Hey that's pretty cool. I'm good friends with one of the First Officers. I flew as a 777 expat captain for AI six years ago and my friend was the best Indian pilot I flew with out of all the others I crewed with.

I hate to rain on AI's parade. But AC has had a flight in the past from YYZ-HKG with an all female crew, 1 CA, 2 FOs, 1 RP, and 13 Flight Attendants. It is slightly longer than DEL-SFO.
Other than an internal note on a company daily newsletter, there was no acknowledgement of the "feat".

I also saw Ethiopian did the same thing last year or so, but I am not sure if the flight is this long.

I don't think so. Flight AI173 from DEL to SFO is longer than AC15 from YYZ to HKG.
Also, it's weird that AI flies the route westbound over the Atlantic instead of the shorter way via the Pacific...?

I was just going by great circle distances.
YYZ-HKG is 6787 nm and DEL-SFO is 6697 nm.

Advanced flight planning software will normally plan the minimum time track. It is not always the great circle distance nor route. I have seen European stations used as en-route ETOPS alternates for AC015, YYZ-HKG in the past ... giving you an idea of the route taken.

There are lots of all female crews flyin all over the world......qualified pilots are simply that...qualified pilots gender plays no roles in this anymore whats the big deal??

Hear hear. I think by paying special attention to the obvious fact that women (or any other defined demographic) can indeed do what they've been hired, trained and licensed to do, we devalue those abilities and perpetuate our plumbing as a workplace variable. We are so far removed from the days of gender-assigned roles that I wonder why this even bears mention. Unless it were a Saudi airline.
There are thousands of female commercial, military and test pilots in the industry, and the novelty of a group of competent women being assigned to conduct a common flight has long ago passed.
Personally, I'm awaiting a media story on a dental clinic in which all the hygienists are men.
The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

In many countries around the world, such as where you are both from, this is not newsworthy. But for countries such as India and Ethiopia, where sexism is rife and oppurtunities for women are siginificantly fewer than those available for men, on top of far fewer women in management and prominent jobs, this is newsworthy.
Small events such as these help shift cultural norms, and promote gender equality in societies in which women are often second class citizens.

The heavily-loaded 77L right out of DEL cannot safely overfly the Himalayas due to drift-down altitude being below some of the terrain in the event of engine failure. For this reason, they must fly to the west, which then puts them on track to overfly the Atlantic.
Kudos to AI for recognizing the importance of women in their operation. I wonder will this same crew be flying the next day's return?

I like how the article included with the original post used the word "manned" to described how the flight was crewed.

A deficiency of the English language. "Crewed" has a homonym that is pretty crude.

Just kidding! The psychological impact of this on young women in India is HUGE. But there is nothing remarkable about this. AI has several eminently qualified 777 commanders some of whom happen to be women. At some enlightened point in the future, this will induce nothing more than a yawn.
