Why No A320neo's For DL?

Tue Feb 23, 2016 9:46 pm

Delta's A320 fleet is getting a little long in the tooth. They are spending a lot to increase seating and removing most of the aft galley since hot meals are no longer served in coach domestically. I was trying to figure out if some of the "unannounced" orders for A320neo's might be for DL? Perhaps they consider the B737-900's or A321ceo's to fill that gap. DL claims to be very happy with the A320 but as the years add up so do the maintenance costs. Granted, frugal DL will fly the existing ones until they time out and are due for a major check. But I was curious if they would be interested in replacing a good airplane with the same thing?

Looking at the advanced orders it seems that the A319neo is not such a hot seller and I can't see DL wanting more of them.

Anyone have any opinions (silly question on a.net where there is never a shortage of opinions!).

DL will most likely buy more current gen narrowbodies ie 73G/8/9 and 319/20/21. I don't see a max/neo order in the foreseeable future. I think they may even skip a generation and purchase whatever is available mid 2020's. I could see a sizable fleet of MOM a/c
Long live US/ HP the airline that took over the world!

Delta buys opportunistically. Airbus will not need to make big deals on the neo for a long time.

But FWIU, they've made some pretty sweet deals on CEOs... which seems to be right up DL's alley.

According to a-net legend, the 787 order will be converted to the 737MAX and thus no need for the A320NEO!

Because A320Neo's are not old and used yet, give it some time.

based on the reported prices that UA paid for their 73G's, if DL needs more narrowbodies and (big) IF Boeing still has 737NG slots they really want to fill, I'd think the 737-800 is the favorite. I'm sure they are drooling at the reported $20-25m pricetag of those UA birds.

Pretty sure Airbus aren't willing to offer NEOs for USED CEO prices, which I'm sure is what DL will be after

Delta is in a pretty good position to bridge the gap from CEO/NG to NEO/MAX. The majority of their current fleet sans the MD88s will carry them until the new models are well established. They will be able to be early NSA era plane adopters (if revolutionary), or pick up late model CEO/NG builds just like they are doing with todays aircraft as well as early build NEO/MAX.
