The Order Codes For UA's B777-300ER/A350-1000/B787

Sat Jan 30, 2016 10:16 am

UA ordered the A350-1000, B777-300ER. Are they ordered by sUA? Will they be operated by sUA staff?

What about the B787s? Any ordered by PM/sUA? How many? Will they be operated by sUA staff?

Any news regarding the configuration+cabin upgrades?

The A350s will probably be A350-1041. Airbus doesn't use customer codes, the 4 signifies Rolls Royce engines and the 1 is "version 1"

The 787 doesn't use customer codes as well. They are the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 no matter if they are sUA/sCO (hopefully that will all be gone by the time the 787-10s come).

in the public view perhaps not, but if Lufty bought a 787-8 tomorrow, it would on most documentation be a 787-830, just as their 747´s are 747-830´ s ! this Argument crops up on various platform all the time. I for one think a customer denominator is a good thing, especially for enthusiasts!

That is true for the 747-8. Boeing uses just the -8 for marketing but still has customer codes. That is not true with the 787, there are no customer codes. Not sure how it will be with the 777-8/9 and 737MAX.

Look up UA's 787s on the FAA registry for example, and compare it to other aircraft types in their fleet. You will see it says 787-8, not 787-824 or whatever.

The MAX is confirmed to be dropping customer codes and I believe the 777X will do so, as well.

As Polot says this is incorrect. 787 and 737 MAX do not use customer codes on any documentation. Presumably 777X will drop them as well.

The first 25 787s are staffed by sCO cabin crew. Future 787s and the A350s will be staffed by sUA. I'm not sure about the 77W.

On Order:
25 787-10 (deliveries starting 2018)
4 787-9 (all will be delivered this year)

In service:
14 787-9
12 787-8

UA holds somewhere between 35 and 60 options for the 787 as well as having the right to switch between 787 models on order.

They also have 35 350-1000s (starting in 2018) and 10 777-300ERs on order (1 in 2016 and 9 in 2017.)
I know the voices in my head aren't real but sometimes their ideas are just awesome!!!

The largest order is actually for the 787-10, with 25 orders, starting in two years. UA has already accepted its entire 787-8 order, totaling 12, following conversion of 10 of these to the 787-10, along with a whopping 35 options. The 787-9 fleet is also shaping up quickly, with 14 on property and 4 deliveries left.

787-8: 12 all received
787-9: 14 received, 4 pending
787-10: 25 deliveries starting in two years

No 787 is currently operated by sUA FAs. As of now, all 787s, present and future, are or will be staffed by sCO FAs.

Let's first say this whole argument is only applicable to 1 work group. The FA's, who can't get an agreement done, for whatever the reason it is (no judgement). All UA pilots can bid for any fleet type. As I understand it with the delivery of the 25th 787 that final wall came down.

I would be very surprised if this statement is true after all 787's are delivered.
Technically speaking, all of the 787's delivered to UA up to now were ordered by pmCO. That is why they are staffed by sCO crews.
Since both pmUA and pmCO had (separate) orders for 787's, it would be logical to think that would hold into the future.
The pmUA 787 order was all for the 787-10, which is not flying yet hence that statement is true but may not be accurate forever.
(and if I recall the conversion of the 787-10's to 787-9's was done with the 777 order, hence on other threads it is logical to understand that those, the 777W's, will be sUA aircraft.)

I am sure if I am incorrect, someone will fix them as I am doing this from memory

It did and IIRC there are sUA crews in training (or done) to fly the 787.

The first 25 787s were the ones CO had on order at the time of the merger, and those are staffed by ex-CO crews. After the 26th, those are now able to be bid by all pilots, the ones who've been with United pre merger and former Continental pilots. PMUA FA's were supposed to staff these but now I've heard that they won't even though the 26th bird one technically was not on firm order from CO but from UA.

The UAL 2009 787 order for 25 788s was converted in 2013 to 787-10s and some of that order was converted to the 773, so the 773s should be staffed by PMUA crews.

Yes, the wall came down. We all know, however, that logic and reality do not always align - and as of right now there is no sUA FA staffed 787 flying into the February bid month. Whether or not they're being trained I do not know. If logic prevailed, this would all be a non-issue and the FAs would be a combined workgroup by now - but that's an argument for another day.

I fully expect more 787-9s to be ordered by UA at some point. Could UA also use those 787 options for other models in the future, like the 777X?
