Arik Air Increases Dakar And Banjul Flights

Wed Feb 10, 2016 12:42 pm

Arik Air has officially confirmed that it will be implementing another round of capacity expansion into the lucrative West African market place in the following manner:

DKR - frequencies increased to daily one stop service from LOS with 4 flights operated via ABJ and 3 via ACC all with 5th freedom traffic rights. This increase is effective 22FEB and all flights are operated using a B737-700.

BJL - frequencies increased from 3 to 4 weekly flights; all operated from LOS via ACC using a B737-700. This increase is effective 14MAR and will result in W3 being the only carrier offering nonstop service between ACC and BJL.

As a result of the above, Arik Air becomes the preferred choice for Ghana residents flying to the major cities of West Africa as the airline will be connecting 6 cities nonstop i.e. Dakar, Lagos, Abuja, Monrovia, Freetown and Banjul.

Services to Libreville and Freetown are commencing in February with the announcement being made few weeks ago.

Arik has a series of route and fleet expansion plans that have already begun with these route announcements.

They have the following aircraft being added this year:

2 A330-200
1 CRJ-1000
2 Dash 8-400

It seems the airline is manoeuvring to enhance its public offering (IPO) which is scheduled for next year (2017). I firmly believe an IPO and institutional investment in Arik will strengthen the airline, its management capabilities, finances and ability to compete in the global market place.

Let us hope the negative economic impact of the collapsed oil prices do not heavily impact the airline's plans for this year and beyond.

As someone in the NGO community, West Africa so desperately needs a strong carrier that connect the major cities dotted along the Atlantic coast. Sometimes, it's cheaper and faster to fly through Europe [Paris, Amsterdam, or Brussels] just to get to neighboring countries!

Certainly hoping Arik Air can grow their West African network the way ET has in East Africa!

W3 already has a very large Central West African presence which is as follows:

LOS-ACC-ROB 4 wk
LOS-ACC-FNA 3 wk
LOS-ACC daily
LOS-ACC-BJL 4 wk
LOS-ACC-DKR 3 wk
ABV-ACC daily

LOS-COO-DLA 6 wk
LOS-PHC-LBV 3 wk
LOS-ABJ-DKR 4 wk
LOS-LAD 3 wk

LOS-FIH 2 wk (flown via DLA) was suspended in JAN 2014 due to poor S/F as a result of the civil war in Congo at that time.

ARIK has a checkered history in West Africa. They seem to do ok in Anglophone stations but Francophone has been tough for them. They tried OUA and BKO and couldn't make it work.

The schedules they have loaded between DKR and ABJ are terrible. I certainly won't use them with such schedules, no matter how low their fares are.

And their fares are low in most markets. I can't really understand this. KQ was charging high fares between ACC and ROB, and then ARIK came in with really low fares. They don't seem to be very interested in making money. Cost of operation is too high in the region.
