrow bodies. The Broncos charters include 2 764's a 744 and a 738. The cheerleader are on the 738, the Broncos team is on one of the 764's, and the Broncos family and friends are on the other 764 and the 744. All other flights out of SJC on UA are our regular scheduled flights.
