AA Adds PHX-RDM And DFW-SBA

Fri Feb 19, 2016 6:12 pm

I have not seen it on here but today AA released on one of the employee publications that they will re-launch DFW-SBA (seasonal) with Mesa CRJ-900 equipment and PHX-RDM with OO CRJ-700. Both will be one daily.

Yes, SBA has service from PHX and RDM has seasonal service from LAX. I am almost certain back in the HP days there was RDM-PHX (but not 100% certain).

They had MFR and EUG service but never RDM.

Really happy about RDM! Now if AA would add something out of PSC and I'll be a happy camper.

DFW-SBA begins June 2 on a CRJ-900 operated by Mesa Airlines.

Initial schedule:

Depart DFW at 10:50 am; Arrive SBA at 12:38 pm
Depart SBA at 2:14 pm; Arrive DFW at 7:30 pm

Really happy to see AA re-start DFW-SBA. I only wish the DFW-SBA flight was a bit later in the day, perhaps an early evening departure from DFW, which would allow for a midday departure from East coast destinations connecting to SBA.

This is great news, Bend and the surrounding area is beer/outdoors paradise.

The times look pretty good too.

PHX - RDM connecting in PDX is a time chore.

Side note connecting RDM - PHX via LAX last week on the new AE E75, great ride. Will these OO CR7s have Wifi?

Interesting that PHX-RDM is a CR7 as I do not believe there are currently any other CR7 routes out of PHX. I would not be surprised at all to see EUG/RDM/Montana in the not so distant future. Additionally, SBA-DFW gives SBA the one stop global connectivity that AA lost when they ended SBA-LAX.

I swear, RJ's are going to take over the US and it's going to eventually be point-to-point even for the majors.

Indeed the timings are not great. Not for SBA customers either as DFW connections will mean taking the last ones of the night after 830pm or so. An morning or even noon departure from SBA would have been far better for beyond Dallas access.

I agree. Flying East from SBA means a very late arrival into MIA, DCA, LGA, BOS, etc. Perhaps AA could have rotated the CR9 with a PHX flight to allow for a slightly better schedule. However, the timings do offer SBA-originating pax good connectivity to South America and other one stops not available through PHX.

I travel to SB often and am very happy with this addition - one flight is better than none. Now, if only AA would also re-start LAX-SBA to connect to the transcons from JFK, DCA and BOS.

Would the short runway at SBA give the CR9 any weight restriction issues on the SBA-DFW segment?

IIRC, they flew DFW-SBA-DFW on M80's nonstop back in the 80's or 90's.

Wow, I didn't see PHX-RDM coming, hopefully it will do well. It's good to see new service added from PHX, even if it is only an RJ route.

Looks like the PHX-RDM flights were the result of a US DOT Small Community Air Service Development Program grant.

Also keep in mind that most likely they won't be just one route that the CR7 will do that won't make sense! I wounder what other routes we will see the CR7 will be on? I hope to see PHX-FLG on a CR7

There are not that many OO CRJ700s coming from UA to be based at LAX, unless the plans have changed. PHX-RDM is timed to RON and head off to LAX in the morning. Might be that one of the CRJ 700s that are replacing 17'5s on LAX-TUS will head to from TUS to PHX to make this possible?

The newer RJ's are not the same. CR7 CR9 and the E-jets are SO much nicer than the CR2 and EMB-145. As long as the seat pitch is good, no difference between the newer RJ's and the 737/A320 families. With no middle seat.

Agree...they're very nice, especially the Embraer. While there will always be hubs, I can see the majors beginning to consider offering more non-stop service that doesn't go through a hub. The domestic airline industry could be in for a major change.

So just like 1999 all over again. If you look at route maps from the pre-9/11 era, the legacy carriers were flying a lot more P2P routes. Seeing more of those kinds of routes again would be classic "low fuel" behavior, but just as was the case 15 years ago those routes would be cut in an instant the second that fuel goes up and/or their is an economic downturn.

Quoting AABB777 (Reply 11):
Flying East from SBA means a very late arrival into MIA, DCA, LGA, BOS, etc.

Other than LGA you can already reach those destinations multiple times daily via PHX. The DFW route opens up smaller central and eastern markets, and for those the timings should be adequate as there is almost no one-stop competition.

Quoting AABB777 (Reply 11):

I pretty sure that's what they are doing that already, as I can't imagine why you would schedule a 2 hour turn on a CR9.

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

I thought YV was moving the CRJ900s mainly back to PHX. Is that the ultimate plan? Maybe this route will go to Envoy E175 once they receive more.

You haven't been paying attention to the pilot shortage have you? AA and, especially, DL have already begun trying to take more flying back to mainline as a result of their regionals' inability to staff their equipment. UA will be next one to make this move with their impending purchase of additional A319s. Expect to see some major consolidation at the regional level, with the weaker players going by the wayside.

YV CRJ900s are doing a lot of DFW flying right now. Mesa moved out of CLT, with most of the flying going to PSA. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of? If the route does move to the 175, I would expect it to be operated by Compass, rather than Envoy.
