BBC: Passenger Aircraft Missing In Nepal

Wed Feb 24, 2016 4:56 am

The BBC is reporting that a Twin Otter operated by Tara Air has lost contact with controllers in Nepal.

Poor weather is hampering search efforts, so it may be a while before anything more is known.

Some sources say they where 23 passengers (e.g. http://mundo.sputniknews.com/asia/20...042045/avion-accidente-nepal.html) and they even say it crashed...

I flew the Jomsom-Pokhara route a number of years ago on Tara Air. Hope everything is ok, but it doesn't look good. You basically fly through a valley surrounded by 6000-8000m mountains on both sides. The report says that contact was lost 10 mins out of Pokhara, so it probably wouldn't have yet reached the mountainous area of the flight path.

LA Times, via AP, reports the wreckage has been found. No survivors. One Chinese national, one Kuwaiti, the rest Nepal citizens. Report says "carrying 23 people" but doesn't say if that number includes flight crew.

RIP to all and prayers to their families and loved ones..

23 people?... isn't the max pax load 19 people + 2 crew which would put the total max at 21? Looks like 2 children may have been on board... would that allow them to goto 23? Wonder if the plane was overloaded?

Most articles reporting "all 23 people," so I think that count is supposed to include the crew, which is being reported as 3.

That's very sad. I learned of this from my friend, who is a Twin Otter pilot. He knew (and of course) was friends with one of the pilots of this doomed flight.

The media is claiming that the aircraft involved was the new 400 version newly delivered just a few months ago. Weird that the most modern and safest model with the latest in terrain avoidance and weather radar would crash.

Is this the first fatal crash of the new 400 version ?

Not again. Flying in Nepal is dangerous business.

If the aircraft was a Viking 400 (the updated DHC-6 Twin Otter), Tara Air took delivery of 2 aircraft as follows:
9N-AKL msn 921 registered on 16 July 15 (ex C-GVAT)
9N-AHH msn 926 registered on 1 Oct 15 (ex C-GVUT)
R.I.P. to all on board.

"The minister for civil aviation, Ananda Prasad Pokharel, said bad weather was the probable cause. “The weather was not so clear,” Mr. Pokharel said. “Snowfall, rain and thick fog are responsible for the crash.” He said his agency would investigate why the plane took off in bad weather."
