PIA Unions Vow To Protests Against Privatization

Tue Feb 02, 2016 7:57 am

KARACHI:
Employees of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have decided to go on strike on February 2 after their talks with the government collapsed. The impending protest might result in cancellation of all flights and blockade of airports around the country.

The announcement came on Sunday following last-minute negotiations between PIA’s union leaders and government officials that saw emotions running high and one of the key labour leaders breaking down in tears before a news conference

In a move to stall an impending strike, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday enforced the Essential Services (Maintenance) Act 1952 for six months, barring protesting members of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from participating in any union activity.

“Any person found guilty of an offence under this Act shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year and shall also be liable to a fine,” the legislation reads.

Information minister says ‘those who continue the strike will be treated as enemies of PIA and Pakistan and they will end up losing their jobs’
Protesting PIA employees stand defiant, say will go ahead with strike ‘even if we are baton-charged’

I just returned back from khi airport as I went to fetch my parents. Three people have been shot and there is a massive police / army presence leading into the airport main area. Right now there are on going protests at the domestic section.

Good on Nawaz to ban the union protesting etc. Unions need to go if PK is to be improved.

The government appointed a German citizen Hayden Berg as the chief operating officer of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Tuesday.

On one hand, the government bemoans PIA’s financial deficit while on the other it is taking measures beyond comprehension. Instead of reconciling with protesting employees, the government has appointed a foreigner as PIA’s COO at Rs 2.5 million monthly salary. The government tasked Hayden Berg to transform the PIA into a profitable entity. A spokesperson for the national airliner, Danial Gillani confirmed the appointment of Berg.

This appointment is for COO, not to confuse with resignation of Chairman PIA, as mention by forum member Saleem.

According to Airfleets they have 38 aircraft.

The OP says 14,000 staff. IMO, that sounds high.

I would be curious to know about profitability, hard and soft product etc.

Continued state ownership which the staff want may not be best for the country.

The problem is knowing Nawaz, he would be selling off parts of PK to his "chelays" at rock bottom prices. Corruption has no boundaries when it comes to Nawaz and his stooges.

Yes, they do have too many employees and staff. That does need to be reduced.

Maybe he knows what he's doing.

PIA is a relic of the past. It is basic fact that an airline with 38 aircraft and 14,000+ workers is a recipe for financial nonsense. The workers at PIA need to understand that long gone are the days of inefficient, business-as-usual, state sponsored work ethics. PIA needs to transform itself into a competitive, reliable and home grown airline to compete against the giants in the MEB3, Turkish, etc. Without drastic action and a work ethic transformation similar to the one being attempted at Alitalia, a revival of PIA won't be possible.

Airline's unusual problem: It doesn't know where its passengers are

Travelers are all too familiar with the problem of airlines misplacing their luggage. But it's less common for carriers to lose track of large numbers of actual passengers.
That's the headache facing Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the country's flag carrier, as it wrestles with a crippling strike by workers who are furious over privatization plans..

"We have no data available on how many and where passengers with confirmed PIA tickets are waiting, because the entire system is shut, servers are down and no booking is being done," a senior official at the company said Friday.

I was thinking when their systems come back up.

Those who already have bought tickets have little choice.

Yes, that is correct. Even though some arrangements have been made with Turkish and Etihad Airways, but the problem is that they need some electronic confirmation from ticket issuing authority. i.e. PIA. They can't trust on just print out as it can easily be forged. Until Sabre GDS is not backed up with PK/ Partition, TK or EY can't lift PIA passengers.

Yes, it is correct that if they are beaten with the batons, they will not end the strike and will go with it. In my personal opinion the matter is now quite serious because most of the steps taken by the Government will not resolve the issue.

In 2008, I was short listed for the position of "Chief Internal Auditor" and had an interview with the Managing Director and some other Directors. At that time, I prepared a presentation on the losses of PIA and compared multiple areas with Emirates and Singapore Airlines and found very high spending at PIA's end in certain areas.

The issue is also political one, as many appointments in PIA are made on the political basis, which is also major reason for such heavy losses.

PIA flight operations partially restored, 2 flights depart for Jeddah

PK-749 and PK-7239, which are en route to Jeddah, will be bringing back the country’s 800 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia who had initially gone to offer Umrah.

The pilots, crew and ground staff of both flights belong to PIA.

They have also cancelled appointment of a German COO, a local will get the post instead, sale also might be put off for another year instead of six months that they told IMF, who are not happy with the repeated delays.

I think name is not finalized yet. I must say around 30% of PIA staff is inept and hire on political basis. Too much political influence is root of all evil in PIA.

Not sure how they can turnaround Airline in year period of time. They keep promise to 'RESTORE GLORY' of Airline and nothing happen.

The govt. is starting a new airline called Pakistan Airways Limited, its name has been registered with concerned authorities, initially it will fly domestic and no unions will be allowed in it.
