Ghost Airport? Why No Planes?

Sat Feb 20, 2016 7:37 am

Looking at the Google Maps satellite image of MBJ where I'll be vacationing in a couple weeks, and there are no airplanes to be seen at all. Why would this be? Surely during the day there would be some aircraft there.

Just a thought, but maybe taken shortly before a hurricane was due? After all a hurricane is irrelevant to satellites passing in orbit, but which airline would leave flyable planes sitting its path?

The photo is from January 21, 2014 (Goggle Earth lets you see images over time), so that's outside the hurricane season, but someone may come up with something about that time.

Every other image I saw on Google Earth had at least a handful of jets at the gates.

Every once in awhile at small to medium airports you'll have a weird half hour or so where NOTHING is happening. No planes landing, taking off, loading, unloading...

I've experienced this 2 or 3 times while working the ramp at BNA, pretty much every time on a Saturday afternoon. It's a very eerie feeling to walk out on the ramp and hear no aircraft noises and see no planes.

January 21, 2014 was a Tuesday... which in the US is about the 2nd least busy day for a lot of airlines. I'd guess the plane taking Google Earth's pictures that day overflew at just the right time. 5-10 minutes earlier or later and there probably would have been a plane at or near the gate.

Google uses satellite pics, not airplane flyover.

There are quite many cars in the parking lot. Maybe they had all left in outbound flights, and waiting their relatives on inbound flights. It's not so strange...

Google uses a combination of the two. I believe a lot of the closer up photos are taken by aircraft.

Hey, that Doctors Cave Beach Hotel seems like it would have some good apron views if you can get a room facing the terminal.
Keep on truckin'...

Well, Montego Bay is operated by Mexican operator GAP (Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico) and the figures show 365k pax for January 2016 and a 5.5% increase compared to January 2015.

Yes, that's very common. If you look at the airport's website which shows all arrivals and departures for today, there is a period of almost 2.5 hrs from 0753 to 1020 with no arrivals, and the AA flight that arrives at 0753 departs at 0900. So from 0900 until the next arrival at 1020 there were presumably no aircraft parked at the teriminal.

Arrivals/departures during the period 0753-1145:

AA 0753/0900
WS 1020/1110
TS 1030/1130
B6 1048/1145

Very common especially in China, where secondary airports only sees a handful of arrival/departure a day, all of them narrowbody short turnaround. Given that there are almost no General Aviation in China, most of those secondary airport is a giant empty field most of the day.

Hong Kong is not China. Not better or worse, just different.
