First 787 For Air Austral Is Here

Tue Mar 08, 2016 9:59 am

Air Austral's first 787 returned from paint at VCV. Do we know anything on cabin configuration?

Wow. What the heck happened to the tail?

IMHO, that awful compared to their current tail:

Indeed, I must have totally missed they changed their livery. That poor 787, it would have looked so much better in the old livery.

That is their old livery. The 787 tail is actually better than some of their current tails in the new livery (can't link to some because on phone) because they went for a stylized look instead of an actual photo

Indeed, Air Austral changed their livery I think back in 2014. Each plane tail is different, with an image of Réunion Island's stunning landscape. Unfortunately I don't think it translates very well onto a plane. It looks a bit messy and you can't really tell what it is. The font of Air Austral on the fuselage is also odd.

The individualising of aircraft tails such as this reminds me of Norwegian and the BA world tails.

It also reminds me of SATA's new livery with the whale, which sounds like a good idea, but 'in the flesh' (in my opinion) looks like a photograph sticker slapped onto an aircraft.

I assume the 787 will be used on routes to Paris, though from Mayotte or Réunion?

Correct, see New Livery For Air Austral (by KarelXWB Sep 23 2014 in Civil Aviation) for more background information.

Why didn't they use an actual landscape photo sticker just as the other tails? Is it because of the material that the 787 tail is made of or will all aircraft now get similar tail logos just as this 787?

That is one gorgeous looking aircraft-livery combination!

Agree! On their other aircraft with the new livery, I thought they had actual photo images on the tails, but maybe they are also drawings. Also not sure what the white circle in the turquoise is supposed to be. It kind of looks like a sand bank deserted islet, but Reunion doesn't have this kind of geography, which got me thinking - is this image supposed to be of Mayotte? (where UU is also now operating?)

Their press release says 262 seats. Looking at their 77W configuration I assume they will be divided something like 12C/27Y+/222Y.

This article (French only, sorry) says 787s will be used on these routes:

Mayotte/Paris (4x/week high season, 2x/week otherwise)
Mayotte/Reunion (no frequency given) "to solve capacity problems"
Reunion/Bangkok (2x/week)

I assume it will usually be LN 22 that will fly the Paris service, as it has a higher MTOW and greater range than LN 15.

Interestingly, the article also mentions that the aircraft are terrible teens (translated as "enfants terribles") and goes out of its way to say that doesn't worry the airline at all.

ANA flies line 7, 8, and 9, with 222 people, NRT-YVR @4,674 miles.

You think flying 262 people CDG-DZA @4,990 mi would be a problem for line 15? I guess passenger count isn't really enough to go on.

It would probably work fine with a full passenger load, but remember just how much baggage and cargo you get outbound on a route like CDG-DZA...

I do think LN 15 would be challenged on RUN-CDG with a full passenger load. LN 22 should handle that without any issue even in the dense 262 seat configuration.

Does AF still fly dedicated cargo routes multiple times to RUN? I believe one route stops at Cairo and the other at Djibouti. so probably no need for much freight out of RUN.
